  • First tree felled with the new MS880. This pine was way more dangerous than previously thought.....
    She split in 3 places before hitting the ground. Keep your eyes up! Stay safe friends... this was a huge learning experience.

    Looking up is extremely important, but I wouldn't use Wranglestar as a source of how to use a chainsaw. He does a lot of things the wrong way. There are great fellers and tree men on TH-cam like August Hunike and Billy Ray Smith, but Wranglerstar doesn't have the experience.

    good morning was watching your 2016 video cutting that old "school marm" tree, looks to me that the saw you used was way to big an 88 is really designed for old growth and very large diamiter tmber, you should have cutoff each leg first then cut off the stump your lucky u didn't get hurt.

    I climbed and fell trees for 2 years, 25 years ago. I’m about to get back into tree work again. But I’m taking an arborist certification course before I put on the first climbing spur or fell a single tree. I was proud to here your humility in recognition of your errors. But please be safe. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

    Please don't take this the wrong way but you showed a lot of bad habits: Letting go of the handle wrap while cutting (cutting with one hand), leaning in the path of the bar while cutting, not keeping your thumb on your left hand wrapped around the handle, holding the chainsaw backwards (around min 5), and falling dangerous trees without knowledge of how to do so. Please please take a class or two on safe chainsaw operation and falling trees. I'd also note not to put to much stock into a lot of "experts" on the internet with folk wisdom that also have a lot of bad habits. Tough words here but only meant to help keep you safe and alive. This could have gone horribly wrong in more ways that you apparently realized-beyond cutting through the hinge etc..

      I was coming down here to basically say the same stuff you guys have. I'm not trying to bash the guy but hes real lucky hes not in a hospital bed somewhere. After the tree dropped he kn ade the comment " that was scary" , yes it was!! It was probly scarier to us watching that know what you were doing wrong and wanted to reach thru the screen and stop ya. I almost had to turn it off cause I did t wanf to see ya get smashed!!
      Listen to some of the comments from these guys buddy and DO NOT watch wranglerstar for tips, comedy only! Hes a joke and hes gonna cause someone to get hurt one day.

      Could you elaborate on leaning in the path of the bar while cutting? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your wording. Is that just in case the chain breaks so you don't catch the chain with your body? I just cut wood for the house but am always looking to learn how to be safe when cutting timber. Thanks for the constructive comment too. There's a lot of bad information on the web.

    I knew it was a possibility that the one back lead was suspect to fall by noticing the vertical crease where it was connected aka the branch union, that's technically a weak spot it's called included or concluded bark, you can notice it at the 7:02 time somewhere in that frame and I noticed his back cut was within the seam, and is exactly why it broke as he continued into the back cut. He simply overlooked this hazard in his initial assessment of this particular tree. We all do this at some time in our profession, but I learned this important issue in training while employed at Bartlett tree experts who have a lot of input in the arborists test study guide, and they also have a lab based in North Carolina that's a super place where they test and experiment any and everything involved in tree work from a safety and equipment to technique perspective. One of the most important and underappreciated rules of thumb is the fact that although felling one should never go it alone especially climbing. It's always good to have at least three people with considerable knowledge of tree removal tasks in which one of the three likely would have saw this dangerous potential failure followed by a reassessment of his removal technique. Taking nothing away from his skill set and experience, just the fact anything can go south even with the best as no two trees are guaranteed to cooperate based on the many unseen issues with trees thus the reason for the not go it alone rule of Bartlett tree. Be safe because this profession is ranked or was recently the number one ranked dangerous profession and rightfully so.

    What you got there is a co-dominate or school marm, safest way to deal with them is to work on individual stems, falling all 3 at once like that well... you saw what happened, anyway don't mean to be a jerk but don't want anyone gettin killed either.

    Good job leaving the saw, I've seen guys stand there and wrestle it until the tree was on the ground and I used to know a gentleman who learned why that was a bad idea. I also love to see guys analyze their stumps when they get the tree down so many guys neglect to learn from every tree and wouldn't have noticed the uneven hinge wood . The only thing I might've done differently is to use a wedge as a gauge instead of the axe, but that's only because I love my axes more than most people lol. You've certainly earned my subscription. Be safe out there.

    I'm not one to ever comment on videos but I feel compelled to as a fellow wildland sawyer and arborist. I know you said you require more practice but view it as an overall safety training scenario. First off you can cut a multiple truck tree as many trees in one. Reason being. You have to notice the included bark on those big branch unions. Immediately as you put in a face cut I said that was to high(given i would have chosen a different falling method). You can see exactly where that tree in the back was joined with the main trunk and obviously you cut above it. Secondly you can see it between both main codominant stems. Not as bad but still there. And come on that tree could be felled with a 361 if handled the right way. Be thoughtful in your size up and consider all of the factors at hand. And dont cut through holding wood!!!!!!!!! You sighted the tree for a reason in the beginning. Use it!!!

    Kyker you cut straight through a major faulted trunk union called an inclusion. You don't have the required Tree assessment skills to be felling this type of tree. You could plainly see the seam of the included branch travelling right through your back cut. That back branch was always going to split off like that. I'm just amazed it didn't sit back hard and jam your bar and chain up until after the fell. Mate I was horrified as soon as the camera walked around the back side of the tree and I could not believe you did not notice the fault line or know what it was.
    Also never ever ever cut through the hinge. Learn how to split level back cut or at least wedge more.

You seem like a smart,capable guy so I have a feeling it has . I don't want to say much , reading some of the comments even my constructive criticism would sound abusive haha . Honestly though , I bet that 880 cut just fast enough to keep you out of trouble . Smaller saw wouldn't have made it through that back lead fast enough , got pinched before you had room for a wedge and you prob still woulda been fighting under it to get the saw out. Hope all is well ,brother .

