Nick.. I think you would LOVE Madman Across the Water, title track. It was released before Yellow Brick Road. I am a super fan of Elton and was fortunate enough to have seen him around 13 or 14 times, the first time being in 1973 for the Yellow Brick Road tour. The Elton from back in the day is head and shoulders above his later stuff, IMO. Hope you enjoy the music. His long time partner (musical) Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics that I fell in love with, while Elton composes the music. Again, the musical composition on Madman Across the Water is hauntingly beautiful and powerful. Have fun! PS: I LOVE the fact that you get emotional.. that is what music is supposed to do.. again.. if you have not listened to Madman, please do.. I promise you won't be able to get through it with dry eyes! Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters is another good one.. so is We all Fall in Love Sometimes/Curtains from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (from the end of the world to your town), although Captain Fantastic should be listened to from start to finish as it tells Elton and Bernie's story.

@@johnandrews3151 I am an old school Elton fan that knows almost every hit and most songs he has done. His heRt and soul got lost along the way by the late ‘70’s. His early music had his great vocal range with Paul Buckmaster’s great influence with the orchestration. Bernie’s songwriting along with Reggie’s musical ingenuity are unsurpassed in that style of music. He lost his vocal range later on and could not hit the high notes , therefore having a flatter and far less interesting sound on his own. If you listen closely to his early recordings compared to later on especially his live recordings you can tell the obvious difference.

So here's the thing... all these 70s CLASSIC genius songs by Elton? He composed them in roughly 20-30 minutes each. Bernie Taupin would write the lyrics by himself first and later he would hand Elton a stack. Elton would look a lyric over and then just instantly compose a timeless classic. The next morning he'd teach it to the band and they'd work out how to approach it, and by bedtime it was done!

This was an absolute mega marathon. The best thing is these songs that you reacted to, I have never seen another reactor reactor to. Bravo. If you want to hear an Elton John song with some wicked guitar, try the Mad Man Across the Water cut with Mick Ronson turning in a spine tingling solo in the outro. I believe it is included on the album Tumble Weed Connection. I have double shot suggestion. Band Maid Manners/Black Hole that is a two for one video. ( Sorry, I am a total Maidiac). Finally, I must admit that your accent has always thrown me. When I first discovered you and Lex, I knew that your accent was not totally rooted in the states. Once I subscribed, You mentioned being born in Germany. Having been a long time fan of many German bands, I certainly heard many German musicians speaking English, but your accent was not like the accent that I was used to. Soon after that you mentioned spending many years in Mexico, so I figured, well that's it, Nick is used to speaking Spanish. But the more I heard you speak, I quickly discovered that you definitely did not have a Spanish accent. Your English diction is too good. So I just settled everything in my own mind that you have a German, Mexican, American accent, and it is perfect. Once again, thank you for your wonderful reactions, Remember. Always stay curious, and continue to explore. Cheers.

In England growing up, I only got to witness the later stuff of Elton John, late 80s/90s stuff was on all the tv channels still.
When princess Diana died and you see him George Michael walking together crying it’s heartbreaking to then listen to his rendered edition of “candle in the wind” / goodbye English rose; moves you to tears in the video - you can see Elton John holding it in as he’s playing - he and George loved her very very much.

Nick, just another great marathon. I was pleasantly surprised to see an Elton John marathon. And Jose, some nice choices. What I loved about Jose's picks is, they were all great songs, but they weren't just the hits that everybody does. It's good to turn people onto the other cuts. But especially the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road songs. All three of those songs are some of my favorites off that great album. I was sitting here watching & singing along with I've seen that movie too, great song.
Nick, what I also loved was your real emotions coming out during those first couple of songs.

Nick, they do have some songs with some rocking guitar. Saturday night's alright for fighting, All the Young Girls Love Alice, the Bitch is back & he does a killer cover of the Who's Pinball Wizard.
Great job Nick, & I just seen you have a Blood Sweat & Tears marathon so I'm going to check that out next.
I would live to request some marathons for myself, have a few different ones that I think you would enjoy. Keep it going Nick

Fantastic! Definitely check out the title track of Madman Across the Water from the album of the same name + Levon, Tiny Dancer, Rotten Peaches, Razorface--then check out the track Madman Across the Water with Mick Ronson on Tumbleweed Connection...THEN...see the video of Elton performing Madman live on BBC's Sounds For Saturday program in 1971 or 72. It's an amazing video, not just for Elton's performance but for the beautiful quality of the videography.

