Its so cool (for me I'm 33) to meet guys like this because none of my peers know or care about stuff like this until I invite them over to share what "Hi-Fi" is. I'm a hardware store manager and I met a dude just like David and its awesome to cut up about gear, records, stories and so on. Hes always excited to see me and loan me gear or records and in turn I do the same with the younger guys at work. Since most of this community is in the "older age" bracket I hope we are all doing our part in sharing this hoddy with us younger people whenever we can you never know what you may say that will stick with or change someone for the rest of their lives.
Thanks for all your work Mr. Guttenberg we all appreciate you!

One question I have always wondered about was why audiophiles back in the early 70's were young people in their early to mid twenties and now, it seems like audiophiles, in large degree, are the same people, 40 years later. David, put out a very viable reason why. Steve, I could easily listen to David for an hour. Very interesting guy! Great interview!!

I think I'm the only audiophile living in Brooklyn that is not a member of the Audiophile Society, although I have met some people who are, and I've turned down a couple of invites. It seems Dave and I have some commonality in turntables since I too own a VPI Revenger Reference with the rim drive. We both also have an affection for past VPI turntables and tubes. However, I'd rather listen to RCA's than Mercury's and Decca's over EMI's any day. Dave shares the qualities of many audiophiles that collect labels, get together and talk about pressings, recording venues, engineers and the like. I really enjoy talking about music, musicians, bands, and orchestras. A lot of audiophiles have a limited number of records. I own close to 8000 over multiple genres. I've always found it difficult to relate to many typical audiophiles, hence my reticence in joining the Society. Nevertheless, I'm, glad to finally meet Dave third hand as it were, and it's good to see Dave is still active in the Society and that the Society is still thriving. I think perhaps the next invite I get I'll accept.

Seems to me that reviewers are afraid of being cut off from a manufacturer (if they give a negative review), so if they don't like an item they just don't publish/post a review of it. The result is that the reviewer apoears to like everything. A better way of viewing it is that reviewers only publish/post reviews of items they like.

Reference Recordings Pantatone, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, ECM, Blue Note and a couple of others. I feel the same way about written reviews. My system cost very close to $40,000US but if I see reviews of speakers costing $100,000, or preamps costing $15,000, I just walk on by.

Not sure why really. Just know that when something sounds good I keep reaching for the volume control!! My spl meter has peaked well over 100db. Mind you my average is closer to 95db. My tube amp has only 35 watts per side so I need efficient speakers to attain such levels. And his 81db speakers just won’t do it. Though I bet they sound great!!

    • @helgar791
      @helgar791 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@Larry Niles Of course. I've just never found it necessary to listen at high DB's in a home environment. Not for long periods. If you read Carl Smith he said, "Just know that when something sounds good I keep reaching for the volume control!!" I can respect his response. It's his house and ears. For me, when something sounds good, I just sit back and listen. Occasionally I reach for a beverage. @carmenandthedevil2804 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@skystudios2474 No. Generally its the midrange that creates the Bright as F..k sound. High frequencies tend to create more space and detail in the upper midrange, upper frequency harmonics and in some cases, inner detail, emotion etc. A typical example of "BRIGHT" is a mobile disco for functions where the Midrange is over emphasized and the extremes (Lower bass and high treble) are missing. This is generally designed because of multi body absorption.

Ah yes, I remember reading about speakers like these many years ago. They are a line source as opposed to a point source like normal loudspeakers. If I recall correctly, even though they are inefficient, the sound pressure level doesn't decrease as much with distance, so they should sound louder at the same distance in the listening room.

I've always been a believer in what a product can realistically deliver for the price point. You should always look for items that get 3* at $1000 that then get discounted to $600. It will usually then be the best at the lower price point. Occasionally you'll get an outlier - Pioneer A400X springs to mind, that over-delivered for the initial price at the time. You then start to see the "signature" versions arrive and the price creeps up.

@@chrisvinicombe9947 Which is why many reviewers only publicize the products they enjoyed. Most reviewers return faulty, non functioning or poorly designed products without a review. Also always look at longtime reviewers and the established manufacturers they have never reviewed. That will tell you another interesting story.

@@helgar791 yeah I remember Sean at zero fedility saying that , I think Steve also said something similar. I've been meaning to ask Sean how often he gets faulty products for review. I've brought a couple of new amplifiers recently and they both had to go back so I'm interested how often this affects reviewers.

I discovered the Audiophile label many years ago. Initially I thought maybe the name was a bit pretentious, maybe even close to a scam. But no, it IS a great label. I only have a couple of albums from them, but now when I go hunting for LPs I always look for them. And I like David’s method of collecting!

Earl Dunbar Yeah, by label is a valid and cool way to start.. From Decca to Blue Note, from Stax to 4AD, from CTI to ECM.. etc, etc..

Steve I enjoyed listening to David. It appears that your fans wanted a little more of David as well. I work in in TV and I would say 15-20 minute discussion is appropriate. A little longer if it's a conversation and gear demo. Maybe have David return for a follow up conversation.

I also believe the he is the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies

What an inspiring gentleman! Music is front and center. Then it comes the equipment. Steve should allow their guests to express their personalities a little more. He can get way too dry sometimes.

    • @Beyondabsence

@Sheniquahhh Smith Yes. I trust his reviews but his personality is dry. All my life I've been surrounded by musicians, since I'm a pianist. Music, music music. Recently I've been fascinated by HiFi, budget side. What I've been noticing is that the audio equipment seems for them to be the master whose slave is the music. I think of it as the other way around.

cool. I am not sure why he says used is "sadly used". Used makes a lot of sense with decent audio gear, that lasts a long time.
