    The Steinhart’s I’ve bought have been solid watches and a great value. Super popular and a huge following so no problem flipping them if you change your mind in the future. Looking at the Tudor pro right now so this video is helpful. Might look into Steinhart’s homage of the Rolex 1655 instead.

    I own the 42mm version... fantastic watch. It has no cyclops but the crystal is a bit curved, unlike this one which I think is dead flat. Case side profile is a bit different too. It's a better Rolex than Rolex, and I say that as a Rolex owner.

    Steinharts are awesome!! I had 5 different ones before selling them all to buy my Tudor BB58. All the ones I had were the Ocean 39. Marine Blue Snowflake, Explorer Dial, Vintage Red, and the Tropic Plexi. Build quality is amazing, and accuracy were amazing. The Vintage Red and Explorer Dial were within 1-2 spd.

      I've had a ovm39 myself. Really enjoyed that watch but sold it when I bought a planet Ocean. It just looked too aesthetically similar. Love the blackbay 58 btw. Such a good looking classy looking watch. Pictures just don't do it justice, you need to see in front of your eyes. I was so close to picking one up before I bought the planet Ocean. I might still do in the future but circled a tag Heuer Monaco, doxa sub, and Tudor royal as my next 3 purchases.

      Thats awesome! Yeah this definitely wont be my last steinhart I've got my eye on the gnomon ocean vintage military 39 although I am slightly worried about the color of the fauxtina. the customer photos make it seem more creamy than yellow which is promising. The marine blue snowflake is really cool as well

  • @anthonystevens8683

    Another top video TWI, for anyone considering a BB Pro this should certainly be on the 'watch' list. OK it's not as some may say a 'true GMT' where the travel hour hand (travel time) moves one hour to or from the GMT hand (local time) but is as you say very useful for a quick date change (remember a true GMT will go forwards and backwards on date adjustment) . For anyone looking for a cheaper and let's be honest a slimmer alternative to the Tudor BB Pro this really is a no brainer. Loaded with an ETA or Sellita well proven easy to get serviced locally movements should not put anyone off. They may not be COSC certified but should be possible to regulate to that standard but may void manufacture warranty. I do find the GMT hand a tad loud though on this example. Generally my experience from watches purchased with both ETA and Sellita movements have not been too far off COSC out of the box. Would I go for the BB Pro over this model? if you like it, can afford it and justify it then I would say yes. I did but that takes nothing away from the watch under review. I love this Steinhart Ocean 39.

    • @xpusostomos
      @xpusostomos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People forget that the original Rolex Explorer II wasn't a GMT at all. The orange hand is merely a 24 hour indicator. So the Steinhart is already a step above the original.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Anthony! Yeah its a great alternative to the BB Pro considering the price and quality but for me I actually think it'll be able to coexist with the BB Pro! Thats mainly down to how unique the dial of the 1655 was and that while the BB Pro looks great, it just doesnt have that bizarre and slightly illegible/awesome dial of the 1655 and the steinhart!
      We'll have to see what comes of the steinhart once the BB Pro comes in but either way I'm glad they both exist!
      xpusostomos, yeah having a GMT function is far more useful than having just a 24 hr indication so I'm all for moving away from the original lol!

    • @xpusostomos
      @xpusostomos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole "true GMT" I find a bit of a bogus narrative, since there are half hour time zones, so you have to set the time the usually way anyway in that case. The real true GMT is the luminox GMT because the GMT hand is infinitely adjustable.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree I see them as simply two types of gmts for different functions. The ETA/Sellita GMT is actually far more useful for me!

    Thanks for getting and reviewing this watch. I had heard of the Olko version of this watch before, but hadn't realize it had white lume. I definitely do prefer that look in this case. Unfortunately now, and the other time I went to the Olko site to see this watch they've been sold out. I don't know how long they go between resupplies, but I hope they send out notifications as I've signed up for their mailing list. I think if the BB Pro had gone with an orange hand, I'd just get that instead. I may end up with the full size BB GMT instead, because I still want to track a 3rd time zone sometimes (for work). They didn't though, so I think this is a reasonable substitute. I am with you on the "homage" being okay on a watch not produced for decades, and ridiculously priced. That's not to say it is not worth it for some, but I don't want to spend as much as a car on a watch I'll have to baby due to it being vintage. Most people aren't going to know this watch when they see it, and I'd be open with who makes it. I definitely wouldn't feel like I am trying to fool anybody, which is my issue with many other homage watches. From the perspective of not owning it, my only complaint about this model is the cyclops could magnify a bit better. My Seiko has a pretty good cyclops, as does Rolex. Some others I've seen don't do a great job in my opinion. Still, I think I'd rather have this than the regular version of this Steinhart without it.

