He sings tenor, eats a drum set for breakfast every day, plays piano, cello, and saxophone, graduated from yale premed, and speaks fluent mandarin, plus I think, 5 other languages. Mitch is a very, very rare counter tenor. Which is how he hits those notes. Both he and Kirstie can sing whistle notes. He does sing to accompanying music, he plays the piano, and sounds gorgeous. Crazy talented. Kirstie is a mezzo soprano. Her range is awesome. And with her confidence growing, she's been stepping up more. Scott is a baritone, also with a huge range. If you ever react to the grinch song, he covers the bass, but can also hit into the tenor range.

I believe Kevin was putting his cello away at the beginning of the song, so Avi was doing an opera song that was not part of the Aha song until I believe kevin got back

Part of what you're hearing as distortion with Avi is his use of overtones - 2 notes at the same time! Not many can do that! And hard to pick up cleanly on a phone recording! But totally amazing! 💕

I heard some stuff done by Scott & Mitch when they were Sophomores in high school! One was a dramatic solo with Mitch and then a song they both wrote together done as a duet! They were MAGNIFICENT way back then! Geezo! 😳
ok the reason why this one is better is because it is live and a lot of people think pentatonix cheat in the studio, but this is proof that they can do it just as good, if not even better live. you guys are saying it sounds super similar but that's the whole point, also mitch's charismatic facial expressions are amazing.

Great reaction! As other might have mentioned, in the prior song, Kevin was sitting and playing cello in the middle of the stage. He went off to put the cello away while they sang the opening part. Mitch moved to center stage, Scott followed, and Kevin came onstage next to Scott, and was there for all of Aha! No one on earth could do all the crazy beats and wooshes and rattles he put out here!

Avi is a classically trained "basso profundo", the lowest of the bass ranges. Unlike many super low basses, Avi has a beautiful singing voice, and has a wider range. Matt (who replaced Avi) is a standard bass. Scott is a baritone, but he also has a phenomenal range, and can replace the bass (except for the lowest of Avi's notes), which he does when the bass is singing lead.

Yeah, part of the audio issues were the recording device, and part were that Avi did indeed blow out part of the sound system with his first deep slide. But the showmanship in this performance more than makes up for it. Thanks for giving us this one too!

Here's the story as I've heard it: the previous song was a Kevin cello solo and the others were backstage taking a break. Mitch was suffering from jet lag and drank two Red Bulls while on the break. As Kevin went backstage to put the cello away, the other four came back onstage and started singing a choral intro that didn't involve Kevin. Kevin returned to the stage (not seen on camera) just as Avi hit that low note that damaged one of the Star Vista speakers. Then Mitch's Red Bulls kicked in, and he proceeded to go completely insane on stage while Avi continued to joyously shred the sound system in the background! And we are left with this, the live performance that most Pentaholics consider the best of the group's career. And it's made even more legendary because it was apparently only captured in this fan video!!

This version is a "must see" for any Pentaholic fan. Yes, the audio is not very good quality but it is much more about Mitch's performance in particular for that show. You can totally see how he was really feeling that performance! Sometimes certain shows/audiences just bring out the best in a performer. In this performance, Mitch really, really shines.
The voice is the voice no matter what is backing it. But you can hear the voice better when there isn't a band potentially drowning them out. Mitch could do exactly this with a full orchestra or a giant metal band behind him. As long as the sound engineers have the microphone balanced properly you'd be able to hear him just as well as you do when he solos completely alone, or with Pentatonix.
Did you know that they sing in Japanese too with one of the most famous vocal groups in Japan? No? Then check them out "Little Glee Monster feat. Pentatonix - Dear My Friend"👌
You guys are really original and funny! It's my third video i've been watching and I love it! Love your format and you're doing great interventions! You have great chemistry together. next suggestion will be '' New Rule/ Are you that somebody'' This group has the best mash-up songs ever. They have this ability to mix songs together and create a whole new song. Very impressive. About Avi, yes him and Matt are different, but the group dynamic is better with Matt, not that Avi wasn't dynamic but it's noticeable in their live performances, they have more fun with Matt around. But Avi is greatly missed too, he brought A LOT to the group. Just my opinion ;) New subscriber for sure!

