Tbf, T800 was very slow, he should have just kept on attacking, but maybe he couldn't, or knew T1000 would escape anyway, because of his more advanced prototype, still, if you're screwed either way, better to go out, swinging, fortunately, he found the big machine gun at the end, with super bullet.

One instance in film history where the symbolism trumps any kind of logical explanation, fact that takes away the magic of it somewhat. The idea he'd connected with humanity so much through John to develop tenacity in the face of death/shutdown was enough.
Was storage space so scarce they couldn't fit some information on other Terminators there? You'd think that's the kind of information they would have in abundance since it's not enemy intel.
jedijones The T-1000 was partly self aware in its own right. This is why skynet only produced prototypes and few of them as it represented a threat to itself if not kept in check. Thats probably a reason why skynet didn’t want them having more information on itself than necessary. The more they know the more the greater the threat they pose to their creator
One of the overlooked aspects of this scene when Sarah dropped that single shell is that it also comes into play later, that single extra shell would have been enough to put the T1000 into the molten steel. Can't believe it took me forever to piece that together, what an amazing movie.
Then when shes reloading at the end, she has her other hand cupped underneath to catch any more shells in case she drops them too.

"I know this hurts." is such a great line. It doesn't really understand what pain is but it understands that what it is doing causes a human pain and humans don't like that.
That line stuck with me too. He’s a sadist, but not in a “I derive pleasure from this” sort of way, but in a “this is the easiest way for me to do my job” kind of way. It’s so chilling

When you see the T1000 splash around in the molten steel, you can't help but wonder, if he actually felt pain, the way it freaks out, is quite disturbing and unusual.
The performance by Robert Patrick was nothing but amazing. There will never be a better T-1000 ever. No expression, yet so scary.
thats the scary thing about him he felt like a normal person yet something was off about him.
He looked like a bird of prey, eyeing its next victim. Emotionless, unblinking, single minded and cold as ice. Perfect acting.
They put some kind of solution on Arnold's skin made with KY jelly to give him that not quite right look in some scenes. I wonder if they did the same with Robert Patrick, because he has a certain uncanny look to him, with the perfect uniform with no wrinkles, and hair that is always perfectly styled.
Cameron will always be my favorite. The guy has forgotten more about film making than most directors will ever know.
You're crediting the wrong person.... the director is the one who brings out the best out of an actor ... put that actor with the same script with a different director ... different outcome.

I think that in both the extended and original cut, the T1000 is quite aware of its limitations. It has already tried to fool John once by imitating his fostermother and he wasn't convinced in the first place. So it understands that John wouldn't fall easily for the mimicry trick, which it uses only as a last resort. In the original cut, its suspicions are confirmed, with John understanding who is the real Sarah Connor by just hearing them both. In the extended edition we also have the problem of the glitches, whice are one more reason for the T1000 to try to exploit the authenticity of the real Sarah Connor, who is also in pain.
The line "I know why you cry now" still makes me tear up a bit. An amazing movie.

Robert Patrick’s ability to be menacing, even while sharing a scene with an actor significantly larger than him, is absolutely incredible.
That is what made this whole confrontation the next level. T-1000 is smaller and more lean, while T-800 is huge and athletic, but we're fkn scared of T-1000 and worry for T-800
Ironically, Robert is actually a sweet and funny guy in real life. He also loved playing pranks. If anyone gave him a hard time, he'd give them that cold T-1000 stare, and they'd get scared and back off. And he'd get a kick out of it too, lol.

You have to switch your brain off & enjoy the super sfx & completely ignore what was said in the untouchable first film much of which precluded ANY follow up & enjoy its mindlessness.........

