There’s a lot in North London, all the different groups of people in the film are too so it’s very accurate in that sense, at least when this film came out 20 years ago. It's funny how as a footballer Vinnie Jones was so completely insane, that he actually had to tone it down to play Bullet-Tooth Tony. Which was only his 2nd role in acting, barely a year after retiring from football. How did he pull it off? Simply, he's playing a subdued version of himself. I sometimes wonder if he was even aware they were filming him.

There's a video on TH-cam where Guy Ritchie talks about Snatch after rewatching it for the first time in 20 years or something. It's very interesting and he mentions that Brad Pitt worked with dialect coaches and tried hard to get an authentic accent but was never happy with it. It got to the point Richie did for him what he thought it should sound like for Pitt after which Pitt was ready to just back out and let Richie do it. Richie told him to just have fun with it rather than worrying about making it accurate and that go them to a version they were both happy with. The executives however complained that they have Brad Pitt in the film but no one can understand a word he says.

Re: the fight. As far as I know, they bet on _when_ the match is over. Mickey is so good that the obvious choice is to bet that he wins in the first round, but that's such a popular choice that you barely win anything. But when they fix the fight, they want something that THEY bet on but few others do. So they win the most. And probably few, if anyone else, bet on Mickey winning in the fourth round, so he probably won quite a bit.
Guy Ritchie has definitely had a weird career. I didn't enjoy the movie as much as I did 20 years ago but your energy was invigorating, so thanks!

Someone has probably already said this, but for Cockney rhyming slang, you take the word you want to replace. Then take a two word phrase where the second word rhymes with your original word. Finally, you take the first word, and that is your new word.
My favorite example: you want a word for a “fart”. This rhymes with the last word of “raspberry tart”. So now you take the first word and you get “raspberry”. That is why when you blow with your lips to make a farting noise, it’s called a raspberry.

in the original dvd commentary i swear they said jason statham was from austria and they were so impressed he took on the english accent so well (looking back, obviously they were joking to fill up the commentary track). i held on to this as a fact for over a decade until someone challenged me on it. she made a bet with me, if i was right she'd do... mouth stuff, if she was right i'd make her a seafood risotto. in the end both things happened. she played me like a fiddle. mad respect.

Please please please, add the 1994 comedy Clerks to a poll. Written/Directed/Starring Kevin Smith.
Some of us cannot afford patreon. I have no immune system and am on social security. Before I was diagnosed, I would enjoy watching movies with friends who had never seen the movies I would bring because I loved seeing their reactions so much. Post-pandemic, i no longer have any friends and rarely do I ever leave my apartment. I don’t know why I’m telling y’all this. Just, please add Clerks to a poll.

Yeah, that's pretty universal slang in English-speaking countries. Although I don't hear it as much as I used to decades ago. Maybe its use is waning in the U.S. Or maybe I don't encounter snatch as much because I'm married.

Fun Fact : There are two reasons for Brad Pitt's character accent
    1) Brad Pitt couldn't speak in a believable cockney accent
    2) The whole Mickey accent is a jab at film critics that said that they could not understand the accents in his previous film "Lock & Stock"

20:17 "He's terrifying." I agree. I think Bricktop is one of the scariest villains on film. By the way, fun fact: Alan Ford, the actor, was the voice of Roosta in the original radio series of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm something of a superfan of that, and when I saw this film I recognised his voice instantly. :)

Most people are probably going to bring up Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels as it is most similar to Snatch, but another really great Guy Ritchie movie you should watch is The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Armie Hammer has become persona non grata in Hollywood for justified reasons but the movie is an absolute delight.
The producer of this movie, Matthew Vaughn, went on to direct Kingsman: The Secret Service, but before that he did a movie that was in this kind of vein (albeit a bit more complex) called Layer Cake, which is also good.
If you're getting into British crime films in general, I would also highly, HIGHLY recommend Trainspotting and its sequel T2 Trainspotting, as well as the intense thriller Sexy Beast.

You guys will now be ready to view on YT a short of D@rt4 VaDe3 clips re-dubbed with Bricktop quotes. Hilarious - Bricktop Wars (unless it's been taken down again!). Bullet-tooth Tony is played by Vinnie Jones - an ex-Soccer player with a reputation for violent play as big as Bricktop - typecasting in a nutshell. But brilliant all the same.

George is right, Pikeys is basically a slang word used in England for Irish 'travelers'. They're actually different from gypsies that are more eastern European but they are nomadic and travel on the road from place to place without settling permanently anywhere (hence the name travelers, by which they are known in Ireland). Incidentally, Mickey's mother was played by a well-known Irish actress named Sorcha Cusack who comes from a well-known Irish family of actors. Her sister, Sinead Cusack (also an actress) is married to actor Jeremy Irons.

You guys should watch "Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels", one of Guy Richie's first films. In many ways, Snatch is a spiritual successor to Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels, in that they both have many of the same actors like Jason Stathem, Vinnie Jones, Alan Ford (Bricktop), and that they are both crime comedy films with similar style story telling.

  • @out6of6my6mind
    @out6of6my6mind 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ireland here. Brad Pitt's accent is meant to be an Irish traveller accent. It's not exactly correct but it's as difficult to understand as a lot of real traveller accents, so the vibe works. The fact that his accent isn't 100% authentic sounding could be explained away by the fact that him and his family live in the UK so it could just be muddled.

  • @kevinsieg2076

Snatch is Guy Ritchie's 2nd film, after1998's Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Ritchie's reputation is built on very stylish crime comedies like Revolver, Rockarolla, and most recently 2019's The Gentlemen. Another very entertaining video, and yes, that was Madonna.
