i'm not sure if it's necessarily because he 'doesn't want to be there', but taemin doesn't really tend to serve facial expressions in the dance practices lol. it's the actual performances where he really comes alive. i think he's the kind of performer that is best when he and an audience are feeding off of each other's energy and you just don't get that from a dance practice.
Yes, he has always had that type of professional effortless expression. He’s one of the few artists that doesn’t need to have or show facial expression plus allot of the concepts TAEMIN has used for over a decade now, majority of them were dark with deep meaning throughout his personal solo music.
Totally agree here. His lives are always like a thunderstorm hitting - which is kind of true of SHINee, in general, too. He's so good using his audience's energy. I do hope to see him live someday. *sigh*

I agree!! I felt it was disrespectful to Taemin to say "he doesn't want to be there". Taemin gives 1000% in any and all things that he does.
I remember that Taemin wasn't gonna record a dance practice and then literally dance minute decided to, so they filmed this really late at night and did a couple of takes. He was tired, and commented that it wasn't the "best" dance practice but that he still wanted to release it for us. sooooo i also kinda get that feeling of him being "over it", and tired (he was also doing superm stuff!)

Believe it or not, what you just witnessed in Taemin's dance practice video isn't even Taemin at full power. If you really want to see what makes Taemin such a brilliant performer, check out some of his live performances. Taemin live is on a whole other level. That is where he truly shines. You will be even more impressed once you see him perform these songs and dances live.
And what's even more impressive about his live performances is the fact that he is singing live the whole time and he sounds flawless all while performing this intensely. His vocals are never compromised no matter how complex or difficult his choreography is.
Taemin doesn't have to try to grab your attention, he just exudes commend of the stage. :D That is what makes him one of the top performers and why he is so popular. It's all just who he is.
He has always been known for saving his energy for where it counts the most -- for live performances and for filming MVs -- dance practices for him are literally dance practices, so he is just allowing himself to feel the dance and get in the groove. He is less worried about being spot on exact, and more about showing everyone the feel of the choreography and the story behind the dance.
Taemin doesn't need to expend every ounce of his energy in the dance practice video, to show us how brillant of a dancer he is. With even 50% effort, Taemin is more magnificent than a lot of dancers when they dance full out. No one can pull off a Taemin dance exactly the way Taemin does it -- it's never as sharp or precise as he does it -- no matter how talented of a dancer you are.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite.That's what makes him even more lovable.
When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he become the most powerful and magnificent performer that command the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL. If you see him in his everyday life, it's almost hard to believe he can be this intense when performing. It's literally like he flips a switch. :D
The more you see from Taemin, and SM artists in general, you might even start to recognize Taemin's backup dancers. Because there are only a select few people that can match his dance style and precision. So, when SM and Taemin find dancers that are exceptional, they hold on to them for as long as they can and they use them in almost everything. The dancers you see in Taemin's MVs are usually most of the same dancers he uses for his concerts and live performances. They are Taemin's dancers. And they are often also SM dancers, which means they are used as backup dancers in a lot of SM's other groups projects.

I really liked his reaction to the dance practice. Now I can see his focus is mostly on form and the theatricals of the performer (I was sceptical of him on the NCT reactions). I finally hear someone recognizing Taemin is an intelligent seasoned performer that doesn't overexert himself trying to hit hard every section of the choreo. Sometimes dancers forget musical performers have to sing simultaneously to dancing and you have to hold back a little in certain moments, so you can go hard on the vocals.

It's interesting that he felt Taemin looked "over it" in his dance performance because to me he's just monitoring himself in the mirror very consciously, as well as exuding the overall atmosphere and attitude that was suitable for the song. It could be that the vibe the reactor picked up on was the vibe that Taemin was trying to express. Taemin always talked about taking on personas for each of his songs and I can see that clearly in all of his performances, whether they're in an MV or a dance practice.

Second regarding Taemin's facial expressions, idk if watching a dance practice will give you an accurate image. I'm not bothered by his first impression because it's true Taemin is pretty "at work" when it comes to his dance practices. It's really about practicing and going through the routine for him. It's different when he is on stage. And while yes his intensity is a trademark of him because let's be honest most of Taemin's songs are intense so it just fits but he is capable to adjust to any kind of song which you perfectly see in Shinee stages or his concert performances of his songs 'Mars' or 'What's this feeling' or 'Into the rhythm' for example. But that's just my two cents.

