Always was one to look forward to what the future may bring, now from what I see, I'll be glad to see the back of it.
Late 90's kid here. My parents made me grow up with 70's and 80's music. I think it's the best era of music and think it's really sad that music like this isn't made anymore. The more a reason for me why the 70's and 80's classics are my favourites
Wow.... Ian... I haven't thought about him, and what happened for years, but I was a little kid then... Such dark times... But this song, yes, this song was perfect for all of us then. Thank you for remembering him.

It's 2023. I need to ask the younger listeners to understand how exceptionally ground breaking this song was in the early 80's. It was like we heard the sound of a new generation being born on the nightclub dancefloor. Nobody had heard anything like it prior. It wasn't disco but it was danceable, it wasn't fluff music but it had rythmn, it wasn't punk or heavy metal but it made an alternative lane of its own. It was a sound that was so original that no group was able to emulate it. It did open the door for OMD, Tears for fears and other electro groups of the early 80's. Most modern day electronic music can be traced back to New Order and their unique sound. I almost feel sorry for the youth of today because so far they get the same old music, just rehashed with a new face. I can't wait for this generation to feel the exhilaration of hearing something so unique and so identifiable that it becomes the sound of your generation. It's exhilarating, it's rebellious, it's a little intimidating, it challenges the old fuddy duddies and it excites you to the core. That's what blue Monday did to us. New Order are the voice of the 1980's and I still adore them to bits. I still pray that one day I can see them play live.
Thanks for the glimpse into the past on this! I was first introduced to this song as a cover by the band Orgy. Never knew the original was created ages ago.
The best comment ever. I saw them Nov 2018 São Paulo, Brazil. And they still banging, of course Bernard voice at live is not só pleaseant as one day but...he and Stephen , Gillian and the other two guys (sorry i don't remember their names) delivers a great performance. I hope see them again.
Yeah. It's a machine to make you dance or at least twitch. 1983. From the ashes of Joy Division. It's still astonishing decades on. Heard everything in Hacienda Manchester. There's nothing like this. Always pleased when someone enjoys it.

Good comment to stir up some debate. Intro's can be so critical to how the song hits a person. Some single mixes omit the intro that may be on the album track and vice versa... Some intro's just make the song though... like 'I Ran (So Far Away)' - Flock of Seagulls (original extended album version - approx. 5:02 ) with over a minute and a half of buildup before the vocals (that may be the greatest intro!) or say 'Sweet Emotion' by Aerosmith... without the normal album intro (radio edit often chops the first 30 secs) it's just not the same. Or Big Country - 'In a Big Country' album track with big rolling drum intro (not on single edit) or even extended album intro of Level 42 - 'Something About You' which I recently discovered and it makes that song soooo much better. Ha. I'm off here discussing intro's, not necessarily the greatest one's... but Blue Monday is indeed fabulous, timeless and pure gold. Cheers.
th-cam.com/video/cHLbaOLWjpc/w-d-xo.html. Bonkers version of Blue Monday played by Orkestra Obsolete (their spelling ) . On 1930s instruments. They only really play half of it but it's how it's played...
This must have been so revolutionary hearing over the airwaves and in clubs in 1983. New Order is truly one of the greatest acts of all time, or at least one of the most innovative and groundbreaking
It's just amazing to me that this band came from the ashes of Joy Division. They set the tone for all New Wave music and the MTV generation. I was in my teens and early 20s at this time, and I remember watching MTV for hours on end. Those really WERE the days.
I turned 43 recently but still wasn't born early enough to appreciate this music at the right time. Iwish I had been born in the 60s at least. :D Something dark and sxy about this. Love it.
This song never gets old. I used to spin this at the club I worked at and it would pack the dance floor! New Order did a show in the city I live in and partnered with our radio station for a promotion and I got to meet them and had a few drinks. The good old days!
Yeah! Tradition starts now,2021. Seems like the perfect tonic for all the madness around. Have you tried the Orkestra Obsolete version too,you should?!
This is 100 percent sarcasm. The English are much better at forming bands and such. The second new wave invasion of the early 80s was magical. We gave you back Madonna and Michael Bolton. Enough said
This song makes me realize I am a very old happy man because I 1st played it on a walkman in the 80s and then a cd player in the 90s an iPod in 2010 and now in 2018 I am playing it on my smart phone. Funny how the same song can bring a smile to your face every time you listing to it ( :

The 80's had a culture explosion unmatched since. You had New Wave, Pop, Hip Hop, Rock/Heavy Metal, R&B, House/Techno, and Freestyle music. Even a little Reggae all going at once. Everyone listened to everything.
This song blew my mind the first time I heard it and I was born in 96. I listened to it on repeat for days. Must’ve been really groundbreaking back in the day.
It was 1984. I was a young man going to the clubs for the first time off base, stationed at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan! The song hooked me from jump! But, at 3:33, when the Thunder Struck, I LOST MY FREAKIN MIND!!!! Thanks for the memories New Order! 🥲
Iconic, hypnotic. Alas, the hours spent in my college and grad school days on the dance floor when this came on. Great memories! And it hasn't aged. It is still as relevant as ever. A rock masterwork!
Right there with you. 2023 on vacation in Puerto Escondido Mexico as a 50 year old and this song interrupted my night and like 1983, everyone vibed to it.
On a day like today, March 7, 1983, 41 years ago, the single with this legendary song was published, a milestone for electronic and alternative music... IMMORTAL!
The streets are deserted. The schools are closed. People are working from home or not working at all. The only feelings anyone seems to have are on either end of a spectrum from terrified to bored. Today truly is an unusually blue Monday.

Yet here I am pining to be back in the 80’s with amazing music. Blue Monday, Fade to Grey , Vienna to name a few. Were did it all go so wrong?? Nothing good after the early 90's Brought up in the 80's and 90's. cant see where its all going from queuing in HMV for that single and recording top of pops, to all glued to there phone listening to complete shite. Late 90's kid here. My parents made me grow up with 70's and 80's music. I think it's the best era of music and think it's really sad that music like this isn't made anymore. The more a reason for me why the 70's and 80's classics are my favourites

We were all still grieving for Ian. Then this, with so much raw anger, poignancy, sadness and love. Thank you guys. It's a perfect tribute.
Wow....

Spot on!
Thanks for the glimpse into the past on this! I was first introduced to this song as a cover by the band Orgy. Never knew the original was created ages ago.

The best intro in the history of music, whatever your style of music. This song is pure gold.
Maybe not the best intro of all time, but I agree that this song's legendary.
Haven’t you listened to intros like “where the streets have no name”, “enjoy the silence”?
