Your comment made me do some research simply because I have never heard anyone refer to the whammy bar as "vibrato". Turns out it is actually the correct name for it! People most commonly refer to this system as a "tremolo bridge" which is incorrect because tremolo is an effect of varying volume, rather than pitch. A tremolo system or a whammy bar are equally right ways to call it, and now I'm a bit smarter for knowing that! I've been studying classical music for years, so I got a bit confused when you used this term in a context which I wasn't familiar with. In musical terminology, "vibrato" primarily means the technique of shaking the string in place with the hand which holds it down - this is most commonly seen with bowed instruments because they lack actual frets and therefore it's difficult for them to always sound in tune with other instruments. Vibrato in this instance creates a sound close to that of a chorus effect, and the inaccuracies in pitch get more easily corrected or camouflaged that way.