Teamin is incredibly Talented singer Dancer Vocalist and Preformer since the age of fourteen when he debut with Shinee in 2008. Teamin has been in the K-pop music industry for such a long time
"Idea" is part of Taemin's 3rd full length Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. "Idea" is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
Taemin pronounces Idea the way you hear him saying it because he is pronouncing it like the Greek word idéa, and not like the English pronunciation. The song is based on the Greek philosopher Plato’s theory of Ideas. Plato believed that an "Idea" is an ultimate reality. Every form has an idea, an image, or standard set for it and Plato believed that these ideas were eternal. For example, when talking about a human, everyone has an image, an ideal type of human according to Plato and once defined that description or thought is constant and never changing.
In the song Teamin is disagreeing with Plato's theory and he is saying that the world is not ruled by one ultimate definition of something or that there isn't only one voice. Taemin is saying he has many voices and thoughts influencing him. If he were to conform to only one way of doing something -- i.e., if he listened to everyone who told him there was only one way to be a Kpop Idol and he needed to do everything the traditional cookiecutter way -- then that would be like killing his spirit and everything that makes him who he is. Hence the lines in the song that say "Killing me softly."
Fun fact: The female voice you hear saying "Killing me softly" is BoA. She is a solo artist also under SM Entertainment, and she is Taemin's highly respected senior who debuted with SM in 2000 at the age of 13 and, now after more than 21 years, she is known as one of the senior-most members of the industry. BoA is legend. To see what kind of influence BoA has had on the industry and why it is so fitting that she was included on this song, check out her recent "202020" documentary which was created as part of her 20th anniversary celebrations.
Some have said, and I have to agree, that "Idea" is a metaphor for the way Taemin sees his career. He loves what he does, almost to the point of obsession -- like "my messiah" he is drawn to it and can't help worship it -- he practically needs to dance and perform to survive. But, at the same time, it pretty much controls his life and living as an Idol means everything he does is done in the public eye and he will never be able to live a normal life -- his "dangerous dream" that is engulfing him and "swallowing him" up. The stress and constant demand for perfection he feels may be slowly "Killing me softly," etc.
I particularly like the verse in "Idea" that says, "The blue light, When you and I face each other, Stained in it, All one's feelings, It's an infinite range, In my world, Most dazzling,The absolute value of you, My my IDEA." These lines seem to be talking about Taemin's fans. SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue, so the blue light you see in the MV and the blue light he talks about in the lyrics of "Idea," makes me think he is referring to the impact and influence the fans have had on everything he has done in his career. And although he loves and appreciates us, it has not come without a few sacrifices and negative aspects as well. The mutual love and respect between Taemin and the fans also has added a lot of extra pressure on him because he always wants to give people his absolute best and he is constantly trying to live up to an impossible standard of self-imposed flawlessness.
So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker than the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person/criminal (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So, in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself as he pushes himself in his pursuit of perfection) he still can't help but love the criminal (i.e. his career) and allow them/it to continue to cause him to suffer, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need to be perfect, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Idea," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 13 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after more than a decade Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 28) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.

In hindsight though, considering how his mental health has been declining during his military service and still grieving over the loss of Jonghyun, I think it's becoming quite clear that Taemin hit his peak YEARSSS ago and Jake brings up a valid point that he needs to be constantly challenged or else this is just a simple "clock-in, clock-out" situation. What else can Taemin do now going forward? Esp since his art and style isn't mainstream like Jake said. And also, just to add to the comments that have already spoken about this lol but, I'm sure Taemin was EXHAUSTED because this was part of his trilogy project right AFTER SUPER M promo so this all happened within 3-5 months of back to back content THEN SHINEE back TO BACK THEN THE FINAL mini album so he was being pushed to the EXTREME to fit all this in 2020 and early 2021 right before his enlistment. In addition to his dance practices that usually showcase how he doesn't exude that much energy he still had to push through all that exhaustion for the stage. Absolutely incredible!
I so appreciate your comments. I felt they were very honest and based on performance and not bias. I had only seen a few videos of him before this and I didn't get why people were so impressed. You hit the nail on the head. The videos that I had seen didn't really show his skills. And like you said, he looked over it. I saw clips in this video that show his dance skills better. He is a great dancer. Please recommend more of his videos.

