This is not the actual ending. Basically, Wukong planned this all along in order to be rid of the circlet that made him obey the Heavens, so he let Erlang kill him so that he could reincarnate as a free monke.
In the secret ending's, it is rather implied that he did just that. When Erlang was about to defeat him he asks why he even tries to defy heavens since the circlet is still gonna be on his head forever. To which Wukong says to watch him rip it off and be free. But then he gets killed, or rather lets Erlang kill him, as Erlang admits that no matter how many times he defeats Wukong only Wukong can kill himself.
When the Destined One witnesses all of these Wukong's memories he rejects the circlet the old monke is about to put on him. He's now a true Sun Wukong's reincarnation with full powers and memories. And most importantly, free. Just as planned.
