Thomas Heatherwick designed the Vessel to "bring people together"

  • Thomas Heatherwick explains his desire for the recently opened Vessel at the Hudson Yards development to become a unique public destination in this video.
Designed by his London practice Heatherwick Studio, the giant honeycomb-like sculpture that comprises a mile of publicly accessible walkways.
Temporarily called Vessel, the viewpoint forms the centrepiece of the new Hudson Yards development in New York, positioned above active railway lines in the West Side neighbourhood.

That’s a great point. The Eiffel Tower, every public statue or sculpture in the world, artwork in museums, poetry, literature, etc; all things that nobody wants or needs. We should absolutely restrict ourselves at all possible moments in time to only creating/building things that are “practical“ in nature. We should have no books except for STEM textbooks. Culture is a pointless artifice that we pretend has meaning. Plus, if there are people starving in Africa then we should give away all of our money and possessions until everyone in the world has equality of outcome. Pointless wastes of money, like all of my previously cited examples, will be seen by future generations as somewhere on the spectrum between exorbitant and criminal. Oh, and we should kill all of the architects, poets, writers, musician, dancers and artists because they are not meaningfully contributing to civilization.
I personally find the world a better place with the vessel in it. I think slightly better of humanity knowing this exists. Hopefully you can accept that there are other opinions in the world besides your own and that just because something comes out of your mouth, and feels true to you, it does not represent a general consensus.

@@MeatNFixins You are better than this...For your information most of the art pieces that you mention of ...came from an era in history where there was no such thing as equality, a time where you could getaway with colonialism and slavery....Can a sane person take presidence from a bygone era and compare it with contemporary times...And some of these structures actually served a purpose...The Eiffel tower for instance was to serve as a grand archway to an international expo held at Paris, an expo of progress and scientific innovations and the tower by in itself represented the an architectural feat....How do you ask I know about it... because I am an Architect myself ... What straight purpose dose the "Vessel" hold if it were not for real estate advertisement in a serpentine effort to increase the land value in the area.....I agree everyone is reserved to have their own opinion on it...But trust me I am not a mere passerby....By the way Africa doesn't need your patronage (Seriously when will the west come out of this "White Man's burden" and straight up Messiah Syndrome), look at your own backyard... your slums, your own ghettos, trailer parks...With the kind of life 3/4 of your population lives can your country really afford to pay for a monstrosity worth 200 million dollars with hard earned tax payer's money...It is just a blatant and gross show of wealth which I believe is not quite the feature of a developed egalitarian state...

And you just printed a pretty picture of the usage of the Eiffel tower. I could make a very similar case for the vessel. I’m graduating from Architecture school soon so you can’t really hold the fact that you are an architect above me on this one.

I don't understand the appeal, honestly. It's attracting crowds now as it has just opened and is a new 'pretty' structure - I do like the materiality, but I don't think that the actual design will function as they intend to. What general member of the public would like to walk all the way to the top on a regular day? What incentives are there to do so? And how does it promote interaction and connectivity between people?
I understand the thinking behind the project, but I think it just falls short. There could've been another layer of interactivity added to the structure, instead of making the assumption that the reason people will interact with others is just because they can see others on the structure, if they are at all. I don't think the structure even acts as a meeting place, the further you interact with it (ie. the higher you go) you become further apart from others, segregating each other and in turn reducing interaction.
I just think the project could have been more than it currently is.

I was there yesterday with a friend in a wheelchair. There is a single small elevator that holds about 8 people at a time. It is super slow to enjoy the sights but that also means that someone in a wheelchair has to wait about an hour to get into it. It goes straight to the top on the backside of the vessel which means that once you get up there, you are missing the best views of the water and yard. The wheelchair user is constricted to a small area in front of the elevator which is mostly taken up by people on line waiting to take it back down. While I appreciated the aesthetic of the stairs, I strongly believe this entire structure could have easily been a series of spiral ramps rather than stairs or at least could have included an internal layer with a wrapping ramp. It's clear that accessibility was an afterthought and not considered throughout the entire design process. Now we are stuck with a beautiful structure that adds to the isolation of people with disabilities rather than a universally and thoughtfully designed experience for all to EQUALLY enjoy.

there is a small elevator for disabled people only. if you are not obviously disabled, you have to argue with the elevator guy. the elevator goes to the top and back down with no stops in between. However, if you cant manage any stairs at all, you will be stuck at one platform at the top and you cant go anywhere because to go all around the top level means you have to climb up and down stairs. The designer did not take everybody in mind when he designed this. I have a bum knee. I would have liked to have elevator access when I felt my knee was getting too painful or at least to have had a bench to sit down to rest it for a while. Neither is available.

