How to fix fan blade alignment

  • When the outdoor fan or condenser fan blades are out of alignment, the fan vibrates like it is out of balance. I explore ways to repair this.
    This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
    If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

    Who'd have thought a 9 year old video would be the answer to me stopping my AC unit from flying apart.

    Just had our roof replaced and they replaced the attic roof fan. (old one had a seized motor). Hooked up power it today and it's a rockin' and a rollin'. Saw this video and went back up and checked the blades - yep - 2 were "bent" out of place, it's a 6 blade fan. Tweaked them a bit and got it 50% better. Will go back when it's not 100+ up there. Appreciate you passing on your knowledge Gary.

    Ah memories. I used to work on helicopters. Out of track or wrong pitch angle will cause the same vibration. Enstrom Helicopter was chasing after a vibration problem, they even recommended using the same manufacturer for each blade (Alcoa/Reynolds) because they thought the spars might have different flexibility even tho the material spec was the same.

    You gave me an idea how to find a bent brass blade on an antique (1914) desk fan I am working on. It was not out by much but you could see some back and forth motion when the fan was running. I put a pencil in a vise length wise with the eraser sticking out. With the blade mounted on the motor I backed up the fan until the edge of the blade just barely cleared the eraser. I turned the blade by hand and one of the blades did not clear the eraser. On the first try bending it forward (those old brass blades are tough) I got it over 90% corrected and the difference is very noticeable. I know better than to press my luck so at that point I left it alone and unless you look very closely you can't tell the blade isn't 100% perfect. It is so close I'll bet that no one but me will be able to tell. Thanks very much.

    Just tweaked one blade on the 5 blade stamped aluminum 'air drive' fan for my natural gas garage heater. It's way quieter now. Hopefully the imbalance didn't mess up the motor bearings already. This is the 2nd time in 2 years I've had a blade warp on its own. I've replaced the motor once and fan once. 11 year old heater. Thanks for sharing your experience

    I don't recommend specific brands, so I can't help there. Replacement of the blade is probably the only option here. Window shakers are sold on price in most cases, so cheap is what you get.

    You can bend all the blade down very aggressive (not a little) and it will almost double the cfm. Did it to my 15" solar fan rpm still the same. And quiet no sound at all.

    What about a Window A/c unit. I have a 2013 LG- I have gone through 3 of these models and they all have had fan issues.Warrently? Well it's only as good as the service guy who NEVER shows up so figured I was on my own. Mine has a broken blade, so I mesured it and got 23.20 grams. Added that weight in in quarters attached with expoxy and fiberglass. Still vibs and noticed I still have one blade almost directly opposite that is heavy. Still trying . If I fail what is good 8k unit that is realible

    In my case I just had to shut the unit off for a couple hours, let it drain. Guess it was working to hard and built ice up inside?

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were building up ice on the indoor coil, you still have the problem. There are several reasons for this.
      low air flow from plugged filter, coil or ductwork problem.
      Low refrigerant charge in the A/C.
      Temp setting too low (below 70F).

    Thanks for the video. I just replaced my motor and unit is wobbling pretty hard. Didn't exactly run buttery smooth before changing the motor but seems noticeably worse now.
    Have you ever seen anyone bend a shaft by overtightening a set-screw?
    Is an aftermarket fan ok for replacement?

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty hard to bend that shaft. I am not a fan of aftermarket fan blades. I would use an OEM if it is available.

    • @marshallcurtis3251

      So would I. Once that motor shaft is bent out of alignment by warped blades, it can eventually lead to overheating, and subsequently a fire.
