Thanks for watching and for the critique. Well this is the type of tune to play open-handed because of its simplicity. However, it's not just the mechanics but the feel - can I get the same feel by switch hitting? That's the crux of the matter. Gosh I forgot about this tune - haven't seen it since I uploaded it. After about 460 uploads it's "out of sight, out of mind". Thanks for watching this video, much appreciated.
@drumstick5a Wow, thanks for being the first to comment. This video was blocked for about 7 months until I learned how to unblock it. Yes, that is a TD-20 module that has been upgraded with the Expansion card making it a TDW-20. The pads are TD-12 w/VH-12 hi-hat. Thanks for checking it out.
I agree - it is a very hypnotic groove - just very smooth and good sounding... as a goof around drummer this is always a favorite - just a smooth great sounding glide.. (Steely Dan has some of the best!) but I'm confused by the fills you refer to - I hear next to none - not a criticism - am I missing something?
Hi Sal, yet another great cover. I was really happy to see you laying open handed. Not a lot of drummers play this way. Unfortunately that’s the only way I know how to play and it has its advantages and disadvantages. Do you do any other covers open handed ?
Hey James, I think it's more of an advantage to drum Open-Handed. One song that comes to mind is a cover I did of the Journey song: Don't Stop Believing. th-cam.com/video/QLm8Z3IPaCw/w-d-xo.html It has some very different sticking patterns created by the great drummer Steve Smith. Any song can be played with the OH technique. Dom Famularo has a good textbook on the subject and every once in awhile I'll try to learn a new groove using that technique. Thanks for viewing my videos and keep drumming!!!
Out of all the drummers who do cover songs I follow you the most. I seem to be able to follow your technique better and learn the songs easier I’m an older drummer so even taking lessons is difficult due to me playing open handed. My instructor has to learn songs I want him to help me with open handed. He agrees with you. Some songs are easier OH. I just want to say “thank you” for all us drummers. It’s truly appreciated. One other thing, I pretty much ch just play electronic drums. I currently play TD30 KV kit. My only disappointment with Roland is the sound of their cymbals. BUT yours always sound amazing. All the time. What’s different?
So I'm back to the velvet underground Back to the floor that I love To a room with some lace and paper flowers Back to the gypsy that I was To the gypsy that I was And it all comes down to you Well, you know that it does, well Lightning strikes maybe once, maybe twice Oh and it lights up the night And you see your gypsy You see your gypsy To the gypsy That remains Her face says freedom With a little fear I have no fear I have only love And if I was a child And the child was enough Enough for me to love Enough to love She is dancing away from you now She was just a wish She was just a wish And her memory is all that is left for you now You see your gypsy, oh You see your gypsy Ooh ooh, oh oh, oh oh oh Goodness strikes Maybe once, maybe twice And it all comes down to you Ooh oh, and it all comes down to you Lightning strikes Maybe once, maybe twice (oh) I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes (And it all comes down to you)
yep your one lucky guy, i'm 57 sol and just got my hearing up to a stage which is near normal. ( I lost my hearing at 32, have cochlear implants one either side. you know I wanted a kit when i was a kid at school, I used to watch top of the pops, and used to play a long to the beatles, bashing on pillow cases, My dad would not buy me a kit and that was that.
jean luc bazin Unfortunately I only know a few words in Francais. One of my aunts is from France. I look for your site. I have done some Beatles cover collaborations with a fellow YT cover artist from France. Is this your site? www.onlinedrummer.com/
Nice cover! When you get a chance, tell me exactly what video set up you have & audio system to get the same results with quality sound. I live in a Co-op & everything must be recorded directly to my computer with out any outside sound. Thanks!
It's all about the groove and sitting in the pocket without taking unnecessary fills or chatting needlessly, but instead supporting the song's rhythmic structure. It takes restraint, experience, and maturity to pull that off. Thanks for watching the video.
dont you just get that shiver down your spine when you know your playing well? yep?
Looks basic. But I still couldn’t play. I love the drums. You play very well. Thank you for all your covers.
It’s not about simplicity, it’s about the groove, the feel. Thank you so much for watching my covers.
Incredible man!!

Thanks for video. It will help me learn this song.
Well you are welcome and glad it helped. Thank you for viewing the video.

I don't have plans to cover that, I've got too many other songs & drum stuff to do. But thanks for the suggestion.
This song has the most pleasing fills of any song I've ever heard. I don't play the drums, but damn.
It's a very hypnotic type journey, very FM style. Thanks for viewing the cover.

Thank you. I will send you a memo with the requested info.
So I'm back to the velvet underground
Back to the floor that I love
To a room with some lace and paper flowers
Back to the gypsy that I was
To the gypsy that I was
And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does, well
Lightning strikes maybe once, maybe twice
Oh and it lights up the night
And you see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
To the gypsy
That remains
Her face says freedom
With a little fear
I have no fear
I have only love
And if I was a child
And the child was enough
Enough for me to love
Enough to love
She is dancing away from you now
She was just a wish
She was just a wish
And her memory is all that is left for you now
You see your gypsy, oh
You see your gypsy
Ooh ooh, oh oh, oh oh oh
Goodness strikes
Maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
Ooh oh, and it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes
Maybe once, maybe twice (oh)
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
(And it all comes down to you)
