I was in MO and my voltage regulator was going out, right across the road where I was at was a shop that I called and they said bring in! I did, and when I go inside I always take in registration because when I hit the deer the door was replaced! The guy told me he didn't need no paperwork, they'll get all the information themselves!! Ok, less then 2 hrs later I'm back on the road, and 5 hrs later, I'm sitting in the parking lot with problems again!! Across the road is a Chevy place with a shop, and went there next morning!! When I took the paperwork inside with me, gave all my information, and even had the repair paperwork too! He said thank you and took all of it!! 10 minutes later he comes to me and says, well found the problem, the last place put a voltage regulator for a 1500 and even your paperwork and vin# clearly says 2500, but they went by the door that was replaced and didn't match anything!! They had to order my part, and because I live in that van, got me into the little motel across the road and even took me!! And when I picked up the van, they had taken my black gorilla tape and covered up the information on the door!! Plus they also contacted the place that had put the wrong regulator in and got them to refund most of that to my boss!! That place went above and beyond to help me!!
First of all Matty, stay away from Pep boys! I had a service guy there try to get the key out of my old Vette which required it to be shifted into reverse to pull the key. He tried to break off the key I was watching from the parking lot and had to intervene, WTF !!! And you are absolutely correct, No One Cares About Anything Anymore!
Vanlife maintenance is always a trip! Better to replace the belts then get stuck on the side of the road. Plus now you got a spare! Same thing I did. Great videos and happy Travels Matty! 🤙🏾
“11 minutes of watching my engine … don’t blame you if you left.” Somehow, I listened to it all, intently. And I don’t know diddly about engines. You tell a good story. That’s why we keep coming back and smashing that bell. You got a good attitude, too. Thanks.
I had my own business for 30 years then closed it and went to work at UPS, (needed insurance mainly). I enjoy meeting and working with so many different aged people and listening to their stories. I can say with all my years of experience, which they have little idea I have, (I'm just another line worker to them). It is VERY RARE to find someone with pride in doing a good job. It's always the company against the worker or the system is rigged. Now and then however, I come across someone young in their 20s and no matter what others say in a negative tone, that person still does their best on the job. I believe, it is who you are...pride in doing a good job seems more to be a personality trait than something taught at work. And as expected...those with this good work ethic always move onto better jobs while those who complain are still there complaining.
ASE certified mechanic here. Before we even knew there was a tool for the Stretch belts we were using a cut piece of a windshield washer jug just to protect the belt. It’s pretty easy to put those belts on if you have a ratchet and socket that will fit the crank pulley main bolt. Just slowly roll the engine over rolling the belt into place. I still have never purchased one of the tools. I’ve also had mechanics in the shop that did work like that. They usually didn’t last more than two days.
Exactly why I drive 45 minutes to my mechanic, north of Columbus. Their not teaching them anything. All they know is hooking the vehicle up to a computer and following the prompts. True mechanics are a dying breed.
Good grief!! Can’t anyone do a decent job these days? A lot of people are just slackers! So frustrating. You’re lucky that parts weren’t falling out of your van on the road on your way home! Good thing you checked it out before you left!
Good video. I'd send Corporate an official complaint. At least it would identify a problem and maybe get a refund of some type. If they give you a store credit or gift card, use it for product not service. LOL
They should have called you to let you know that they can only do partial work on your car. Some Mechanics be tripping, smh. Maybe they could but wanted to do easy work and get paid then move on to next car
Also I had a blower motor start to make an awful noise so I purchased one of those as well. 5 minute job to pull that motor out…. but come to find out I just had a couple dried leaves stuck up against the fan blades. Cleaned that out and all was good. Gotta love our GM vans for being a easy rig to work on…. Not like those “sprinters”
Yeah I had a squeaky serpentine belt just after getting on the road in Montana…ended up stopping at a AutoZone and replacing the belt right there in the parking lot. Hardest part was getting the belt routed around the correct way. I had Kari’s van for reference so that wasn’t even a big deal.
I'm so thankful for my mechanic. He's the best and doesn't rape my wallet. We always discuss options and time-frames. I've always paid him right at time of pick-up and even added a little extra from time to time.
You make tinkering on your vehicle engine, which I know absolutely nothing about, interesting. 😀 You are so right about quality and pride in one’s work. Sure not like it used to be!
Sadly you paid for a good lesson that you really already knew if you want it done right do it yourself! Unfortunately their are old ladies like me that can't do even a simple oil change at 73 only because I wouldn't be able to get backup😅.. I worry about this woek ethic I'm seeing today . You're right there are a few out there that are good but good luck finding them. So word of mouth is going to have to be our saving grace. Thanks for sharing because I thought it was only me that got this below part treatment
I’m in New England and every time I take a vehicle to a mechanic here they want to do more than I ask for. I worked 45 years in industrial maintenance from a machinist to a manager. It infuriates me when they tell me I need something I know I don’t need. It’s all about the money for them. I’m sorry you got stuck with a poor mechanic Marty.
Amen brother. I am west of you in the next State. Getting auto work done is pathetic at best. Our problem is that no one wants to work and those who do want to work have trouble passing the drug test. I finally found a shop, however, that is fairly close to the way it was in the old days. Recently, however, they replaced a window electric motor and now my radio doesn't work. I will take it back to have that corrected in a few days because I need them to do some additional work for me. My Dad worked as a mechanic for 36 years and back then there were no do-overs. It was done right the first time. Not no more however, now it's a crap shoot.
Dang, Dude; thats awful!! I ve run into some shady poor work n have had to pay to have the work done again n its not just costly but frustrating. I m learning how to do more n more due to those experiences n still nit wanting that education😂 I know YOU can do it❤❤❤❤❤❤
alignments and tires are the only things i cant do myself. ive had to learn it all over the years. mostly due to being poor my whole life, lol. when in doubt youtube it
This is why as a nomad, it is extremely important to plan down time to have your vehicle serviced. Imagine that shoddy work, then subsequent wire harness damage somewhere out of town. Did you photo the knucklehead evidence before fixing it correctly? As minimal, I would craft a good letter with diagram/photo and send to the store manager, and definitely corporate. You must request full restitution. The mechanic may have been rushed, given the task very late. Did not GAF about his boss. You don't know. Advice: sometimes unscrupulous services people will partially complete, hoping that you will return in a few weeks/days for additional more extensive expensive work. Which they of course they did not do because you had the car for many days before returning. Good young mechanics work towards owning their own business. Others are just work for the hour. We have to sort through them.
I'm a pretty good basic mechanic.... TH-cam videos have helped a lot... Just did outer tierods and front brakes today....Total cost with parts from Ebay 50.00.. Its hard to find a good, reasonable mechanic, so learning the repair is quite rewarding, and you gain the knowledge for future repairs....
I was on a long distance trip and stopped in at Midus for oil change. The dude put 1 quart in just enough to get the oil light out. As I am a tech, I decided to check oil level before driving off. Sure enough, no oil on dip stick. called the Fuker back out and he drags the nozzole hose in the dirt to my truck to top it off. Told the as$ wipe to wipe that shit off before pumping oil. After that, lost all trust.
Don't use that 15mm bolt to release tensioner, it will loosen fully before tension is released. There a 3/8 female drive square hole in tensioner arm that is used to release tension...I'm sure there's a YT video on it. 300 bucks for a belt? I'd drive there from Brookhaven and perform the service....I'm surprised a MAF sensor code didn't set...
You can do it Matty! If you have enough mechanical ability to change a regular belt you can change a stretch belt. No special tool needed. I have the tool and never use it, I just use the zip tie method cause it works better for me. You got this!
Its advised to replace most serpentine belts by 100K, you probably could have done the stretch belt too, that lisle tool is only $25. A RWD van Serpentine belt is fairly easy, easier than replacing belts on a FWD vehicle
Wow!!! I'm taking this as a warning to all nontinkering female nomads to have a smart friend to back you up when going into places on the road for repairs😮💨
My my my Mattie. What big problems you have. Your camping videos are so informative & relateable. 12 min of bitching about 2 belts, the people you chose to do the work & 1 minute bitching about poor healthcare for your Dad. Always somebody else’s fault. Thanks Marty. Can’t wait for the next informative Vanlife video. Hope your Dad hangs in there.
Hi Matt....yes that's the way mechanics are here too....charge big dollars but don't get the work done properly..... especially if you are female and don't know what wrong with the vehicle.....I would make him fix it all up while I watched him or tell the owner...manager....his shoddy work ethics..... . take care...... Deborah 🇨🇦