Jet Jenkins there’s a clip on TH-cam behind the scenes of making T2. The amount of time they spent filming this movie was insane. That’s why it was great from beginning to end.
What made the T800 so terrifying in the first film was how relentless it is. It doesn’t stop no matter how much you beat it, shoot it, or maim it. If you take away it’s legs it will crawl, if you take away it’s arm it’ll just use the other one. It will keep going until it’s fulfilled it’s objective.
That very thing that made the T800 so terrifying, makes it so inspiring in T2. No matter how much damage it takes, whether it be from the cops firing at him or the t1000 beating him down. The T800 kept getting up and being a ardent defender for both Sarah and Connor. T2 is one of the best films ever made
the t800 was superior, yes the t1000 was quicker and stronger, but the t800's relentless goal to save john connor and his mom beat the t1000's desperation to kill the connors

The T-800 never gave up even though it was inferior in every aspect to the T-1000. I think Cameron made an incredible message by telling us a story that perseverance and determination are better than pride and overconfidence.
They were two machines, each trying to complete its mission.

Actually the T-1000 has it's own issues. It's still only a prototype so various faults and small-scale errors would be present. like the fact that repeated damage would end up causing morphing issues and whatnot.

You can tell the T-1000 is just fed up with the T-800 trying to stop him that in this fight he actually goes out of his way to beat the T-800 to death
Every confrontation between the two up to this very fight was the T-1000 basically just shrugging off the T-800 so it could continue its pursuit of John, This is the one and only time in the whole movie that the T-1000 focused its energy solely on killing the T-800.
It only had one arm and the T-1000 still couldnt finish it. Lol

And yet, you can still find a logic to its villainous prowling around the 2.4. Examining to see if it's damaged enough that it's no longer going to be a problem. When it sees it's reaching for a weapon, it realizes the 2.4 is still functioning and goes for the kill. Jam the bar in there, wrench it around to bend the chassis and expose the power cell, then puncture the power cell with the last hit.

The T 800 is powered by 2 hydrogen fuel cells as its shown in Terminatir 3,Here only the first one was damage and the Terminator used the second fuel cell as an alternate power source....If you watch Terminator 3 The Terminator thrown out one of its hydrogen fuel cell while driving and it create a huge explosion because it contains nuclear

I swear to God, the moment when T-100 wakes up with that "alternate power" thing, and starts tearing out that spike from under him.. that's one of my most favourite T2 moments. Perseverance, even in a machine.

@@mattdubya1037 It's actually never clarified in the movies. In T1 Kyle specifically said T-101, and only mentioned that series 600 was older. So from the info we have from movies only, it is logical to call it T-101.
There will never ever be a Terminator movie like this, a masterpiece of a movie Arnie is just perfect here, Robert Patrick is just amazing as the T-1000, LInda is amazing and Edward is incredible they will never make another movie like this. Just stop milking this incredible series let the franchise rest.

The Terminator and Terminator 2 are the only ones we need. Hands down, period.
Pretty rare that a sequel is even better than a blockbuster original. Hard to believe it’s almost 30 years old. It still stands up, doesn’t look outdated at all.
One problem I always had with this scene was if the T-1000 can take shape of everything it touches then he could of killed Sarah and found John himself.. Just an observation..
This movie simply never gets old and there will never be anything like it.
The effects still look very impressive, even today. Though I do wonder how Mr. Patrick must feel when he looks back on his old films, especially T2, and sees how fit, sharp, and handsome he used to be.

2:28 the part I like here (and in whole movie) is how un-robotic T-1000 actually is. Instead of going maximum efficiency and finishing T-800 off the moment it falls down, severely damaged and prone, he actually enjoys watching him crawl towards the gun, like a predator with it's deadly wounded prey's last gasps of life. Giving him hope that he'll grab that weapon, only to strike final deadly hit moments before he grabs it. He expresses pride here, sadism, and dominance, which all transcend robotic behavior.
That's kind of the whole underlying theme of their growth. The T-800 was learning just as was the T-1000, though the T-800 was being guided by John Connor about the rights and wrongs of the world, so it leaned more into the embracement of humanity and compassion where's the T-1000 didn't have any such guidance so it leaned harder into being a sadistic killer.
@@nathanmcdonald610 The T-1000 was programmed to imitate human emotion and expression so that it could get around without arousing suspicion but I think that over time, it really did develop emotions of its own and expressed them even when there was no need to.
I think that even the T-1000 was getting frustrated with the T-800's constant thwarting of his attempts to kill John so it became reckless and sloppy as well as twisted and sadistic.
I noticed this too. He had a bit of sadism he learned from human interaction. Just watch how he looks down and watches like “that sucks, now you’re screwed” when Sarah drops the shotgun shell through the grate floor. Or when he regenerates later and does the finger wag. So menacing and badass.

