Tutorials showing how to use the blend tool to create an extrusion effect are pretty much everywhere, so we thought we'd do something different and show some other methods of creating that effect.

Thank you for all of the variations on the extrude effect! When I do the 3D effect, it ALWAYS looks jagged, doesn't render correctly and/or the Expand Appearance function leaves me with something I can't use. Do you have any tips on how to turn it into a usable vector graphic? Are there settings that I'm missing?

Hi man, this is fantastic thanks!
The third example seems preferable to the other two, so why then do so many people opt for the first option? What are the disadvantages of the extrude 3d function? Seems like everyone should use that?

Thanks, glad it was helpful to you.
Regarding the 3D extrude option: I think the main disadvantage is that it can be a bit glitchy at times. And maybe it looks intimidating to someone who hasn’t used it before? Might be why it doesn’t get as much use.
It’s a bit of a ‘horses for courses’ situation. You have greater color control using the blend tool, and it’s good for creating some interesting effects as well (eg multi-point blends, rotations, or blending between different objects). The appearance panel ‘transform’ method allows for stacking a lot of different modifiers to a single object, so that method plays very well with multiple effects. And yes, the 3D extrude provides a really straightforward way of achieving an extruded visual, quickly.
I think (but I’d have to check to be sure) that the 3D extrude also doesn’t bog down output of a flattened PDF/postscript file for printing as much as the other methods can, either. Not totally sure about that though.

why when I do the 3d extrusion the lateral faces are grayed out?
By the way, great tutorial! Congratulations

Sometimes it can be a bit glitchy. Adjusting settings (eg just moving the object or changing extrusion depth) can often 'jar' it back into behaving. Sometimes it also gets confused if there are a lot of overlapping paths in the font.