    PLEASE, two hands on that saw at all times. You reached in to position a wedge, inches from the chain of a running saw-no. Listen to the men on here who know and have seen the results of bad decisions. Any saw is dangerous, you’re working with the nastiest of them all and it takes a split second for disaster to arrive.
    Be careful and keep up the good attitude, learn from those who know what the hell is going on. Felling trees LOOKS easy but it’s anything but......

I see now it was three trees that merged into one bigger tree, I did have a gut feeling the first tree was going to go early just from the intruded bark but I didn't think the other two would have split,, there was not a lot of intruded in them but that's why you look while you cut. And great call in just leaving the saw, they can be replaced good health can't

    Thank your for your video, a good lesson can be learned. IMO, using the Big 880 with tha overly long bar was part of the problem. Your 661 with a 36" bar, or 30" inch bar would allow you to be closer to the tree, having more control over the "angle", both up and down.But I can see what happened...you are under adrenalin cause one limb came crushing down, but you were forced to bring it down then, instead of taking a step back and reconsider. Very dangerous tree, thanks for the upload, stay safe!

    • @bradmetcalf7832
      @bradmetcalf7832 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What does the length of the bar have to do with being "closer to the tree"? I run my saw "buried in the wood" any extra bar is sticking out the other side. I don't understand what you are getting at?

    • @volkerpetersen2268
      @volkerpetersen2268 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do a plunge cut with a 4 feet long bar, you will be 4 feet away from the tree, as you will be at the other end of the saw, trying to balance the the tip steady with a 30lbs monster saw. As the plunge cut is essential to set a correct hinge, short bar and lighter saw will give you better control.

    First don't listen to wranglerstar for a how to on anything. The guy can't even properly use a machete, so you for damned sure don't want to be taking chainsaw lessons from him. Next, drop each limb you can safely cut from the ground and reevaluate the tree after each is down, because it becomes a different tree with each limb you remove. I. E. The balance or lean will be different. Glad you're alright but you had me cringing a couple of times.

    should have treated each stem as a separate tree. thosse seams go right through where you're cutting. could have got killed.

    Did I miss it in the video, but what size bar is on that, the 42"?
    Any idea of total weight with bar, gas, etc...?
    Using your wedge banger as a wedge? Braver than me.... Now you know why it kept setting back on you... glad it didn't get you, that was close.
    Glad you decided to leave the saw and run... ;)
    Bet that got your heart pumping...
    I agree with Luc, a tree like that should have come down in sections. Lesson learned right? Glad it didn't go south on you...
    Be safe, take care!

      Good Day Farm no i don't have my Buckin Special wedge banger yet. I was using a husqvarna (wetterlings) splitting axe.
      It has like a 30-32 inch handle and about 2.5 lb head

      oh i see what your saying, i wasent using the axe as a wedge. using it as a "needle guage". Tarzan Thomas and hotsaws101 use either an axe or long wedge as a "guage". when set in there loosley the axe or wedge starts to move when the tree moves, with the handle length its easy to detect even very small movement of the tree. when the one trunk broke off the back i saw the handle move first before i looked up to see it start to fall.

      It most definitely is a pine. It's dead, more the brown color under the bark that slips easily off the wedge when he pulls it out. Also note the blue wood in the trunk. There was a fire, note charred bark and checked, charred fence post at edge of field, and absolute lack of any ground litter around tree. Hope that helps clear it up for you.

    • @chrissmith2921
      @chrissmith2921 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBrushcutter Pine trees are coniferous. They are needle bearing trees. I didn't see any pine needles. As well soft wood trees rarely grow 2 or 3 at the base.

    There wasn't much more you could have done, the trunk was very compromised by the 3 limbs junction structure, the first one to go is a good indication of what I'm saying, the weight and position of the last 2 large limbs were never allowing both to fall in the same direction as they were forking but in the end, you've got it down without you getting hurt, like you modestly said, with some more experience, these tricky situations become less of a problem as you will know/have a fair idea as to what the tree will do but from where I stand, you have done OK...!
    Cheers

    Sometimes you can tap in the trunk with an axe and detect rot. Sometimes. I could tell from looking at that trunk that it was going to be a sketchy one to fell.

    I would have notched and plunged that first one off. I dropped a mulberry that was very subtly seamed recently, and it broke apart. Very embarassing, as some folks were watching.
    Experience is the best teacher I guess, just wish some of these lessons were less dramatic. :)

    I knew this one was going to be sketchy. All the talk about "she's" a tough tree, my new chainsaw "she's powerful, not cutting down the individual trunks, not leaving a proper hinge, and of course the fact that the tree was rotting...not a lot of smartness going on here.

    I'm sorry to say this b'c I simply try too never speak poorly of other tree feller's or tree climbing arborist's, but this guy seems like he needs some remedial training, in regards to falling multi-lead co-dominant tree's; if I were in his shoe's; firstly I'd probably use a smaller power-saw, secondly I'd clean-up all low lying leads that are 2 1/2ft up from the stump. As you can see from this video the tree wasn't sitting back on his saw; he was simply cutting that lead from the tree and didn't know it, and if he was standing where he was moments prior he most likely wouldn't have caught it on film, falling to the ground, b'c he would have been under it as the lead came to the ground, he's simply just lucky he moved and started cutting from the low side of the tree..
    With that being said, overall I feel as though this was a solid educational video for those striving to become tree falling or climbing arborists.

    NOT a pine tree. Pine are evergreen and keep needles year round. You fell a deciduous tree. They loose their LEAVES every year. The only evergreen that I know to loose it's needles in the winter is the tamarack tree. Comments below are right. Better to be safe and take a danger tree down a little bit at a time.
