    Rice is, and should be considered, both an 8 and a 6. His versatility is an asset. We should be looking for other versatile players, but a 6 priority in my opinion. Against teams that are worse than us, he can play as the 8 and help us dominate. Against teams that are equal or better than us, he can sit as the 6 and provide defensive stability. His ability to do both is really important though.

    The problem with having Rice as a pure 6, his passing distribution is not the greatest.

Or saying ONana can’t pass well enough to be our 6. I feel the same way about fofana. And our 6 does not have to be pacey. It’s probably asking too much to have pace passing and vision. Rice has said he's trying to improve his 8 abilities and his priority is to score more goals, so I think that is where they want him to play.
    They know he can get back and defend really quickly if needed, he has the box to box part of the 8 nailed, it's just the scoring that needs improving and he's working on that.
    I think the 6 is a waste of his box to box abilities, which is why I think they would rather he improve his scoring as an 8 than use him as a 6.
    Can we find an 8 that can match his box to box abilities and also score plenty more goals?
    Might be easier to leave him at 8 to improve his goal scoring, just bring in a 6 to replace Partey which may be easier to find.

    I agree with the comment that a left 8 for next season is more important than the 6. Rice himself said he thinks he is more a 6 than 8, and he is excelling in the position. When Partey and Jorginho departs, Rice will have solidified himself in the position.

    Hello Charles, Cuthbert here from Uganda. I think what we need is a world class left 8, someone capable of taking on multiple players that will support our left winger and make our wings lethal while maintaining the central threat just like Manchester City does. we certainly can't rely on our right wing if we want to win trophies, think about injuries to Saka or Odegaard( God forbid) . Remember Tuchel explaining how arsenal play before the second leg, very predictable

    • @najunacuthbert28
      @najunacuthbert28 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We play high in more than 50% of the games we play in a season and that kind of game play needs someone with a great ball retention and good drilling and take on skills to support our wingers and strikers in tight spaces which I've not seen in rice tbh
      Look at Manchester City with Foden, Bernardo, Rodri all capable of that
      So IMO, I'd go for a left 8/10 to support Odegaard, make us more unpredictable centrally and support the left winger
      My dream would be Musiala- Xavi Simons-Eze in that order

  • @MrDominantForce

    In relation to the midfield recruitment debate. I think we should pay attention to Arsenals more recent strategies which have been to recruit more versatile players that can play multiple positions. It's because of this I think we a more likely to get a player that can play in the 6 and 8 position like Declan. It will provide both competition and be a level raiser and depth at the same time.

    Would not be surprised to see Arteta change "new signing" Timber into a starting 6 and use Rice further forward. Timber looks just the type who'd do well there with his quality. Tomi and Kiwior available at lb and providing quality cover at cb. Wenger did same with Petit who went from lb to cm, leftfield move but could be ideal if club can't identify a realistic quality alternative at budget, and Important to ensure gametime if we have the quality in the squad which I think we do.

    Not even Arsenal bias but Saka and Rice shone, Rice showed his importance, lucky to have him to allow that experiment with Trent, you could put anyone in midfield with him because I think we all forgot how much of an elite 6 of his, due to his great performances in the 8 towards the end of the season. He was our second best player on the pitch. Saka was also very good.
    I agree with that first comment, maybe we should target an 8 with having rice already in that 6 position, I think it’s all dependent on what’s available in the market, but also we need to solidify Rice’s position so it’s how we view him moving forward.

    Hi Charles, regarding the centre of midfield I'm in two minds trying to predict what we'll do. Part of me thinks Onana just because we were heavily linked in Jan and he's the type of player Arteta seems to want ie tall, athletic (like the invincibles) and he probably feels he has the ability to get the very best out of him consistently, but then part of me thinks Arteta will look for someone who can play both 6 and 8 or an 8 that can play wide simply because you look at the team he likes players who are versatile and can play a two, even three positions and create unpredictability.
    Cheers Phill.