I don't think I've seen anyone ever point this out but the T-1000 goes through a slight character arc just as the T-800 did that humanizes both of them. Although the T-1000 didn't go through a full transformation it's intriguing to see how the T-800 went from a cold, soulless killing machine which only concern was it's objective and completing it like a soda machine dispensing your drink but by the end John has taught it what exactly it's protecting and why it's important. It learns what humans really are and comes into an understanding of life itself, and yet sadly it knows that it will never truly experience what it means to be alive itself, which is a beautifully sad thing. I'm getting so tired and over the theme of giving machines a full sense of awareness and emotion when they're machines, the best we'll ever accomplish is an imitation of life, that's it but that doesn't mean they're alive. The T-800 understood that when it said, "I know now why you cry, but it is something I can never do" and it was 100% right, it's nothing but 1s and 0s.
And coming back to the T-1000 instead of learning the value of life it comes into it's bit of self awareness in it's growing, disturbing, interest devaluing life. At first it efficiently and quickly killed anyone that got in it's way with the police officer and shoved aside people that were beneath it's notice once John was in it's sight. Yet as time went on it somehow developed an understanding of pain and was fascinated by the concept, the way it took a moment to stare at John's dead foster father and then began to slowly kill people when it made no logical sense to take it's time doing so. All it needed to do was touch Sarah and it could shapeshift into her, yet for some reason it wanted to toy with her just a bit and get her to call to her son instead of doing it itself and killing an immediate threat that's been hindering it. And by the end it seems it even started to develop a sense of self preservation once it realized what the T-800 had hit him with. It was shocked and scared and you could clearly hear that for the first time it was somehow suffering pain as it's weird disgruntled and unsettling moans sounded off until it fell into the lava and you can hear that it's panicking. It such a masterfully creepy scene when compared to the first T-800's death in which it was crushed, but it didn't seem to care that it was being destroyed, because it had no sense of self-preservation, it didn't feel anything not even a desire to kill. It was simply fulfilling it's task and simply broke in attempting to do that. In that sense it wasn't really being killed, Sarah literally was just breaking it into pieces. But the T-1000 very much conveyed a sense of "I'm dying" and it was creepy.
Yeah and the T-1000 began to show a sadistic side when it was beating up on "Uncle Bob " during their second confrontation in the steel factory when it recovered from being skewered by the iron rod
Clearly the 1000 was set to evolve. It has a mind of it’s own and more closely resembles some kind of organism. The 800’s come with built in drives and limited processors and all that stuff. Personally i think all this shit is already real or is in the works and just being kept away for the time being. Some fked lab in china korea or japan, the likes of unit 731… i think what happened there is far beyond terrible more like absurd. i think those guys deserve the worst possible punishment a human can have and i also think that was just a fraction of what is actually going on. Just so you know they got away with everything that happened there and actually lived good lives from what I’ve read. This story doesn’t have a happy ending, research at your own risk. It’s very dark for any one mind
That's really insightful that the liquid terminator has character growth. I always thought it was a bit funny that it was described as being emotionless, but seemed to be angry and sadistic. But now that you mention it, it developed it's sadistic nature over the course of the movie. And that flaw was perhaps it's undoing.
@@someguy5977 Well, both the T-800 and T-1000 were learning computers of sorts so they can become more humanlike the longer they are around humans. The T-800 learns compassion and empathy from John and Sarah and grows to genuinely care for John and want to protect him, not just because it's his mission to do so. The T-1000 had no such guidance and does become malicious and sadistic, even a bit reckless as we can see when it risks exposure by killing and causing destruction because it was either getting frustrated with the T-800 constantly meddling with its attempts to kill John, or simply out of pure enjoyment. The T-1000 also got overconfident, not even bothering to check if he truly destroyed the T-800, eventually leading to its demise.
@@Ihavehadmanynames7779 The T-1000 was a prototype that was probably sent back to kill John right after its creation since Skynet realized it was losing the war against humans and became desperate. This likely means that there was not much time to check the T-1000 for flaws and weaknesses. And since it does have a mind and will of its own, Skynet took a big gamble deploying it too. Due to its liquid metal composition, it might have been difficult to install anything that could secure the T-1000's absolute obedience. So if it wanted to, it could easily betray its creator and side with humans or go off and do its own thing. Thus, Skynet did not create too many of them since it didn't want to deal with an army of rebellious T-1000s in addition to rebellious humans. Even one rogue T-1000 can be problematic.

