The main vocalist of BINI is... Colet?

  • There are two official main vocalists in BINI (Colet and Maloi). Also: Colet's lower range is NOT where she shines. Her mid-range and upper range are much better (Colet has the best head voice in P-Pop; her belts are also some of the most open, refined, and naturally POWERFUL in P-Pop).
Note to viewers (in response to a comment I got here and deleted): Colet is a SOPRANO (confirmed by her sister multiple times) by pop standards. Not an "alto" (a true contralto is extremely rare in pop and this vocal type is NOT the same as whatever role you had in choir) and not a mezzo either. Even if she WERE a mezzo, vocal type DOES NOT determine how much potential you have. No matter what your vocal type is, you have infinite potential. No matter what your vocal type is, you have all the room to grow as a vocalist. EDUCATE YOURSELF.
If you're out here saying that vocal type determines how much potential a singer has, saying that it limits them? You're ignorant! Seriously. Please reflect and educate yourself some more. And to reiterate: Colet is a soprano. She can reach all the notes the other girls can reach. Everyone in BINI's poste line starts getting significantly tense when belting around D5. Colet's upper belts are good too and have improved; just because she doesn't often GO FOR them doesn't mean she can't reach them. (People have different confidence levels, you know?)

Yes! That irks me a bit. Not to act like a solo stan (I'm really not), but like...there needs to be more Colet clips in all the BINI vocal compilations. She's the main vocalist, but I feel like she doesn't stand out as much in music videos and whatnot compared to Maloi (runs, pop-friendly tone, kulot), Jho (loud, booming voice), and Mikha (deep, husky timbre, most unique texture). I feel like people gloss over her until they watch the Lagi dance and vocal practice, even though she's always been so good and stable with the best technique of the girls.

@@sage.alcantara i would not describe jho's voice as booming at all... it's actually the lightest in the poste line. but she's quite good at producing volume even with her light placement. i wouldn't describe mikha's voice as deep either 😭 when speaking, maybe. but most of the time, when singing, she loves to add nasality and airiness to her voice. it sounds very light and bright. (mikha's lows are some of the best in the grp, though)

Colet's so underrated (fight me, I'll defend this against those who think otherwise). I don't think she's recognized for her singing nearly as much as she deserves, let alone her songwriting skills. I hope your videos get more views because she's incredible. Thanks so much for the compilations! I don't have social media accounts, so the only way I get to see these clips is through people's reuploads on TH-cam.

It really didn't come to my mind that she's underrated wow. I mean if people don't see and recognize the talent she has then I don't know what kind of talent they're looking for. Her pitch is always on point, she's always adjusting her sound every time they harmonize because she can hear everyone. She's what they call "The ace of Ppop" and she stands for it.

@rajabmuti8532 Hardcore blooms who follow them on social media and have seen most of their unofficial singing videos know that Colet is an ace, but the impression I get from casual blooms, especially non Filipino blooms, who only watch official MVs and maybe one or two wishbus performances, is that Colet is a good singer but about on par with Maloi and Jho, but in my opinion, that is still underestimating her as a vocalist. She just doesn't stand out immediately the way the other girls do (for reasons yen explains in the other comments), which means you kinda have to dig deeper to find videos that showcase the full extent of her abilities. She does everything so easily and her voice is so round that people think she's not singing that high or that she doesn't belt or whatever. They only really get impressed with the Lagi dance and vocal practice, because that's where it becomes obvious how good she is, even though she's always good.

She is a perfectionist. She cried when her voice cracked during the Taalarawan media conference. She reacts when other members sing a wrong note because she holds herself and her teammates to high standards. That's why she was emotional after a voice crack. Despite being sick, she still performed and even continued to sing after she cried.

Colet is under appreciated and not given the proper credit in majority of their performances or videos. One example is the Lagi Dance and Vocal Practice. But in fact, she's the top tier vocalist. The other two, Jhoanna and Maloi did belt high notes, but they were sranding still. But Colet, she sustained the last chorus and hit the notes, while dancing. Dito kase sa Pinas, kung sino yung mataas ang boses at biritera, akala yun na ang pinakamagaling. Pero HINDI. Hindi ko pa naririnig si Colet na nagflat at nawala sa tono. Sa kanilang tatlo, si Colet is on top. Nag aalangan lang siya bumirit kase iniisip nya parang hindi niya kaya, pero she can. Awayin niyo ako sa comment kong 'to pero I don't care. Ilalaban at ilalaban ko siya. Colet has the ears, alam niya paano isustain parts niya, alam niya when to adjust. I JUST HOPE THAT THE MANAGEMENT CAN GIVE HER A SONG NA MAHAHIGHLIGHT NAMAN YUNG BOSES NIYA.