This technician could cause someone to be injured or killed if he is this negligent. Perhaps you could give some thought to not letting it go and bringing this to the manager or owner of the business. Some things just aren't acceptable. 😢

Its scary taking your car in anywhere nowadays.
So frustrating when you get your car back from the shop and things are out of order this is why TH-cam is my best friend lately

You are smart to replace your belts.
Wow! You aren't the only one whose had bad mechanic issues. Good grief! Glad YOU knew what needed to be done.❤

File a complaint with the manager at the place.

You hit the nail on the head! If you want something done right, do it yourself!
I have 2014 GMC Savana with 123K. Never changed any belts.😮
Service is a thing of the past

You are right about GM vans being easier to work on than sprinters!! I love my 2019 Express 3500!!
I only let myself work on my cars. All mine are from the 90s 4 cars all paid for and registered daily drivers. Two jeep cherokees

I made a tool out of an empty laundry detergent jug. Been using it for a long time now.
❤ Thank you. Cause we don't always know to double check.

I have been buying special tools to do a job as such. It is paying for itself in the long run. And often it cost much less than them foing the job.

"I'm gonna try to just let this go" ... Yup, just let it go, Matty.
This is why as a nomad, it is extremely important to plan down time to have your vehicle serviced.

Good young mechanics work towards owning their own business. Others are just work for the hour. We have to sort through them.
Now you know why I do my own repairs and maintenance.
I will hold your beer you got this
Certified! Certifie this !!!
Good to know.😊

It is so hard to find a mechanic that can be trusted and relied on. I didn't know there is a stretch belt tool.
I was on a long distance trip and stopped in at Midus for oil change. The dude put 1 quart in just enough to get the oil light out. As I am a tech, I decided to check oil level before driving off. That's over the top 11:21 I have bought a few special tools , mostly for the weird clips on cars etc
Pep Boy hired inexperience mechanics.
New mechanics straight out of school.
You really should leave a review of the company. You should let potential customers aware of what you went through.