I saw this movie over 20 years ago as a kid. I watch it again after 20 years. And it's still the best Terminator film made to date.

The fluidity of the t1000 jumping from platform to platform and the angles used to shoot this were truly a first of its kind from a direction stand point. Many films around this time would have slow mo or more dramatic angles, but Cameron decides to do everything in real-time and not cut always.
It again enhances the t1000 athleticism and shows more an assassin with martial arts.
hes a very solid technical director, he makes amazing shots, he writes damn good stuff, dude directed, written, produced, and co-edited titanic, the guy is a rock solid director, he has 3 more avatars but yea the dude ruled in the 90s

the T-1000 had no date on the other terminator models, as it wasnt sent back expecting to having ot fight one.
so it didnt know bout the secondary power supply on the t800(or it assumed it was an identical model the one skynet sent the1st time that didnt have one), otherwise instead of stabbing it thru the chest it would likely have lopped its head off

The fight between the two cyborgs is perfectly choreographed and theatrical, it is Shakespeare. That always caught my attention, they would never fight like people do.
One thing I love about the T-800 no matter what you do to it how hard you nail it it will keep coming back somehow.
Arnold is great, but I think that Robert Patrick stole the show: he really nailed it!

Yeah, it just goes to show that you need a good villain for the hero to work as well. The cast was perfect. I've loved this movie since I was 8 or 9 years old and the ending is still poignant and sad. I always admired that this movie had the guts to try to twist the T-800 into a good guy and work all of this into a family dynamic with Arnold, Linda and Eddie and then have the ending be so heart wrenching yet fitting to the story. To me this is the best action and sci fi movie ever.

I'm always struck at how much I catch the more I watch Terminator 2. Here, the parallel between the first T-800 crawling to kill Sarah Connor in a factory and this T-800 crawling for a weapon to fight to protect John.
James Cameron is very great. He is a best director to the world. This film is amazing and a masterpiece.
For sure, this is the most astonishing and epic scene in action movies for all times!!! The scene when Terminator rips a piece of crowbar out of his chest, desperately trying to protect John, just make me burst into tears and runs shivers on my spine. It is such a truly moment in the movie. Bravo director!

This movie should have had Oscar nominations in acting categories. Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick… they were all superb in their roles.

I watched this movie for the first time today... OMFG, was I blown away. I frickin loved the T1000 liquid metal effects, just so many “wow” moments (even now 29 years later). The action sequences were practically perfect and the plot line is unforgettable, but I have to say I really thought Robert Patrick nailed his role. He was so subtly malevolent it was hypnotic. In a nutshell, I loved the movie so much that I had to come back and watch the final battle all over again.

The use of practical and cg effects in this movie is just amazing!
man, this movie was way ahead of its time especially where you're seeing it in remaster version of it.
The special effects were absolutely jawdropping back in the day.
"Jurassic Park" is the only other movie that comes to mind where the effects made similar impression.