The stepwells in India had a purpose. These structures were meant to access water bodies and they needed to be secluded from public places because women used to bathe in them. Also, the wells acted as reservoirs and the water in them has still not dried up. There was another scientific purpose that I do not know much about. It essentially goes below the ground level to reach the water level. The whole point was to give privacy to the ones coming there and here these people are making it a public place and rising them above the ground! As much as the stepwells are aesthetically pleasing and have a purpose, this landmark is going to be a useless eyesore.

    - This is a Kafkaesque nightmare.
    - Cities need affordable housing, green space, or literally anything with community value.
    - Instead, the people of NY got a cold, lifeless, useless, luxury hornet-nest ode to vanity.
    - It could have been the same architecture but with living plants covering its surface area. It could have had a garden on top with actual bees nests! It could have been its own ecosystem!
    - The vessel is a physical manifestation of class inequity and our failure as environmental stewards.
    - This is a $250 million depreciating asset that _at least_ neglects to prevent harm if you don't believe it's _actively_ harmful.
    - I'm glad nets are going up now, but it didn't have to be this way.
    - Art pieces don't have to be grotesque 'vessels' that bring you to the existential 'edge' of death.
    - I won't be lied to and told lawyers didn't warn them low railings on a dystopian cockroach spaceship was a suicide trap.
    - They gambled for the sake of aesthetics and vanity. And four lonely, vulnerable, non-rich people died.
    - It's also ugly and makes me feel like I'm Adam Sandler in Click when he's sitting in his adult son's gunmetal space-office learning that his father has been dead for years.
    - I'm not saying it's not art. I'm just saying I think it's dreadful. Like, it creates an existential dread that rich people cure with luxury gift-shopping at the Hudson Yard's Mall.
    - This is the single most out-of-touch thing I've ever seen.

At first i thought it was the biggest waste of time when i saw it in the Chainsmokers video. Part of me still thinks it is but i can't really have a valuable opinion until i visit it.
To me it represents our culture perfectly. Instead of helping others or working on real solutions we focus our minds and money on redundancy. It seems way to symmetrical and no surprises for people to interact with. Its just stairs.
It should be called Redundant Tower. As a designer and engineer and architect i'm sure it was a great project but will it have lasting value? I don't think so. Escher's Redundant Tower.

I am a new yorker. This vessel thing is ugly and the first time I went there, the first thing I thought was that this thing is going to be perfect for suicides. the walls are really low and can easily be climbed over. There have been 3 suicides flying off it already. Surprised not more, to be honest. And it doesnt "bring people together" there is nothing to do except climb stairs. it does not promote interconnectedness or socializing. No seating available if you are elderly or tired. no place to gather to socialize. no place to read a book or drink a coffee. no way can it become part of the fabric of NY. it's just an inanimate metal Thing stuck on the west side. you cant even enter the thing at will. you have to jump through hoops, get a ticket and go through 2 or 3 ticket takers/guards to get inside. This vessel thing is such a waste of time and money. and it is perfect for suicidal people to fly off of.

I love it. It’s a gift to the street and the City. It’s not for making money. It’s for enjoying. It’s visually stunning and an instant landmark. Recent criticism about suicides has impacted the project. But it may be useful to note that there’s an average of one suicide every two weeks on the Golden Gate Bridge. Should we shut that down too?

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The Golden Gate Bridge is a functional structure, carrying people in their vehicles to and from San Francisco and Marin County. Over 111,000 cars each day. This "Vessel" is a monument to self-promotion. And completely non-functional.

How can lack of usage make it more popular. If it is not serving any public function then after visiting it once to satisfy your curiosity, why will you use this a second time. So it will soon decay in disuse. In India it was serving a purpose as providing water resource (well) to the people in those drought striken areas like Rajasthan. It is pure lunacy to spend this money for nothing.
One use could still be made of this building or vessel, a round covered tubular going at the top could be added which can turn this infrastructure building into a tourist attraction with a viewing gallery or providing an alternative window to the city - like Eiffel tower is. No one will go to the top using the stairs only to chat with someone else they already know. The tubular section around the top edge will look like a rim running around the top of the cup. In that tubular viewing gallery then you can have café and telescopic views to the city, sitting areas etc.