    Minor point: I seriously doubt those still come with an ETA movement. I started buying Steinharts back in 2020 and all the ones I bought that were advertised as "either ETA or Sellita" came with a Sellita movement. Only exception being the Paul Newman homage, but that one only ever came with an ETA 2824 (top grade) + DD2020 chrono module. Meaning they never put a Sellita movement in this model.
    According to my local watch-maker, it shouldn't really matter if you get an ETA or a Sellita. There are minor differences, but basically, the SW200 is a clone of the 2824 while the SW300 that's probably in your watch is a clone of the ETA 2892. I had one in my Pussy Galore homage and it kept very good time and was much nicer to interact with than the SW200s/ETA 2824s.
    Another side-note: All Steinhart O1s come with elaboré grade movements. Both ETA and Sellita offer four grades (standard, elaboré, top, chronometer). IIRC, elaboré doesn't offer any hardware changes (top and chrono do), but those movements are regulated in three positions and generally offer better regulation/time-keeping out of the box. Case in point: All my Steinharts run/ran either within COSC or close to it. My Christopher Ward C63 with its (probably) standard SW200 ran at +15s/d out of the box and needed a bit of help from my watchmaker.. :) Never had to have any of my Steinharts re-regulated.

      steinheart make two homages of long since discontinued Rolex models, the explorer 2 and sword hand sub. Most casuals wouldn't even know they where Rolex homages so it's not like you are trying to pretend it's a sub etc. I think they are class, but agree I wouldn't wear a homage to a hulk or pepsi you would look like a fool if someone asked if it was a Rolex and you had to say no 🤣

    I have the same watch, I just wish it didn't have the Cyclops, and like all Steinhart watches the case is a little flat, and the clasp isn't the best. So I loved pretty much everything about the Explorer II and while the 42mm size was bigger than I wanted I still loved it. But as time passed the 21mm lug width bothered me and then the 42mm size ended up looking bigger than what I wanted. Eventually I wasn't wearing it very much and I couldn't justify keeping that much money tied away in a watch I wasn't wearing. If it was 40mm I think it would still be on my wrist!

    Great review and you raise some really interesting and thought provoking points.
    I’m totally with you that the term “homage” is misused among watch enthusiasts and for context, I personally don’t have anything against homage watches (I’ve owned 3 over the years) but I do generally prefer original designs.
    It’s out of my budget for the moment but assuming I did have the funds then for me the Black Bay Pro (and as an aside, the MoonSwatch too I suppose come to think of it) strays a bit beyond the point of homaging another design for me to really want one. I don’t hate the BB Pro or anything, I think it’s a really well done design, it’s just not for me. It’s an uncanny valley type of deal, the BB Pro is so close to 1655 but doesn’t quite go all the way.
    The Steinhart is a bit more upfront (or “shameless” depending on your point of view 😂) about what it’s trying to do design wise so does a better job of scratching that 1655 itch (I think it’s all about that handset and dial for me which the Steinhart nails) but I agree those lugs would drive me crazy.
    So I guess neither watch is really quite “right” but I think it’s easier for me to accept a few foibles at the price that the Steinhart sits at than It would be for the Tudor given my budget so for me I’d be going with the Steinhart if I was looking to scratch a 1655 type itch.

    It’s a very good point. I have the 42mm and the 39mm version of this Steinhart. I love the 39mm. It is wearable and who in their right mind would walk around with an Explorer II on their wrist. And to be honest with myself… I have no intention of ever wearing any of my Rolex watches again. It’s a crap, overrated, over priced brand for Russian gangsters, stupid bankers, Chinese crooks and drug dealers.
    That said. I have five Tudors: the BB Steel, GMT, 58, BB Chrono, and the black ceramic. So… I want/need the pro. Can’t help myself.

      @@thewatchidiot Most of the price difference goes to the retailer, Consumer TAX (21% in Spain), Marketing (i.e. attending big trade shows, paying Beckham, Lady Gaga, ...) etc.
      The jumping hour is just how the wheels are set, which implies no manufacturing cost at all, ...
      Tudor is now producing their own movements, in large numbers, machine-made, so maybe they even reduced the cost ;-).

Think this brands offer two different models out different times and for the price Tudor ask for the new model its a really fair deal. A real old 70/80's Rolex of Steinharts homage in worn unknown condition costs around 20-30td bucks. Thats out my range, so dont have a bad feeling wearing my Steinis.
