been a very long time map reading etc. was taken my son out into the the new forest for the first time and you made it easy for an old man like me to get back into it and teach my son. thankyou. hope you are doing well.
What are children taught (or not) nowadays? Works very well when you have no charge in your phone or internet connection. Basically along the Hall and up the Stairs.
Whilst this is really helpful as I just bought an OS map and I found a good walking route in Lake District (OL6) but the coordinates for the different points on this route I found all start with 'NY'? These NY coordinates have no bearing on my OS map, I would have expected them to start with 'OL'. What am I missing here?
Hi Peter. The ‘NY’ reference number you are referring to is the National Grid reference number. These are linked to the National Grid which provides a unique reference system and can be applied to all OS maps of Great Britain, at all scales. Great Britain is covered by grid squares measuring 100 kilometres across and each grid square is identified by two letters. We hope this helps. You can find out more here: getoutside.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/guides/beginners-guide-to-grid-references/
Great video. I need a little help with some mapping question. I am helping my son get ready for a geography question about map reading skills and I need some help. The question is to find out the 6 figure grid reference of a pier that is named and marked on the map. An OS map is provided with the question. The pier stretches over several 6 figure grid references as it is 300m long. Is the 6 figure grid reference for the pier supposed to be the: start of the marked pier, the end of the pier, the middle of the pier? The lighthouse at the end of the pier if there is one. Advice would be amazing. This is for a GCSE paper so there is no reference as to whether the answer should be from the perspective of a walker or a sailor. What is the convention that should be applied if there is one?
Now i wont get 0 marks on my geography exam on this section! Thanks so much
