  • An introduction to golf architecture's version of a roller coaster: the Biarritz. One of Golden Age architect C. B. Macdonald's ideal holes, the Biarritz involves a long shot to a large, distinctively contoured green.

This is such a great concept for a green. I love old courses that have features like this.

Phenomenal, and as always my only negative note is that these are so short! The first Biarritz hole I knowingly played was at Old Mac (named "Biarritz" of course) and I loved how much it made me have to think about my shot instead of just trying to flag it. Great job!

Two wonderful Biarritz holes are the 8th at Whipporwill GC in Westchester (Charlie Banks) and the 17th at Westhampton GC on Long Island NY (Raynor). These templates are always fun.

The Greenbrier Old white course has a great example of this kind of hole

McDonald designed the Old White. The hole is around 210 from the back tees and I have tried both high and low shots. The low runner is by far more reliable to access the back pin locations.

I work at Chicago GC (as a greenskeeper) and often see members play it as a runner....paying homage to the design and playing it as designed.

This reinforces my belief that the Biarritz at Old Mac is flawed. It only tips out at about 200 yards, plays 30-40 feet down hill, and most of the time it’s downwind. Effectively it plays 180 at its longest and your ball is already coming in high. I loved pretty much the rest of that golf course but I was puzzled by the Biarritz because it seemed squeezed in and forced.

Hadn’t ever thought of it this way, but you make a good point. Seems counterintuitive to the spirit of the design

I really am enjoying your videos but your references to "pins" is cringe worthy.
Hole locations will further increase you reputation and territory. Thank you for providing these videos.