  • @Ash_Mead
    @Ash_Mead 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    He’s not a ceiling raiser and we all know that, but when we talk about Arsenal signing floor raisers, Onana fits that mould perfectly.
    He’s the perfect replacement if Partey leaves. He’ll be much more available than Partey, prem proven, and an absolute monster to bring on either with or for Rice. Arteta is obsessed with his duels (or as he says it, duELs 🇪🇸) and Onana is a duel monster. He can also pass despite what people say - I’m currently watching him make line breaking pass after line breaking pass for Belgium against Slovakia.
    It’s a perfect market opportunity in my opinion. He’s rough around the edges, but who better to mould him than Teta. No way does it stop our hunt for an LCM though. I think Jorginho will likely become the Elneny of the squad.

  • @mattc1176
    @mattc1176 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    On Rice as 6/8… we always say he improves his game each year. I think the choice comes down to what you want him to focus on developing. If he’s going to be a 6, he isn’t as good as Partey or Jorginho at receiving the ball facing his own goal & being able to progress it in a tight spot. So that’s where he would be focussing improvement. If he’s going to be an 8, he needs to further develop his game in the final third.
    Even if you could sign a Wirtz or Musiala, you’d be taking a big hit vs Rice in that position when you don’t have the ball. In a really big game, Rice at 8 plus a proper 6 would still be a really appealing combo. Against City would you rather have Rice + Wirtz or Rice + Bruno?
    There’s also a need to think about longer term squad planning in this decision. Arsenal have 3 very good options at 6 now - this time next year they might only have 1. The reality is you need to sign one midfielder this summer and another next year. I think you want at least one of those to be a ‘potential’ signing rather than the £££ a ‘finished article’ would command.
    If there’s someone that they have earmarked as a long term ‘finished article’ option that they can’t get this year, maybe you wait - and you sign the ‘potential’ option this summer instead to give them a year to develop behind the existing squad. I recognise that everyone wants the ceiling-raiser now - and rightly so - but there aren’t many of them full stop - and even fewer if you have less than £100m to spend.
    Both Madrid and PSG have more top quality options in midfield than they can offer starting game time to. Maybe another Odegaard opportunity presents itself there?

  • @alfredthegreat9543
    @alfredthegreat9543 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The comment about Rice was correct- his weakness being medium to long passes that split the line- so 8 is best for him, but as the other comment said- there's more of a market at no. 8 than no. 6 so may be easier to buy. No. 6 prerequisites - 6ft+, strong, quick in bursts, reads the game, quick thinker, can play in our system, has a bit of bite. So tricky because who fits those attributes? I'm going to say it again (you read out one of my comments regarding this a couple of months ago)- if we hear Arsenal are looking for/sign a right back, then I think Ben White will move to No. 6. I can absolutely see it because he is a total baller- and you remember in the Amazon Arsenal show one of the coaches was saying how he is the best at reading the game? It just makes sense- no really good No. 6 options out there, already knows our pattern of play and what the position requires, was a CB before so understands what is needed, and has the brains.

    The answer to the midfield question is so much more complicated than a 6 or 8. LB alone has a massive impact. I could see Rice's ultimate position next season being more about who we can actually get a deal done for.
    Dreaming here, but if we can get Musiala Declan's at 6. If we can get FDJ he's at 8. Then there's always the 3rd option of Mikel is smarter than all of us and its something else entirely, which is almost certainly what will actually happen.

    I don't think we really need to pre-decide on a 6 or 8 position signing and concentrate solely on that.
    I think because we know how fantastic Rice can play in either position we go out and find the best option that plays in either of those positions and bring them in, letting Rice play in the other role.

    We are already in a fantastic position with this squad, I don't fancy Onana, you might as well keep Sambi on. We urgently need to resolve the leftback position and deeper cover for the rightback. Resolving leftback will bring Marinelli up and he will start coming up with the goods for us (and give better balance too). We need someone fast and hard there. We are winning games where we are challenged physically (and that has always been where you win the league - mentality).
    Unless we can get Rodri I would like to see someone who is gifted enough to play 8 and 6 so that we have the fluidity to play a 352 with wingbacks inverting (or not) so that the sixes need to fill the 8 positions, creating overloads in areas as per the game-plan.
    Week in week out we have a situation where B is doubled up on, that means that there is an unmarked Arsenal shirt to pass to. Getting the ball to that overload is the key to ripping opponents apart. We seem to avoid quick switches to the left flank...