Best mechanics for a vehicle is one, who is certified by the maker of the vehicle.
If it ain't broken, there's no need to mess with it.

If you are near cbus again. I can give you the name of my mechanic. He lives to keep older vehicles running. I have a 2005 Ford E150 Econoline.
I identify as an auto-mechanic... I'll head out to PepBoys to get my DEI job destroying other peoples cars.
Wow!!! I'm taking this as a warning to all nontinkering female nomads to have a smart friend to back you up when going into places on the road for repairs😮💨
That's when you ask Matty and others for references!!

great vid on travels thanks lee
I can do bad all by myself. Sorry you had so much trouble Matty
That guy was worse than the mouse
Enjoyed
It's getting hard to find a good shop. Thankfully I have one where I live.
"...if you're not I don't blame ya" 🤣🤣
Maybe you should have taken it to David Puddy in New York.
Yea, buying the tool is cheaper than having it done. Good idea to carrh extras.
No work ethic is everywhere and in all fields. Nobody wants to work anymore.😊
I tell people all the time about this kind of business. Liars and thieves is what they are!
Apathy...it's called.. DON'T GIVE A SHIT!!
😊😊
Hamburger Mechanics!
You'd think an auto repair shop would have an account with Mac Tools or Snap-On Tools and be able acquire and new or special tools needed.
Hi Matty 😊😊
That's frustrating for sure. Do you dang job people.
Send a little Matty Letter to PepBoys.
I tried to get a u joint put on and they wanted 5o dollars for diagnostic. I didn't want diagnosed I wanted a part swapped. I get it.
Interesting 🧐
I've had trouble with pep boys in tulsa....
Been there DEALERSHIPS Expensive multiple times advance appt’s allowing early morning 1st customer to be service as well as visually checking mid morning then lunch time when will my Van be driven into their Service Bay only to ride their behinds becoming the BAD customer from Advisor; Tech; Mgr; either EOD done or need to make 2nd appt cuz order part; or short handed WTF. Ooof. The hardest thing is letting this sorta thing go. Protect your own mental health. Don't let other people's junk worm into your sanity. (At least you know how to review the mechanics' work and see the potentially dangerous errors!)
I would buy that special tool. That way the tech has no excuse unless he is incompetent.
$ 286. 😮 shocked for a belt. Wait let me get up. I'm a little out of touch. Now I know what my father meant when he said my grandfather had outlived his times
The decision to let go is yours to make...however, think about how dangerous this could be for a customer who isn't as smart as you are. This technician could cause someone to be injured or killed if he is this negligent. Perhaps you could give some thought to not letting it go and bringing this to the manager or owner of the business. Some things just aren't acceptable. 😢
Pep Boys would be wise to complete the original job, as bid and no charge!
I simply will not support them as a company until I see your video showing, that did the right thing.
Wow we have the same problem here in California. I think they’re worse No, I know they are.
What's the exact name of the stretch belt tool??😊
Finally a TH-cam video that’s not AI generated and it’s a terrible video.
They should have given your money back
Why I have always done all my own work including transmission work. There is no more mechanics just kids who cheated on exams and bullshitters. Good mechanics left the industry to pursue better things. They paid us peanuts. I now make more money doing less and staying clean of car grease
Unbelievable.
So annoying and what a waste of time and money. Glad you noticed things out of place. Sounds like that guy just rushed through it to go home.
I'm so sorry Matty. They took you for a ride on a bumpy road. My husband was a mechanic for years til he injured his back. He still does some limited work on our own vehicles. There is no excuse for shoddy work, half-assed jobs or price gouging. What is it with inept jerks now? I guess it is the boomer in me showing, but a simple belt replacement should only take 15-20 minutes at a shop, so $280 seems very excessive. As for the other belt, if it was me, I'd just get a spare to have on hand & let it go. You shouldn't need a special tool, just an old school flat blade screwdriver. I'm angry for you. I'd definitely leave a low customer service rating at both the dealership and Pep Boys. There are no excuses for that. Deep breath. Rant over. I hope you & Dad are staying cool & well in this heat. Any plans to add fish to the pond?
Wow, You got ripped off! Don't ever trust these kind of places. They are only there to rip off customers.
I thought a serpentine belt should be good for 200,000-250,000 miles?
I can't afford mechanics do all my own work on cars always have
There’s a theme going on here….first you mention the six inches and now you get screwed. 😂😂😂
🤣
Go to Manager..
You can do that yourself im a truck driver and mecanic self thauth I do it myself
" dealership"
😮
the more you can do for yourself the better your funds stay, more in your bank, sounds like both places were a fail, you can order the belt from the dealership then that is all, just a part. was the work done by pep boys? reason am thinking about taking my car in to them for repairs.
You got effed..bith belts are not a big 4:32 deal
