Good to see that 475 is all better! I’m honestly shocked it only took 5 days to fix the smoke box cover. I’m also extremely glad that it has the 8 inch hooter whistle again!
Many of us are glad to hear it. Don’t get me wrong, I like the SP-6, but the Hooter hits just right and it’s historically accurate, so hopefully it’ll stay a while like the 6 Chime did.
It always sounds better with the 8 inch hooter. It’s just a very happy whistle. The 12 inch sounds like it’s sick and sad the banshee and that one inch shooter they did on 90 the one time. Also terrible. Those super high pictures don’t even cycle whistle I do like the custom PRR three on it some time. It’s more of a true train, whistle, and very mysterious in a good way/interesting
Strasburg 475 repaired and back in service. The welding is visible as a reminder of the incident. The old smokebox door was completely destroyed. N&W 475 is back in service less than a week after the 475 vs Excavator incident.
great catches and video of 575 being back up and running agin after a little crash with a little big diger awesome catch to of it having a whstle battle with an amtrak
I’m surprised 475 is back already. I was expecting it to take months since Steam Locomotives are a lot of work. But I’m guessing Strasberg RR has a ton of the right equipment. I think they did a great job, and big thanks to them. And I’m glad 475 has that hooter back, the Ghost Whistle it recently had was great but I like the hooter better because I know it’s had it for quite sometime and it shows the true voice of the 475.
That was so close to being a real dangerous situation had that arm punched that flue sheet. So glad all involved are safe and remember that complacency is a serious threat while on any job
Knew they would fix her relatively quick. Have had the privilege of running her up and down the railroad a few times, and she is one of my favorite locomotives period. This is a relief. Hopefully they stick with letting the OG crews running for a while.
It feels weird to see it passing that fabled spot where the incident originally happened. I'm not a massive fan of American steam locomotives, (mostly the Shay type with the strange driveshaft system) but 475 is quite a nice one. Great to see her back out and running again like she should be.
It's great to see her back so soon after an incident that could have been so so much worse. However, I would not be surprised if at some point they fabricate a new smokebox door to replace the one they welded back together.
Curious where they acquired the new smokebox door, assuming they didn't repair the one that was punctured. (I wouldn't put it past them to be able to do that!) Anyone know?
So 475 might be back in service but what changes have been made to the railroad's operating procedures so that kind of negligence isn't allowed to recur? Not heard anything from management apart from their efforts in getting the webcam company to have videos banned from TH-cam.
I suppose it was fortunate that that excavator hit 475's face with a perfect bullseye; it meant there was only one component that needed any real work done.
I've been to Strasburg, and I wish the Museum had a way of turning at least the locomotive and tender at both ends of the line. I don't like the look of the locomotives running backwards for either the outbound or in bound portions of the trip. A wye, loop track or a turntable would be wonderful.
never happened. 611 doesn't even go on the Amtrak main when doing runarounds at paradise. and the Amtrak line is on a completely different switch set. so no and it would of made the news hard

I have to say that I am very impressed with the Strasburg railroad for fixing the 475 so quickly. In my opinion, they have excellent skills.

Well, since 2018 475 managed to get her 8” hooter back. I have a feeling it was used on Cumbres & Toltec 489, or 489 wore an identical whistle.
Sounds a bit like the German Federal standard whistle!
Glad to see 475 back on the rails again, I'm surprised it only took 5 days to fix that smoke box, and it still has that good old 8 inch whistle.

Awesome work!
Excellent!
I can see the lines where they pieced the smokebox door back together. I'm guessing they welded it?
They brazed-weld it

Fantastic video ❤
It makes me happy to see her steaming up a storm again. I almost thought she was done for as her smoke box got smashed pretty bad.
The Smokebox door looks like it was never broken
Really? I can see scars.
@@trainfan998 I think you are right. Looks like welding marks on it. Am amazed it was fixable at all. Looked like a solid punch to the nose

Very nice video, well done!
It's nice hearing the Hooter again. I've grown tired of that SP 6
I guess that were a few heartaches in Virginia transportation museum as they are holding all the Norfolk and Western steam locomotives at this site.
Welcome back, Strasburg 475!
What happened to the SP 6 chime whistle that was on her?
Off, and hopefully for a while. I like the SP-6, but the Hooter hits just right and it’s historically accurate.

Its time same door they just welded it back together. You can see some of the welding scars if you look closely
Also they can make their own parts

Love that whistle

They aren’t the Reading and Northern they don’t have room for that! Plus locomotives ran tender first almost as much as they ran forward facing.