I'm really glad you reacted to both. This performance is great and a MUST see, but I prefer the official video. If you are more into the performance aspect of the song this is probably your favorite of the 2, if you are more interested in hearing the lyrics of the song then the official video is probably your favorite.
If you want a really good live video you should check out their 2016 Popspring performance. It was recorded by/for MTV so the video and audio quality is top-notch. You really should check out THE FIRST TAKE channel. The channel concept is that every invited singer is given one chance to do a live recording. Success or not depends on them. Unedited raw voice and only the first take counts. I agree the sound quality is not as good. This video definitely shows Mitch's vocal control and range much better. It also shows Avi off. A lot of their issue is that most sound engineers aren't knowledgeable about acappella so they don't use the right equipment and settings. They underestimate Avi and then he blows the speakers as a result. They had to start working with a crew that knew what they needed. Seems like you got a few comments on this 🙂 oh well it happens. Funny intro. Nice you all had a sense of humor about it. I won't be around much more. Hanging with Avi's stuff instead of PTX takes me back to college days with folk music and well Avi's voice of course all about that bass. Actually Avi only broke the sound system once and that was with a school's equipment. His voice was used as a sound effect on one song Natural Disaster (which they are having Matt do now that he has practiced enough to get down that low at a couple of years) but that was planned out and it did not actually break anything. They had to get "bass capable" equipment which a cappella bands have to have all the time because of their bass singers. These are the videos and they are fairly funny. Lousy quality but still. Kevin chasing Avi off the stage is fun in that clip after it gets pointed at the stage again. Tim Foust does this every once in awhile and they play with it in his band Homefree. The intro is to give Kevin time to put his cello away from the previous song. It seems AVI blew a speaker because his lows are distorted for the rest of the song. I like both the official and this one. The official one lets you hear all the intricate vocals we can’t really hear well here on this one. It is from a cell phone and in the audience... the official doesn’t have the intro though.

That being said, you should go check out Mitch & Scott’s Superfruit account, and react to their song “The Promise”, which is an 80’s cover...with music. Also, PTX’s version of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”. Absolutely breathtaking.
I agree with you on this. Although Mitch is definitely in his element on this one (and probably they all are), the audio and even the video are not as good quality as the other one and there's yet another I've seen that I thought was better.

Yeah, part of the audio issues were the recording device, and part were that Avi did indeed blow out part of the sound system with his first deep slide. But the showmanship in this performance more than makes up for it. Thanks for giving us this one too!

Here's the story as I've heard it: the previous song was a Kevin cello solo and the others were backstage taking a break. Mitch was suffering from jet lag and drank two Red Bulls while on the break. As Kevin went backstage to put the cello away, the other four came back onstage and started singing a choral intro that didn't involve Kevin. Kevin returned to the stage (not seen on camera) just as Avi hit that low note that damaged one of the Star Vista speakers. Then Mitch's Red Bulls kicked in, and he proceeded to go completely insane on stage while Avi continued to joyously shred the sound system in the background! And we are left with this, the live performance that most Pentaholics consider the best of the group's career. And it's made even more legendary because it was apparently only captured in this fan video!!

This version is a "must see" for any Pentaholic fan. Yes, the audio is not very good quality but it is much more about Mitch's performance in particular for that show. You can totally see how he was really feeling that performance! Sometimes certain shows/audiences just bring out the best in a performer. In this performance, Mitch really, really shines.

The voice is the voice no matter what is backing it. But you can hear the voice better when there isn't a band potentially drowning them out. Mitch could do exactly this with a full orchestra or a giant metal band behind him. As long as the sound engineers have the microphone balanced properly you'd be able to hear him just as well as you do when he solos completely alone, or with Pentatonix.

You have great chemistry together. next suggestion will be '' New Rule/ Are you that somebody'' This group has the best mash-up songs ever. They have this ability to mix songs together and create a whole new song. Very impressive.
About Avi, yes him and Matt are different, but the group dynamic is better with Matt, not that Avi wasn't dynamic but it's noticeable in their live performances, they have more fun with Matt around. But Avi is greatly missed too, he brought A LOT to the group. Just my opinion ;)

I'm really glad you reacted to both. This performance is great and a MUST see, but I prefer the official video. If you are more into the performance aspect of the song this is probably your favorite of the 2, if you are more interested in hearing the lyrics of the song then the official video is probably your favorite.

If you want a really good live video you should check out their 2016 Popspring performance. It was recorded by/for MTV so the video and audio quality is top-notch. I agree the sound quality is not as good. This video definitely shows Mitch's vocal control and range much better. It also shows Avi off. A lot of their issue is that most sound engineers aren't knowledgeable about acappella so they don't use the right equipment and settings. They underestimate Avi and then he blows the speakers as a result. They had to start working with a crew that knew what they needed.

I won't be around much more. Hanging with Avi's stuff instead of PTX takes me back to college days with folk music and well Avi's voice of course all about that bass.
Actually Avi only broke the sound system once and that was with a school's equipment. His voice was used as a sound effect on one song Natural Disaster (which they are having Matt do now that he has practiced enough to get down that low at a couple of years) but that was planned out and it did not actually break anything. They had to get "bass capable" equipment which a cappella bands have to have all the time because of their bass singers. These are the videos and they are fairly funny. Lousy quality but still. Kevin chasing Avi off the stage is fun in that clip after it gets pointed at the stage again.
Tim Foust does this every once in awhile and they play with it in his band Homefree. It takes their bass proofed speakers a little while to recover.

The intro is to give Kevin time to put his cello away from the previous song. It seems AVI blew a speaker because his lows are distorted for the rest of the song.
I like both the official and this one. The official one lets you hear all the intricate vocals we can’t really hear well here on this one. It is from a cell phone and in the audience... the official doesn’t have the intro though.

I agree with you on this. Although Mitch is definitely in his element on this one (and probably they all are), the audio and even the video are not as good quality as the other one and there's yet another I've seen that I thought was better.