    One other reason i think we need a better No.8 on the left side is out left side attack has been very dull this season. Trossard performed but he was inconsistent and Martinelli had a dip in form. Havertz isn't a player who helps player build up and puts up great passes. Odegaard had so much burden when last season started. He had to press forward,move the ball, give out great passes and has to go down to help the build up. I think the ceiling raiser should be an No.8 who can help the left side attack more dangerously and can take the burden off Odegaard.

    Rice should continue to develop at left 8. He brings a great all round box to box impact and we get the best out of him in that position.
    At 6 I feel like there's a cap of what he can do simply because he isn't a naturally dynamic passer from that position. Further forward he gains momentum and has a greater effect on the game.
    In American football we have a term called "down hill runner" to me that's Rice further forward.

    Thanks for the great content as always. Regarding you wish to sign Olise. He is clearly a top top player, but I'm not sure he fits what Arsenal needs right now. We lack the pacy kind of winger in the mold of Neto or Williams. Olise is more the creative one, actually he's very similar to Saka in his playing style imho. If we would sign him, he would probably want to be guaranteed a starting position or a chance to fight for one, and not just be Sakas backup. Where would he start in your opinion? The only place I see him starting is the left 8, and I'm not sure if that's his best position on the pitch.

    Charles, I like Onana as an option. You say he has inconsistency with a good game followed by couple bad ones, but he was playing in an Everton team who struggled all season. And he was a standout - like branthwaite.
    I'd like to think if he came into the team that his level would increase and with better players around him he'd be a better, more consistent player himself. The belief within the team is that you have to fight for everything and help your teammates in all capacities, and I don't think Arteta would accept having someone who isn't fully onboard with that - he'd be left behind. Rice admitted it was a v steep learning curve getting used to how, and more importantly, why Arteta wants to play the way he does, so I certainly think Onana would come in and improve all aspects of his game.
    I think he'd be a great addition to the squad - one of those who have more to learn and get better, at a fairly decent price just now in an inflated market.
    Cheers. Keep up the great work, COYG
    Calum

    Arsenal need a L8 more. Xhaka hasn't been replaced yet. Zinchenko is a decent L8...a proper L8 will reactivate Martinelli as a dangerous attacking threat.

    I agree declan can play no. 8 but he is not a natural number 8.
    With Rice, Partey and Jorginho next season we are not short of no 6s.
    We need a threat a real number 8/10 with numbers. Goal scoring numbers. Musiala, Eze, Paqueta, type players

    Q: Hey CW,
    why spend all the money in the summer window. Seems everyone did that last year and nobody had anything to spend in the winter window and there were players to be had. If we find a player to fit the 6 or 6/8 and if Ramadale leaves a new #2, then keep the rest of the powder dry unless the perfect signing is avalible. I haven't looked super close at the "rules" but there is no law a team has to spend as much as possible as soon is it starts burning a hole in the pocket.
    Cheers, Rico

    Tbh I think we'll probably need both a 6 and a left-8. Against the better sides who are capable of pushing us back we'll probably want more of press-resistant controller / distributer as the 6 with Rice as the 8; and against sides where we dominate possession and have them pegged back in their own box then we'll probably want more of a creative, goal-scoring 8 with Rice as the 6, making sure we don't get caught on cheap transitions. As things stand I'd probably prioritise the 8, but that might change if Partey moves on.

    Hi Charles, I’m seeing loads of reports linking Arsenal with a loan move for Xavi Simons - what’s your take on him?
    I absolutely love him as a player, and think he’s got everything you’d need in a forward and can play in so many different positions.
    A wonderkid at a top team from a young age who has been the victim of the hype around him and yet to reach his full potential? We’ve seen this script before…
    My only issue though is I’m not a fan of a straight loan. A loan spell under Arteta would most likely increase his market value (possibly significantly), and it gives PSG the opportunity to hold us to ransom to get him the following season.
    As gifted a player as he is, either there’s an option to buy attached to the loan, or we move on!