His comments are very similar to what Ian Eastwood said about Taemin. He's just effortless when he moves. I also noticed this when SHINee did Sherlock in 2x speed. His hyungs were struggling but you can't see that struggle with Taemin. He was very economical with his movements during that time.

I agree with others comments, also from another take realized Taemin has not really been able to have a significant ‘break’ / time off from his career aside from his military serving been doing his incredible work nonstop. Thats what came to my mind when the guest shared their thought on ‘doesnt want to be there’ like when you do that same realm and things you / your body gets limited breaks to actually breakup your routines (ie travel, really get Out of your zone).
Taemin got ‘away’ to Switzerland for the Shinee vacation years and years ago but the guest really put me to think in Taemins shoes with their thought. Life balance, when so much of your adulthood has.. mainly been the routines of your career. I remember in an interview on radio? Taemin had answered something like - doing what he wants to do further into his career. Have to wonder if he craves different experiences having been so dedicated to his work / art most of his life. Well abt those heavy shoes. I think it's similar to how those basketball players practice their throws by using specially designed heavy ball so that later in the real games they can throw faster and lighter or like how those martial artists do running with heavy iron plates on their shins. Key once said how they all felt like dying after spending hours of practices in like 5 kg boots. This is how they can dance so light and effortless in the footwork even during 3 hrs live concerts, their feet are so used to work in much heavier set up.
Now this is what I think with the facial expression. Dance practices like this usually are up and shot during preparation/promotion time. Knowing idols, this must be done in tight schedules, for fans and as part of their promotion materials so for me it's understandable if they look fatigue or just not very invested emotionally. We all know how dance practices vids are most of the times not the "real" dance practices. They probably even just finished with music show recordings but still need to film this so yeah.

A lot of the songs he's done recently have had darker meanings and this is one of them, so it makes sense that he doesn't look particularly happy while performing this one.

He needs to see taemin perform!!! Because in his dance practices taemin doesn't really show his stage presence. His dance practices are meant to show the choreo fully and in detail but it's on stage kn front of people that taemin really gives all of himself. And at that point he is mesmerizing.
One thing that i love about him is how he doesn't need extra facial expressions to have charisma. He has another type of presence, an intensity that is so strong on stage that it doesn't really need strong facials. I guess it's a different type of approach. I kinda find hilarious how both kai and taemin are in my top five best dancers in kpop and they are best friends and have two completely opposite ways of performing. Kai is the king of facial expressions (i sometimes don't like artists who put too much effort in their facials but with kai is different because he doesn't have to put an effort, it comes naturally to him and it feels not forced but authentic) while taemin has this other kind of presence. They are the examples of excellence in two different ways of dancing and expressing dance

Tae been wesring thise shoes since 2013 Dream girl ers. I feel like every mv or at least 2 stage those are thr soes on his feet, both solo or shinee stages. Maybe they melted into his feet and it is not possible to take thrm off? Ot he gets thrrm made just for him, lighter and more comfortable? Idk.
What you said about SM is 100% correct. Best production and talent and you can hear the Black producers behind it. Off subject but.... if he ever wants to cut that hair off, tell him put it in a plastic baggy and mail it over here lol
14:15 yeas you are totally wrong ! LOL, Taemin rarely shows an expression when dancing even looks effortless, but he's great even without showing a prominent expression we can still feel the emotions he gives through his movements and it's not easy to do

I distinctly remember the dance practice to SHINee's Replay and Love Like Oxygen being played obsessively on my computer when it first came out, thinking, " that maknae can dance his a$$ off" He was something even then, dancing effortlessly at what, 15???? He's something special.

I appreciate your friends opinion on dance but he really doesn't know anything about Taemin and he completely misjudged him...but you know Taemin, his facial expression is the same in all his dance practices regardless of the intensity ....but we all know that on stage he is....honestly one of the most captivating artists there is...perhaps he is just somewhat intense for your friend.
He did say “I could be wrong”, he’s just saying what’s on his mind.

Maybe what he said abt Taemin seeming over the performance is why I prefer a fan cover of it over the actual thing. I could never put my finger on it but I think it's bc the guy doing the cover was clearly feeling the song and himself and that made the dance hit harder. Not that I don't like the original bc Taemin always does well.
