It’s creepy ngl. Genshin touches on dark topics but the gameplay in open world is rather chill. It’s reminiscent of mining in a cave in Minecraft as a kid and hearing those ungodly cave noises.

He does play the flute, actually. The books that you can collect confirms this. The books say that at night you can hear the vigilant yaksha play the flute, and Xiao's other title (besides conquerer of demons) is the vigilant yaksha. Now, this is just my fan theory, but I like to think the reason why Xiao learned to play the flute is because he was saved by the sound of one. So to try and quell his karma he learned how to play the flute.