    Rice doesn’t have the creative technical ability of an 8 against elite elite competition, yes against a Burnley or a normal prem game, but not an 8 against a Bayern Munich we saw when he was moved to 6 against Bayern we started playing so well

    I'm of the opinion that a left 8 is the priority but I don't agree with the profiling of attack oriented midfielders or no. 10 like Musiala or Wirtz for the left 8 role as there will be little to no control in midfield. We need an all action midfield like Guimaraes who can control the tempo, attack, defend and provide cover at no. 6

    I'm not sure it's a question of better or worse than rice at 6 or 8.
    It's attributes that the player is capable of. Rice can tackle, intercept, read the game beautifully etc etc. He's a barnstorming runner and a neat passer... HOWEVER he isn't necessarily brilliant in tight spaces and he isn't the most creative passer, even though he has improved there.
    So
    It's a choice, do we want the tckling defensive abilities at the base of the mid, or higher up the pitch for turnovers. Its not better or worse. it's where Arteta most prefers rice's assets on the pitch. Given his interest in zubimendi, he wants a player who can dictate the tempo and use rice's defensive abilities further up the pitch for the turnovers. In some instances, arteta will want rice more defensive and a player who can arrive late in the box in the left 8...
    We need to be unpredictable, so to narrow the question to better or worse seems reductive and not in keeping with where Arsenal are headed as a team.

    For the midfield its not so much if its an 8 or a 6. Its more the profile. If we go with a LB of Tomi then the midfield needs another off the ball monster with break the lines passing midfielder. If its Timber who based on the small sample we have seen who does the line breaking passes and is part of the build up, then we can look for a more Jorginho like midfielder. Really depends on how we want to build up our passing lanes. The versatility on the Left is so huge that it's now hard for us outside the club to pinpoint what it should look like.

    I have a different take on the rice situation. His skills would be far better used further up the pitch, winning tackles closer to the opposition box and also minimizes his weaknesses which are undoubtably progressive passing and dictating the play. We may have a hard time finding a #6 that has the ball winning ability of rice but finding someone who is a better version of what jorginho provides who can anchor the midfield, play line breaking passes and be the metronome in midfield would be possible and the best option for our squad.

    Arteta is stubborn. He clearly wants Rice to be more expensive and sees him ultimately playing further up the pitch. As much as I agree that Rice as a 6 is much harder to upgrade, I don't see Arteta changing his mind and the fact he is pursuing Onana tells me he is unlikely to sign an 8

  • @danielnyanjagha4976
    @danielnyanjagha4976 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Rice is good playing as a 6, defensively he is a monster but he can't make progressive risk passes in the middle of the pitch like Jorginho or Partey do. And that's why we didn't perform that well during the first part of the season. He could not release he ball fast enough to our attackers. Rice is a ball carrier and that is why the 8 role suits him, because he can can get himself everywhere around the pitch, attacking and defending. I think Arteta is looking at a 6 who can make those risk passes. He might not be as good as Rice defensively but if he is closer to Partey the better.

    In this current arsenal team, does the striker need to be a big man who can hold up the ball (havertz, sesko, toney etc) or is there space for a smaller player who can run in behind. I say this after watching openda come on for belgium and cause problems with his lightning pace

    Wasn't Havertz supposed to be our new left 8 that can add goals and also fill in out wide if needed? I love Havertz at Arsenal and backed him from day one, but if we're looking to add that number 8 again this summer is that at least a partial admission the transfer plan failed?

    Rice is a towering #6, and if Partey leaves especially, why move Rice up to left 8 where he isn't towering? We have a few players who play well in that position already, or buy one. Jorginho to back up Rice at 6.

    I remember such a dilemma with Kante if rice is 6 or 8. He is one of the best box-to-box midfielder in the world. He is best defensively with his interception, tackling, and tracking back... but I do not believe he is best suited for 6. his positional game is not as good as it needs to be at this label and it would be a crime to confine him in number 6 position.
