I've been looking for a manga story like this where the MC finally properly keeps his guard up when approached suspiciously by others. I understand that usually the MC might forgive the fmc in stories like this, but I enjoy seeing that the FMC actually had to put in work to help get her feelings through to someone she truly cares about. I know many stories have quick pacing to get to the finale but I wouldn't mind reading longer stories with more down to earth MC with actual backbones to stand up for themselves, I enjoy these types of stories.
I also like it when the Mc knows the confession is part of a punishment and also has a backbone. Honestly you don’t have the school’s prettiest girl confessing to you. It’s a massive red flag and most of the time these punishment games are aimed at introverts to toy with them. Suzuhara was really lame for using a punishment game to confess her feelings to Yagami. She was scared to confess to him for her but wasn’t scared to confess to him as a punishment game. Yagami’s parents are at fault for teaching him to always be kind and what did that kindness do to him. He learned a lesson and stop trusting people and only trusted himself

BS, an d I am someone who calls out manga dub MCs for being beta cucks all the time. But putting aside that he treated her like crap - let's say we let that slide in view of your apparent belief about what was appropriate - putting a girl in a situation where you make her think you will force her into sex as some kind of test or punishment is a sh!tty think to do.
@rrobz oh true, i wasn't a fan of that part either. My comment was mainly on the MC's given personality of keeping his guard up like someone irl would do given his background, and not just randomly changing his personality and opinions cuz the plot is pushing for that. I understand these stories are all romcoms and the endings are rather predictable, but how they round out the stories to reach those endings matters a lot. The characters traits should drive the plots and not the other way around.
I agree with you his "test" for the girl was unreasonable and honestly a pretty bad thing to do, and I feel the story would be much better without that part, but him being generally cautious of others given his background is pretty normal and relatable behavior.
What FMC did was kind of stupid. She indeed love him, but used the punishment game to confess her true feelings to him. It also doesn't help that the MC has a rather depressing past. Just confess to the guy for real. As punishment games that involves fake confessions are horrible.
I think he would've thought of it as fake regardless, and mostly because of his past...

She probably already wanted to confess to him for quite some times but did not have the courage to do so she kept putting it off. She wanted to rely on the punishment game to give her extra external courage to confess to him.
Yeah his parents are so at fault for not teaching him how to stand up for himself and be tough like being a nice person doesn’t work out all the time and he learned that the hard way when some resentful people screwed him over for his kindness
I dealt with a truly insane amount of racism and bullying in junior high and high school. I attended a modest-sized private school where I was one of perhaps 10 minority children in the entire school, and there wasn't a single member of the faculty or staff that was a minority with the exception of the two janitors. This was in the deep South in the late 80s and early 90s when a teacher's response to my reports about the racism and bullying was simply "Just ignore them," as if that was possible when they were trying to physically assault me.
I did have friends, but not many; just a couple of kids who were "unpopular". There was one exception, though: I was very close with the amazingly gorgeous but incredibly shy redhead girl in the class. You know how ever class seems to have "that one redhead girl"? The one in my class had brilliant strawberry blonde hair, bright sea-green eyes, lightly-freckled fair skin, and the face of an angel. For some reason, she was comfortable talking to me and we became friends immediately after meeting in 7th grade.
She changed my whole life in 10th grade. She asked me out just before Homecoming, and that simple but critical change in our relationship swept away all the dark clouds. She was always around me now, so the bullies had trouble getting to me; nobody was going to mess with her because she was too sweet and her parents had too much influence at the school. Her mere presence brightened up all aspects of my life.
To this day I wonder how much differently I may have turned out without her. I was on the path to becoming a cynical and angry person, just like Yamagi in this story, but she turned me back around and helped me grow into someone who strives to be friendly, generous, and caring.
One person can truly make all of the difference in the world to someone else. Consider that you, dear reader, could be to someone else who this sweet, loving redhead was to me.

My case had some similarities to yours.
I was also a minority in a good public school but the bullying was real bad.
Calling some bad actions racism would've been dishonest, as all side were equally at fault as aggressors.
So I didn't use that excuse.
Outside of that, I already told you the rest for me.
My "best-friend" hooked up with the girl that would've been the closest thing to my love interest.
And I never recovered.
I'm almost 35, never had a girlfriend, my future is ambiguous or at least my fatalism has convinced me so, and what I do now is extract what joys I have left.
These manga love stories are beautiful, I know they're the ideal, but we are so far from the traditional relationships of the past that it has made me resentful of those who abandoned traditional relationships and values.
Today everything is so messed up, I wonder if maybe collectively we have earned this punishment for turning against our traditions.
All my old friends became fucbois or openlegs, I don't think us deserves happiness now.
I only feel guilt for the younger generations who had been raised into such a dysfunctional world.

After hearing with his so-called friends did to him in junior high I honestly don't blame Ren for keeping his guard up and Misao could have used other means besides the opportunity of a punishment game to confess her love to him I understand she was nervous but after she could have at least confessed to him in other ways well anyway it worked out either way for the two lovebirds.🙂

What I like about this story is the ending wraps everything up nicely. It is dealt with realistically and Yagami-kun is allowed to grieve, vent, and be upset. Suzuhara did not shut him down, and no matter what she showed genuine love towards him. This is a great story and balances the unrealisticness of anime and the realism of reality. I hope everyone here is okay

I’ll say this again. You don’t have the school’s prettiest girl or Madonna suddenly confessing to the Mc (usually introverted). It’s a massive red flag. Yagami’s parents are at fault. They told him to always be kind but being kind doesn’t work out and caused him to stop trusting people because of what he went through in middle school. I don’t blame Yagami one bit. His reasons and actions are justified. As for Suzuhara I really don’t understand her. She liked Yagami and was scared to confess but she wasn’t scared to confess to him as a punishment game like she herself said at 13:44 it was lame of her to do that and the sad thing is this punishment game is always aimed at introverts to toy with them. Yagami really learned that kindness doesn’t always bring a positive outcome. This story reminded of a similar one Kanon’s Rom Com where the Mc received 3 fake confessions
I've watched that episode as well. If I was the MC in that episode, I would've bitch-slapped all the bitches who faked their confessions and told them to stay out of my life. The same applies for the transfer student (Aoba, I think her name was), I would've told her to go play hopscotch on a minefield

I can relate to the MC about having trust issues since I was brutally betrayed by 2 very close people to me. Karma bit them bad but left me with a lot of trust issues to where it took me just recently to trust in family members and they weren't the ones who hurt me in the first place , this was 5 years ago and I'm still having a hard time recovering with these issues.

What a great and sad story I watched something similar but a little bit different the MC of the other one I watched was confessed by different girls and he was naive enough to accept the confession but when the girls revealed their true motives it broke him to the point of not trusting anyone because of it and then came a new girl the difference is the new girl confessed her true feelings towards him but he didn't believe her because of his past and he was mean towards her but she never gave up on him she asked him why don't he take her seriously and he told her the reason she went to those girls and scoured them harshly for what they did to him they all apologized for one-by-one they said they only did it because they thought it was funny and didn't realize how much they hurt him he went and ask the new girl about it slowly he began to open his feelings towards her and that's about it. It's good to be kind but not everyone deserves your kindness. Be Kind to the Right People, but Not the Wrong People.

Suzuhara was annoying for most of the video. Confessing to someone as a punishment game alone is low but using it to confess to the person you like is dangerous no matter how scared you are. Suzuhara being serious about her feelings after he reached out to her in the past is admirable though if not annoying.
It's probably the art style, but the FMC is so cute. I'm glad she was able to break through to the MMC. Betrayal is not an easy wound to get past.
