Problems associated with tongue tie use include horses showing signs of pain, anxiety and distress, difficulty swallowing, cuts and lacerations to the tongue, bruising and swelling. The restriction of blood flow by the tongue tie use can cause the tongue to turn blue and can result in permanent tissue damage. N.B. This is an UNREGULATED practice. The trainers decide how tightly to tie the tongue and how long it remains tied. Ties are generally applied before leaving the stable and are reportedly left on for up to twenty minutes during racing and thirty minutes during training. There is NO veterinarian input either BEFORE or AFTER use. The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses exists to protect and defend the lives and wellbeing of horses used by the racing industry. When considering the above information, one thing is made abundantly clear - the use of tongue ties (like horse racing overall) is in service to the human, not the horse. Even if tongue ties were proven to improve safety and respiratory function, it would only be in cases where their bodies are pushed beyond natural limits for the benefit of the industry. CPR believes that horses should not be forcefully dominated to the point that their tongues must be banded and strapped down inside their mouths, causing them stress, pain and injuries, simply for the entertainment and profit of humans.
I never knew people did this on race horses. The thing that upsets me the most is that these animals have no say about what we choose to do to them. It's like being on an operating table and watching the dr do things you would never allow but you have no way of saying no because you can't talk.
if you fit your cavison and bridal properly you don't need to put a tongue tie on. a cavison is supposed to keep the horse from getting it's mouth open and if it can't open it's mouth it can't bite it's tongue off. there are obviously exceptions to the rule but I have stopped using them on alot of horses. it's kinda outdated. if a horse does flip it's pallet while racing without a tongue tie on it is usually able to flip it's pallet back on it's own not to mention some horses are just totally pissed off with it's tongue tied and a stressed and irratated horse is not happy and not going to give you it's full effort. dually noted if it is preoccupied with trying to get the tongue tie off it's not focused on competition. VERY much over used equipment that really doesn't do a whole lot. I have never seen a horse personally bite off it's tongue racing. key is to properly size the cavison.
Thanks, I drive a donkey team and one of my boys always puts his tongue over the bit. When he wants a treat, he puts his tongue back under fast.(No the bridle is not too loose)I was not sure if it matters to have the bit in first or tie first
Ok, I know that the tongue tie is a safety precaution, but why do you have so much stuff in that horse’s mouth? I don’t have anything in my horses mouth. I don’t even have a hackamore or a halter on him most of the time!
This is NOT abusive. It's a safety precaution to keep the horse from choking down during a race. And the horses don't seem to mind it at all. If they're comfortable with the placement of a bit in their mouths, the addition of a tongue tie isn't that big a deal.
Ok I get it.. whatever, but I've never heard of a horse running in the wild so fast & hard that it has bitten up its own toung doing so. Tie your toung up for a day, go run a marathon and see how safe you feel.
samanthahayden78 ...uhm? did you even read what @Simon1111022 said, he clearly stated that horse have bits and are used to it, and because some aren’t the brightest they get their tongue stuck on the bit in which can cause a rip in their tongue or rub and cause them pain, this is why some horses need tongue ties when they are focusing on more important things like racing or carriage pulling, they often get confused in their mouths and might get their tongue stuck in the bit. if you knew anything about this you wouldn’t make a retarded remark like that lol, that’s just plain stupid thinking you could compare a human running a marathon to a horse. the damn tongue tie is to prevent them from hurting themselves. but hey, you learn something new everyday.
It actually is. Also if you knew about horses you would know they can’t choke because they can’t breath through their mouth. Also they do mind it they just can’t talk. It can cut their tongue off

Thanks for the great demo. I have a barrel horse that has DDSP and need to try this out and see if it helps him.

So basically you want to abuse your horse. WOW. I never knew somebody could be so heartless

You have so much crap in the horse's mouth I'm amazed he can tolerate it.

@@nikkig5636if you knew anything you would know that this is abuse
@annaelizabeth23 Another PETA member tryhard. If tying my standardbred's tongue is abusive, flossing my teeth must be a federal crime.
This is abuse
