I bet there's someone with the same laptop having the specs prior to the upgrade, who's happily using it as their daily driver and felt their ears burn when they heard *low specs* and was distracted for the rest of the day with the words "low specs..... low specs.... low specs," ruminating in their head....

Only thing I would have done differently is to add superglue to the cracks on the other side of the cover, then grind it out before painting to mask the crack. I can see the crack through the paint on the left. Otherwise, this is perfect. Great job!

I just restored a similar C850D-11K with the same APU, but slightly different construction details. It got a new SSD, a new battery and I'm now waiting for a used keyboard and a new WiFi/BT-module to arrive. I bought the machine in a very bad and dirty condition and basically did the same job that you did. Love the feeling of giving neglected old things a new life, no matter how big the effort! Mine is running with (Bodhi)Linux now and works so much faster than you'd expect from an old machine like that. Great job and great video of yours!

Pretty awesome laptop for manjaro considering you can only buy a chromebook now for the same price point of these older laptops then. Just need to give it a coat of paint soon!

  • @Killagear5000

    Dear Andrew,
You did a great job showing everyone how you upgraded your laptop into something usable. I recently upgraded my ASUS laptop to 12 GB of RAM from 4GB and added an SSD by taking the optical (CD) drive. Replaced with HDD/SSD caddy. It improved my specs but I find my CPU working way too hard on windows 10. I want to replace the old thermal paste and completely clean my laptop like you did. It must've taken quite some time to complete your project. Windows 7 seems like a better option as well. Overall, excellent job, Andrew.
    Sincerely,
    Richard

    • @Killagear5000
      @Killagear5000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The fixes Andrew applied were very inexpensive; however, if others would like to add a better GPU by taking out the onboard wireless adapter it may be cheaper to go with a newer laptop with better specs like an HP.

I disassembled my Toshiba Satellite. Had an AMD e-300 clocked at 1.3Ghz, Radeon HD 6300m, 250 GB hard drive and 2GBs of RAM. I'll find something stupid to do with it eventually :) Thinking about mounting the display to my desk somehow, but I need a driver board for it which can be found relatively cheaply. As for the computer itself, it's trash until it gets an SSD, Windows 10 and 4-8 GBs of RAM. Very slow!

Video well done Cat and Andrew ! , One thing to notice , The HDD shouldn't be in the Drive bay , because it uses less Power, and on shutdowns , restarts or sleep , the reader stop suddenly without having time to reset it's position , that harms the hard disk , you can search it up , instead put the SSD in the bay drive and boot from it , since it doesn't have moving parts , it's safer , it might lower everything to Sata 2 but works like a charm ! Like this so i get you've seen this and tell me if i'm right or wrong , if i'm right i hope you apply this in your future Videos ! Have a good day .

if you noticed, the cpu is soldered to the mainboard which makes it almost impossible to upgrade. There were some of the older laptops (Lenovo G505 and 505s for example) which had a socketed cpu. The issue would be getting an updated bios that would support a more powerful cpu, and of course the board would have to support it also. My 505 I can go from an AMD A4 1500 to an A4 1800 (if the bios will support it) although the socket is the same type.

Music in your videos has improved. 2- Even though the repair view is a delight, i think the $ and effort for some of them is not worth it. 3- Nice of you to paint but keep it simple for next ones. It looks odd. 4- For the reinforcement, i would have used plastic. Metal parts can come into contact with something and generate a short circuit. 5- What about a custom case? some videos around with old laptops inside wood cases.

I have the laptop with kinda the same design but with an i3 3110m...someone threw it away and i picked it up with a broken hinge and without charging port, hdd, and ram. So I took a charging port from another laptop with dead motherboard took off the plug head and plug in the 4 black and red cable individually into the socket, pop in 6gb of ram(4gb & 2gb 1600mhz), replaced the thermal paste, pop in 500gb hdd and another 500gb hdd with a caddy and voilà! Runs AC:Rogue on 50fps at 800x600 low

I love the video, but windows 7 is almost out of date so I mean if someone was going to use it as their new machine, I would’ve loved to see some tests with windows 10. But I love this concept and great video!

Maybe try gluing the plastic with Unibond Repair Extreme all purpose glue? I find it's good for many jobs and it's a flexible glue.

Because of Windows 7 end of support in 2020, and slow performance with Windows 10, you should try Windows 8.1 😇
Loved your video, thanks for your work !

Nice, if slightly gaudy, recycling. Just one point; when reinforcing anything broken, be careful where the load gets transferred. Try to avoid stress concentrations, or you'll just have cracks in different places.

I found your videos just recently. I wish I was able to get my laptop upgraded like what you are doing here. I just can not afford it at all. I am on a very very limited income. I would love to make my laptop do more for some more gaming then what I can do now.

ermmm the painting it's awesome but let's talk about the speaker grill, which obviously has been covered by the paint, and which will eventually muffle the sound

I picked up one that looks almost exactly the same apart from having no GPU and a faulty intel i5 for only $35 with a busted screen that wouldn't power on. Now that I have finished working on it, it has a matte screen, an i7-4700HQ, 8Gb of ram, a 60Gb SSD for the OS and a 500Gb HD for data. I really wish it had a GPU but it makes a good work laptop with a passmark of almost 9000. The battery only had 12% wear too. I don't like the keyboards on these though, it flexes too much :/

Good video. Ever thought about using Linux? Some distros like Linux Mint would run pretty smooth on laptops like this one.