I think what people seem to be missing here is that the T-1000 isn't bound so strictly to any programming the way "solid" terminators are. Sure, he is nevertheless aiming to carry out his mission, but there's a certain sinister curiosity to his actions. Why would he impale Sarah in a non-vital spot, when he could easily have killed her right there and immediately taken her place (and voice)? Why let the T-800 crawl to and almost grab his grenade launcher before finally impaling him with the rod? Heck, when he finally has John right in his sights, why didn't he just move in quickly and make the kill?
There's a certain thrill he seems to be getting from "stalking his prey". For a terminator, his actions are uncharacteristically psychotic. It can be said that, given that he's a prototype, his actions and behavior are a side effect to who and what he is. If we take The Sarah Connor Chronicles as canon, the T-1001 chick also acts uncharacteristically. No doubt that Skynet quickly learned of the unpredicability of that model, which is why they weren't mass produced.
Yeah from what I understand the T1000 is basically one giant brain because every individual atom of it needs to be able to do every task for it to rearrange so many ways and still function, which means it quickly develops a mind somewhat independent of Skynet
1. Because he knew he was damaged at this point and he could have screwed up when trying to impersonate Sarah (which eventually happened, his feet melted when he was impersonating her). Also he didn't know human psychology well enough to understand that a protective mother would have never betrayed her son. While it looks somewhat 'human' these scenes actually show that T-1000 was more crude than it appears. 2. He let T-800 crawl, because it took him time to take a good aim at main power can before hitting it. He might also not have seen the launcher at all. Notice that we never get information if T-1000 is actually good at observation. He has to touch objects before imitating them, which suggests he kind of can't see things properly unless he gets in physical contact with them. Perhaps the nanobots or whatever he's made of, have trouble judging distances without physical contact or something. Perhaps he couldn't even recognize the launcher when it wasn't held by someone and moved.
3. He wasn't quick when he finally had John close, because he was malfunctioning heavily and couldn't run at this point. He wanted John to come close to secure the kill, but miscalculated how tough Sarah was.

the sound in this is so amazing - I saw this when it came out (I was 4 lol - thanks Mom and Dad) and just that sound of the steel bar hitting the floor, bouncing 3 times, in combo with the music -- has stayed with me all of these years. So oddly specific but just a small example of why this movie is a true masterpiece

The T800’s single-minded persistence and drive to achieve its mission makes it a terrifying villain. But as a hero those qualities make it hurt to see it getting beaten like that.
Ikr, if the T-800 is a antagonist and still functionable no matter how badly it was damaged, it makes me feels scared because of how this killer machine will do anything that it can do terminate a certain target, and will not stop no matter what. But if it's a protagonist that protects John and seeing the T-800 beaten up so hard, I feel so sad and touched about how it doesn't care about itself being destroyed like that by T-1000 but will do whatever it can to protect John, no matter how hopeless it can be.

I love the physicality of the action. You can feel the weight of punches the T-800 takes.
Jim Cameron movies in general have a great level of realism. It shows he was into physics and optics. None of the new Terminator movies are this believable.
I think the sound design is a big component. Seriously, compare the sound effects for the fights between the Terminators in T2 and Genisys/Dark Fate. In here, they sound like they have a lot of weight and power, where as the sound design for the new films sounds like they stole them from the Transformers sound effects library.

@@medusalem9485 I think that even the T-1000 was getting frustrated with the T-800's constant thwarting of his attempts to kill John. And that frustration caused it to be reckless and sloppy, which eventually led to its destruction.
Imagine how hard it was for the future humans and the Resistance to take down these things. Even more so when they encountered a T-1000 unit.

I like how the T-1000 takes its time to attack Sarah, since she’s not really his main target, he only cares about killing John. But when he realizes that hurting her can draw John out to try and rescue her, that’s when he attacks her.
Nah he just loves it. Look at the Hospital Scene were he copies the Cop. Instead of killing him he waits until the Cop turns around and looks at him. The T-1000 is pure Evil and Sadistic

I know I'm not alone in this one, I remember watching T2 for the first time in the cinema and getting so sad when the T-800 gets beat up, and the feeling when he reboots back to life! Now I'm 41 years old and I still get the same feeling, that's how great the character was developed.
