    Bought an 81 in 81 right off the showroom floor, was a dream of mine growing up. White with a red interior, T-tops and factory rally wheels. Absolutely stunning! And absolutely the biggest POS I’ve ever owned. For about 6 weeks I was taking it back to the dealer about once a week for something, until one day I started it up and the was an exhaust leak under the hood. Drove it to the dealer again and when the service rep asked me to release the hood from inside the car to see the problem, the entire hood release handle along with the entire cable(maybe 6 feet) pulled right out. The dealer thought it was best if I return it for a full refund, I did. Can’t really blame GM because all the cars from about 74-late 80’s were pretty poorly made. I should know, I’ve had many.

    I have an 80 with white and dark blue interior similar to yours, the interior is leather though instead of cloth. They're worth the work and awesome vintage cars. Good luck with the build, I'm currently getting mine restored

      Awesome. This one I would call a “survivor.” Everything is there and mostly original. Happy that the seats are in good condition and those are so comfortable compared with the ones in my ‘76. I hope you car’s restoration is done soon. The anticipation must be tough. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

    Awesome can’t wait to watch the transformation! I consider cars in this condition a fun car to piddle with, a car you can go out every evening and do a couple hrs worth of work after dinner and get something accomplished, nothing like a full restoration where you can put in hour after hour and hardly notice anything has been done!
    If that paint is original and being lacquer it should buff up nice and lacquer is easy to do spot painting, I would bet you can make it look good without a total repaint especially being a non metallic and white!
    Again looking forward to the upcoming videos! Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks, Dan. I agree with getting a few items taken care of at a time.
      Today, I gave it a much-needed bath to get the exterior detailing started. It was time well spent.
      I am calling this one a “survivor” because it’s mostly all there and original, just used for forty-plus years. Used-not abused-being key.
      And I will definitely try to save the paint. White is very forgiving and I think when it’s done it will look great.
      A complete interior detailing is also happening soon and I will have video. So stay tuned!
      Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

    I purchased a triple black 81 that had been converted to a convertible. The job was nicely done and it drew lots of comments. It was a dog performance wise though. The engine went south and I rebuilt it into a 355 and used aftermarket parts. She was a lot snappier after that. I sold it at Bloomington Gold Mecum the last year they actually had the show in Bloomington itself.

    7:07 - One of the most common missed places to check on C3 Corvettes with steel floor pans (post 76). Also, I always check inside the two holes designed for the side pipes for rust. Interesting that this was one of the last St. Louis cars before they all went to Kentucky.

      St Louis could two-tone if they needed to, they painted 80 two-tone test cars in 80 to test for 81 production but in 81, St Louis built only solid color cars.

    @donhenderson5100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First, congratulations on the 81. I'm sure you will have fun with it.
    Does the 81 have slightly thinner roof panels?
    And does it have the non cast iron exhaust manifolds?
    Supposed, the weight reduction was still happening. This was good as the HP wasn't huge. But reducing weight is free HP.
    Anxious to see where you start with this new project.

    • @76vette
      @76vette  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! 😊👍🏻
      Based on info the prev. owner gave me, ‘81 Vettes had thinner door glass and the new stainless-steel, free-flowing exhaust manifolds which were 14 lbs less than cast-iron manifolds.
      1981 Corvettes also had an electric fan so they could use a smaller main fan.
      The new Computer Command Control system regulated fuel metering.
      It also has a six-way power seat, among many other features.
      My car was built in St. Louis based on the VIN which, interestingly enough, is also stamped on the windshield. So it’s safe to assume my windshield is original.
      Not sure why my air cleaner has a black lid. I read that all ‘81s were supposed to have chrome air filter covers.
      My car’s engine code is ZDA (L81, 190 hp, 8.2:1, manual, 4BBL).
      Paint code is 10 (Lacquer).
      Base price (1981) was $15,248 and total production was 40,606 cars. Mine was built in 1980.
      For a 190 hp motor, torque was pretty respectable at 280 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm.
      The first thing I did was give it a good bath. The car is dirty, inside and out, so cleaning is the first order of business. From there I’ll detail it, do basic maintenance, replace the tires, give it a good tune-up, etc., etc. 😊👍🏻

    What is the bird cage and why should we inspect it? 🤔

    • @76vette
      @76vette  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The C3 Corvette birdcage is a metal frame around the car’s cabin. Body panels are glued to it and the structure also houses four of the eight total body mounts.
      If not cared for properly, it can rust. In those cases a purchase should be avoided as repairing one can be extremely expensive and time-consuming.

    The engine does need the twin snorkel cold air into the carburetor its engine bay is completely sealed for air to only travel thru the radiator an open air cleaner works good for stop lights but high speed draws in hot engine bay air making it less powerful.
