    *WHAT HAPPENED*
    After what looks like a bit of a zoo jump, these jumpers wound up very far off the dropzone. They appear to have attempted to get back to the landing area, and when they realized they couldn’t, were forced to land off. This jumper got very lucky and, with very few options to pick from - and a lot of power lines and telephone lines around - managed to set down in a backyard… but clipped a tree in the process, probably because he was bailing at the last second to avoid the fence or a tree!
    *WHY DID IT HAPPEN*
    Spotting Fail
    The jumper who submitted this video was the first to admit, "My job to check spot…Failed. Whole group landed off." That's as succinct a point as can be made and we'll leave it at that!
    *HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED*
    Check Your Spot!
    Never trust the green light and never trust the group in front of you. Before you get out of the plane, if you're the first person getting out for your group, take a look down and make sure you're getting out close enough to the dropzone to get back safely. If the group behind you starts yelling at you to get out, tell them that the green light came on too early and that you're not getting out until you're in a safe location to do so. You owe it to yourself, and to the rest of your group who are depending on you to make the decision for them. If you're unfamiliar with the dropzone or uncomfortable checking the spot, ask someone who is from the area to do it. Tandem videographers are particularly great about helping out with this!
    Earlier Choices/Situational Awareness
    When you know you’re not going to make it to the dropzone, you need to start looking around immediately and finding the best opportunity for where you can land. Every second that you’re losing altitude, you’re also losing options. The earlier you make a decision, the more likely you are to find a safe spot to set down. (That matters even more when you’re flying a performance canopy which is going to need a bit more room to land.) Further, when you find yourself in a bad spot, it’s important to look around for ALL your options. You know how in the briefing the flight attendants tell you that in an emergency, the closest exit may be behind you? Well, that applies here as well! One thing we never see this jumper do is look behind themselves to see if there were any good landing options in the other direction.*
    *ADDITIONAL NOTES*
    Author’s Note*
    Fun fact! This was the dropzone where the post author/editor had his first off-landing! He wound up trusting the group ahead of him, who had gotten out without checking the spot, and it turns out the green light had come on early. He was in the same area as these jumpers and will be the first to admit there are not a lot of great options. However, he brings up the point about looking in the other direction because that’s where he landed, and, at least five or six years ago, there were a few spots that were a bit better than where these jumpers landed.

    He had soo much time to decide on safer landing spots. Makes it worse with a semi-hook turn with low confidence, whooshing the power lines. He also Violated the prioties of landing.
    I've found myself in a lot these situations. The skills acquired from the Flight 101 & 102 canopy courses came to the aid. Any terrible landing you can walk away from, celebrate 🎉 🎉 🎉

      Do you know why he made hook turn ? it's his plan or he change his mind last second

      @@theaoooooo Those insta 360 cameras don’t show depth very well at all so it’s hard to tell what this jumper was seeing in real life but to me it looks like he was probably aiming for the area behind the house rather than the front yard but being above roads, buildings and trees does wild stuff with turbulence in the air so I’m guessing he lost altitude quicker than anticipated and ended up having to thread the needle between obstacles.

    There was a huge clearing on his/her 7 o'clock. You can see another jumper with light blue canopy actually landing there. Why this jumper chose to go to densely obstructed area when it was obvious there was no way to make it back to the DZ? Arrogance and overestimation of skills?

    • @drewmikhael31
      @drewmikhael31 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want to know that as well, that clearing has more than enough room for multiple canopies.

    It's sad they had such a bad spot on what looks like a very clear day... but it happens. From my experience when this happens... you have to analyze the terrain fairly quickly whilst you are at altitude, find a clearing, check for obstacles (especially power lines). Try and decipher wind direction and then do everything in your powers to get safely to that clearing. Don't be at a very low altitude not knowing where you are going to exactly land.... you can't do a go-around like an aircraft!

      to be aware of all the powers, situational awaraness and paranornal skilllz, some paranormal skizz are aquitert. after all these years I think i have some experience. 🧐 most important check is be at intended dropzone to check it out . we have a simpel rule. make a selfi the day before at the landing zone. tan you know all the opsticals there. SkyGods will elude them + geve the audience a spectaculer show💕💕🕤🕤🏋‍♀🏋‍♀🏆🏆.

    The green light means you MAY exit, not you MUST exit. Spotting, people, spotting.

      @argh100100 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Still, it happens a lot that the first one makes a bad spot or does not spot at all. When it's cloudy it also happens that you cannot accurately see where you are and you go anyways. You should be able to handle yourself in such a situation.

      sooner or later you will have to land in an area like this, sure talk about spotting but canopy control rules

      @@yarpos not necessarily bro. Depends on your DZ location and the environment around it.
      It’s not inevitable, it’s unfortunate and close to 25 years skydiving I have to call bull shit on that man. There’s no sooner or later, there’s only that one moment where you need to decide what you’re going to do in an emergency landing…

    I would REALLY like to know why they didnt choose the giant clearing to 7 O'Clock (at 1.12min in vid). Another canopy looks to be choosing that route (proximity isnt that bad esp after a turn). Am i missing something?

    Anyone else notice he was only using the right toggle to control the angle of descent? This meant there was no flare or brief moment of lift to soften the landing or ability to correct to the left. This smells of Code Brown panic mode.

    There was such a huge field off to the left that the yellow canopy in front of you peeled off towards, why didn't you just follow him there? (Just asking, friend; please don't think I'm "attacking" you) I was taught that a downwind landing IN A CLEAR AREA is better than a headwind landing into trees or houses or power-lines. Glad you're okay.😅

  • @TwilightSun32

    I had a lot of "far off the dropzone" landings (for different reasons in different places). So I could say there (on video) is a lot of place to land but not for landing after such a turn... landing on a video looks very random, like one doesn't even bother to know what's down there until the last moment.

    From my armchair, it seems that it was very clear from right when he opened that he wasn't going to make it back. Then, rather than wasting precious altitude trying to get closer, it would be better to abandon all thought of making an attempt to get back, and instead use all all your focus and energy identifying a good landing spot that's within reach, rather than having all your options dwindle and leave you with nothing but danger-filled spots. Considering how bad this could have ended, he was pretty lucky.

  • @420

    Anybody else think he guy could've turn left early on and avoided all of this? I need more details, because it just seems so odd he didn't just go left into the field. Something else going on?

    Что?.. целое поле слева по курсу?? - это для слабаков! - Щимиться, так в частные владения! - мимо проезжей части, высоковольтных кабелей, сосен, штакета - с фан-тас-тическим везением ублюдок!! :)

    Looks like you walked away no damage done so all good.
