Steve Reeves was the ultimate movie Hercules. The film had some silly and outdated elements, including some questionable bowmanship, but it remains absolutely iconic. I first saw it when I was 10 years old, and it inspired me to rush to the City College bookshop near my home, where I bought Bulfinch's Mythology-a book that became a fundamental influence in my life. Thanks.

Hercules, understanding what his strength was due to, lifted him into the air with his strong arms and strangled him without difficulty. After this feat, Hercules, tired, fell asleep. Then the Pygmies, a people of dwarfs, chained him and nailed him to the ground. When Hercules woke up, he jumped up and, grabbing them in his fist, wrapped them all in the skin of the Nemean lion that he was wearing. Does this remind you of Gulliver's Travels?
If you've seen BLAZING SADDLES, there's a midway scene of Sheriff Bart asking the town for help. They snootily refuse. Then he says, "You'd do it for RANDOLF SCOTT !" and trumpets blare and heaven's pharharmonic joins in - and everyone agrees. (OK, well, sans the music bit. ha ha) These HERCULES films should be spoken with the same Sheriff Bart tone when mentioning Steve Reeves. What a great opening scene. (It's not true that Steve's dialog was cut, "Women drivers - !! I swear - !!")