Been an EJ fan since the early 70s, so about 50 years. He's a genius. Love all his songs. Never saw him live, did get to see him in the movie Tommy in 1975 age 14, Loved it. Loved him. Loved the song, loved his Beatle's cover too Lucy in the sky with Diamonds. He has something for everyone. 😊

He was encouraged by Leon Russell who he saw doing what he wanted to do, Leon actually took him on tour with him in early 1970's. He repaid him later in life when Leon wasn't doing well and they recorded an album together and Elton lobbied hard to get him into Hall of Fame

"I've Seen That Movie, Too" has long been one of my favorite of the lesser-known songs by John & Taupin. The whole piece is such a fantastic combination of all aspects of writing and recording. The guitar work, with what sounds like phasing or a similar effect, knocks me out. But the lyrics and singing are spot on, too.

What a great reaction. It's so cool to hear lesser known Elton John songs. I love how his music can make you FEEL SO MUCH!! Please react to the songs We All Fall In Love Sometimes and Curtains. They are back to back on the Captain Fantastic album. If you want to hear BEAUTIFUL MUSIC that will bring tears to your eyes - because it's so beautiful - these songs are a must!! I can't wait to see your reaction!! They move me every time and I want you to feel the same.

I get it. I've always thought "Blues for Baby & me" was such a beautiful song. I've loved it since I was 14 years old. Another one that I think is equally beautiful is "Mona Lisas & Madhatters" from the Honky Chateau album. That one always gets to me as well. "I think it's David Crosby and Graham Nash singing harmony vocals on Cage the Songbird."

Hi Nick, This is such a great marathon. These tracks rarely get heard and I'm not surprised you got emotional. You asked about movies about rock bands that were not as toned down. Look no further than "Almost Famous" based on a true story of an unknown rock band that .....?.....? You need to see the movie to find out what happened to them that actually DID HAPPEN ! The movie is set in the 1970's [ when all this happened ] and the soundtrack is ...Led Zeppelin / Yes / Tod Rundergrun /The Allman Brothers / + many more .... & Nick there is this moment when the Elton John song "Tiny Dancer" comes on which is just brilliant ! The movie tours with this rock group inc' actual live on stage performances and if you get the Special Edition dvd there is more live footage....The movie is over 20 years old now but still sooo good I know you & Lex will love it....& a new 2 cd Deluxe Edition of the soundtrack was released for the 20th anniversairy inc' extra tracks from the group in the movie ... & that very special moment with the Elton John song is on the cd. Byee Jim X

Hi Nick. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the marathon and that you played some lesser known songs. The first elton song i heard was Honkey Cat back when it first came out in the 70s so you can guess how old i am.I immediately bought the LP and after that any time a new Elton album came out I bought it immediately without hearing any song off of it first because i knew it would always be good and I was never disappointed. He is a musical genius the way he is able to take a sheet of lyrics and quickly write a song. There is a TH-cam video where someone gives him a washing machine manual and right on the spot he creates a tune for it on the piano and sings it.Amazing!!!!

That's alright Nick! Blues For Baby and Me is one of Elton's best and it always gets to me too! In 1972 here in Canada we started hearing a song on AM radio called Honky Cat. I guess most of the guys my age (all of eleven) thought it wasn't all that cool because it wasn't yer typical electric-Rock song. For all we knew this Elton John guy might have been a one-hit-wonder. My brother who was four years older than me brought home the Honky Chateau album and later Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. By then there were a ton of great Elton John hits on the radio (and decades) more coming. Been an EJ fan ever since!

Beautiful reaction to one of the greatest musicians of our time. The 1st two songs were only somewhat familiar and I'd never heard the last one, with the gorgeous harmonies of Crosby and Nash! The cuts from GYBR are some of my faves, especially "Grey Seal!" I spent a lot of time with that incredible double album as a teen. It was great to revisit them and give a closer listen to the others!

As great as these songs are, serious Elton fans know there are many other deep cuts that are as good or better. Nothing against this list....it is the AMOUNT of great songs that is incredible. A couple of others "Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters", "Border Song" and "Sweet Painted Lady" being a couple more. Fantastic reaction!
BTW, in the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road time period, Elton would not look at the lyrics from Bernie Taupin only when he was in the studio and would write the music in 20 MINUTES.

@Nick don't ever apologize for having emotions, it comes with the territory of being a musician. You can't be one without having passion for the music, without it you're just a guy with a guitar. To have music spark the emotion for a loved one that brings tears is a testament to the love you have for that person......

I am so appreciative of these selections by Sir Elton you've made Nick!! It just goes to show that there was much more than just the hits these albums produced!! I understand the emotion they bring. Having been a teenager in the 70's, living in the suburbs of Chicago, I was exposed to sooo much unbelievably great music that I would have a tough time where to even start!! This why I appreciate you listening to what I listened to in my younger days (and still do). My two favorite tunes here are "Blues For Baby And Me" and "I've Seen That Movie Too". Thank You for this wonderful reaction.
