Definitely a great sounding small amp. You brought up a good point Kris; playing guitar for the love of it is enough for most of us, might as well get a good sound out of it.
Hi Kris! Always love your charming in depth-reviews. You nailed it! I ordered my Single Six with a slightly bigger Dumble-Style-Housing, a Celestion Alnico Gold Speaker and a KT66 power tube. It's a killer amp for playing live. Even with a rockband on larger stages.
I built a tweed champ/princeton circuit with marshall tone stack and raw switch. I also added a negative feedback pot ranging from 5k to 100k. .. The nfb pot can get you anywhere from JTM to tweed territory with a quick turn of a knob. The raw switch deletes the tone stack and acts as a tweed boost , which is essentially the difference between the champ and princeton. . That and the nfb work wonderfully together. The black heart little giant is the perfect donor amp for this type of conversion.
I have an Emery Super Baby head made by Curt Emery in the Bat Area. It is a single ended amp that will take power tubes from 6V6's to 6550's and is surprising loud for what it is. Curt believes that simple circuits make for the best tone, and he is certainly right in this case; this amp having only a tone and volume control. It is the perfect bedroom amp, producing beautiful power tube distortion at bedroom volume. It just oozes beautiful harmonics.
Totally agree with you. The art in high-end amps is not "what else can I put in", but "what else can I leave out?". The perfect circuit is not when you can't put any more things in, but when you cannot leave anything more out. Then you have the purest circuit where every component has a influence on the Tone.
I bet the Tone King Gremlin cannot compete with this amp. I am in general not a friend of what comes from Boutique Amp Distribution. Just look at their factory tours on TH-cam. Such a messy plant cannot produce quality their price level is suggesting. Had ones a Tone King Imperial MKII in my studio. What a noisy amp that was, especially with reverb on - poor design. Would keep my hands off from these … … and their Iron Man attenuator is largely overrated.
@@Michael-bm8hi wow… that’s a lot of amps out of the equation: Friedman, Synergy, Morgan, Tone King, Soldano,… and also Wampler pedals. What i know is that i’ve played my friend’s Gremlin and it sounded great 🙂
@@martiboucat Maybe that is exactly the reason why I have no trust in the BAD stuff. The Tone King of today has nothing to do with the Tone King from Mark Barthel. Same with Morgan and the others.
@@Michael-bm8hi So what would suggest then? I mean, if you look all Utube rants, basically everybody has his word saying everything is just garbage at one point.. @@rodolpheponthus2948 The amp line up from John Suhr offers pretty much every sound there is and is to my experience of superb quality. I would also assume that PRS is of very good quality (and not as costly as Suhr).
@@KrisBarocsithe absolute mind blowing thing is, that not only it sounds rich at low volume, but it also takes pedals exceptionaly well at those settings.
I've got one of these old French "PA" tube amp, a Bouyer ST30 and I've played an ST20 too. They do sound amazing, purest clean to roaring pushed overdrive that would cut through any mix !
Curious the difference of the mood dial vs something like an attenuator .. I'm currently assembling parts to make a cheap attenuator for my traynor 40W tube amp to be able to push the tubes further in my livingroom without the risk of divorce .. so seeing amps with these kinds of things that allow the tubes to keep driving piques my current interest. Love the small watt tube amps! Nice piece of history with the French PA.
You cannot compare the "Mood" control to an attenuator. The purpose of an attenuator is to reduce the volume of an amp, while the Mood-Control mainly influences how the amp reacts to your playing and changes the "feel" for you. "Wild" is more aggressive and fast with a lot of transients, while "Mild" feels more controlled and kind of "sticky" as you know it from good Fender Amps.
Okay, I agree. The title is very youtubey. 😅 Truth be told, even most small tube amps sound much better when cranked to a point that’s not usable at home. Even 5w amps, at least most of them. Also, many have small speakers or a small size that sounds treble heavy and small. This one was built for low volumes and on top of that it sounds sweet when cranked. That’s a unique approach, at least that’s how I see it. Cheers
I think the "Mood" is slightly different to the "Presence" knob in the Skylark. Both are located in the power amp. But "Presence" will more affect the treble range of the amp, while "Mood" will generally affect the response and feel of the amp from being more "spongy" to being more "aggressive" with fast reponse.
Oh, Oh it can be so easy - need to put my pedals in front and enjoy it - ah... at home it´s a pleasure and then just going out on the stage - nothing more - Love the TWS Stuff ... too much
Én beszereztem az Amplitube 5 maxot és a Tonex maxot, én úgy érzem azt nem nagyon lehet überelni, max a pszichés hatást, hogy valódi erősítőn játszol 😊
Sum up your component prices... calcualte your time to built it up to highest standards... give dealers a margin that they can live on. So, what would be your price on an amp like this?
Ridiculous price for that... unless built by 16 years old virgins under a full moon of Kentucky... boah... Für den Preis (2.750€) will ich einen 24 Karat hartvergoldeten Speaker-Grill und eine Bespannung des Chassis mit 3-fach vegan gegerbtem Froschvotzenleder...
It's stupid to make such an amplifier, it has 5w, which is unusable for live and especially expensive, and for practice, something cheap, e.g. Blackstar Fly, is enough, but that's just my personal opinion! No one will buy it!
Actually it's one of the best-sellers of TWS. Don't underestimate the number of guitar players that mainly play at home and want a great amp exactly for that situation. They're fed up that most manufacturers leave them alone with "practice amps". That's exactly the reason why e.g. Tone King offers the "Gremlin".
You can gig with 5 watts just depends on size of room or availability to go direct to PA…the only thing that’s upsetting is the price tag not many will be able to afford that especially in todays inflated economy… still want one just the same 🎸 Stephen P

When Kris plays one of my amps, it's always like "Wooooow". So blessed to hear a great player like Kris getting fantastic Tones with it.

Apparently yes. 😆 Good old times where every amp was a tube amp. 🙌
