We love our GQF Sportsman. We've had it about 6 years and have hatched several hundred chicken eggs. For backup we use the Cigar Oasis Caliber IV Digital Hygrometer. It's made for cigar humidors. It can be calibrated and works perfect. The best hygrometer we've used and it's very accurate.
I grew up with a family that hunted and I ate wild ducks and didn't particularly like them. Some years ago I went to a high end Asian restaurant on the Island of Gozo and the mater Dee talked me into trying the Asian fried duck and I can't even begin to describe how delicious it was. They slightly freeze the breast and slice it very thin and marinate it in a Asian wine sauce still slightly frozen. They put it in the hot grease for about a minute and it has a little crunch, but it tastes amazing. I think I almost ate 1/2 of the breast. I'm sure you could find the recipe online, you will love it. It makes my mouth water just thinking of it.
@@KCFarms the only way I like duck is the Asian style of cooking it. Mom cooked a lot of ducks on her old cast iron wood stove and I had to eat what was cooked or go hungry, but I didn't like duck.
Congratulations on the successful hatch! You are correct that the "dark phase" ducklings are not correct for the breed (at least as far as what's currently recognized in the standard), but they do show up out of purebred Appleyard flocks, including from well known breeders such as Dave Holderread. I'm not exactly sure of what genetics are all involved in dark phase vs. light phase Appleyards, but I assume the dark phase must be caused by recessives if they come out of light phase flocks. I think I also see at least two white ducklings in the bunch, which again, are not currently recognized for the breed but do come out of purebred flocks. The ducklings with the "Mohawks" are the correct, light phase Silver Appleyard genotype. If you plan on ever breeding/selling hatching eggs and want to breed to the "proper" standard, you might want to make sure your able to keep track of the dark phase ducks and keep them separate from the light phase, as I think they end up looking pretty similar as adults (and even when you have only light phase in the breeding group, a disclaimer that they could produce dark phase and white might be a good idea). The whites of course should be obvious as they grow. Both the whites and the darks will still be great ducks, as they only differ from the lights in their color and still have all of the same productive qualities. Good luck with them, and I hope they continue to do well.
I have this same system except I’ll be using the Hatcher as to not get all the fuzzies stuck in the incubator. It’s the GQF 1550 Hatcher. Anyway my question is on the automatic humidity tray sponge thing. Do you add just one or how many? And on lockdown when you bump up the humidity how many do you add?

That’s interesting. I never tasted a duck egg. How does the flavor compare to a pastured chicken egg? I’m not aware of anyone selling duck eggs in my area.

Gail Damerow’s book “Hatching And Brooding” is a great resource for all poultry..she has tips for spraying them each day..

I have used just a half of sponge and then add more to get your desired humidify for lockdown
The Hatcher would be nice to keep incubator clean

That will be fun. By opening and closing the holes on the side and back can adjust humidity as well

No problem. I would say it’s similar bit it’s a lot thicker fried and a lot more yoke