Just to clarify, most of the singing Colet does in this video is birit. She's belting. These are high notes. I guess the difference is that her voice is, ironically, probably too solid and round. She makes it sound effortless, so you don't realize how high she's singing most of the time.
But (just for comparison, no hate) try to listen to YGIG's Amakabogera cover. Their main vocalist, Hazilyn, fails to sustain the B4 in the intro (the amakabogeRAAAA -- the final syllable is a B4 belt). You can hear (and see) how she's losing her breath and how tight the note is very quickly. Most of Colet's notes here are B4 belts or higher. The "tooo" in "sa tugtuging ito" at the beginning? B4 belt. It sounds like nothing for Colet, right?
Another comparison for reference: AJ from G22 rarely belts above A4. She tries to sing a sustained Bb4 in her "Labo" cover. (Search it on TH-cam, the Bb4 starts at 1:26.) I think it was a pretty nice effort, but again, she rarely belts from this note and you can see how much effort she has to put into belting it. (And you get the sense that she couldn't have kept going for very long.)
Colet is a belter. Her belts are so effortless that people don't usually realize how high she's singing most of the time (as Jho said around 2:44 of my video above, Colet's final chorus was so high!). I think, ironically, the problem might be that she doesn't strain most of the time. Her belting is TOO solid.
Because I was watching a reaction video earlier. The guy was reacting to a compilation. Jho belted a gorgeous, well-supported B4... the guy didn't react. She sang an Eb5 -- it was a good effort, but tense. Jho belted an F5 and the guy said that was her best note. Her best??? Jho's F5 was actually her worst in the video. It was extremely tense and strained. Jho's B4 and Eb5 were much better, but funnily enough, Jho's B4 and Eb5 were NOT strained. I guess a lot of people love hearing strained notes because they sound dramatic.
But yeah, a lot of people think that you have to go ridiculously high, to the point where you're straining, just for the note to be high. When in fact, most of the notes Colet sings are already super high. Her voice is also actually very bright, not "low" or "deep." I think people just have weird expectations when it comes to singing.
Also, let's compliment Colet without putting the other members down, okay? I do agree Colet is technically their strongest vocalist, but we can discuss that without putting anyone else down.

True! Alam ni colet kung kailan siya papasok at bibirit.👌👍 Hindi siya basta-basta kanta ng kanta. Its not about pabiritan ng boses as long narerecognize pa rin ang kanyang quality of voice, the way she performed on stage and sa music videos. May kanya kanya silang range, tone of voice and uniqueness. Porket bumibirit si johanna and maloi eh bibirit din Siya. May nakalaan na kanta for her na doon lang siya papasok at lahat yun ay kaya niyang magampanan because "She's a Versatile" when it comes sa singing❤❤❤ at magaling siyang makinig kung tama ba yung harmonization nila. Mapapansin niyo yan sa mga soundcheck videos nila, thats colet talent.😊 BINI GROUP AY WALANG TAPON. THEY CAN SING TALAGA! KAKAIBA TALAGA ANG P-POP TALENT👌👍🇵🇭♥️♥️

Thanks. I feel like I'm going crazy every day. Just deleted a comment where someone was claiming that Colet shines in her lower register and she's not that good with her mid-range, when in fact Colet starts pushing down her larynx excessively and loses projection as early as G#3 in her lower range. Even her A3s sound quite thin already.
Colet shines in her mid-range and her upper range (best head voice in P-Pop, genuinely). I just don't get why people cling to their misconceptions. Colet is not the low note queen who doesn't shine on higher parts! She isn't! Please stop! You can hear her sustaining her Bb5 with ease and fullness here, you can hear her belting effortlessly (Jho even says her part in Lagi is high), but you insist she shines in her low notes? I'm so tired. I'm tired! I want to quit this vocal analysis stuff, but thanks so much for appreciating it while I'm still here.

Some context for the thumbnail: I don't have a video of it, but a fan at the KCON Panel yelled "Maloi" when someone asked who the main vocalist of BINI is. Colet said, "Hoy, may isa pa" (Hey, there's one more). A lot of people erase that Colet is officially a main vocalist.

The video itself doesn't really linger on that moment. It's just used as a prompt in the thumbnail to get people curious about what Colet's position really is and to listen to her sing and prove she deserves that role.

COLET is known for her vocal prowess and versatility. During live performances, she effortlessly transitions between different vocal styles, showcasing her ability to adapt to various musical genres. Whether it’s a high-energy pop anthem or a slower, more emotional ballad, Colet’s voice shines through with clarity and emotion. Her vocal range allows her to hit soaring high notes with precision while maintaining control and power in her lower register, which adds richness and depth to BINI’s harmonies.
What sets Colet apart is her ability to transform on stage. Despite being known as one of the more humble and reserved members off-stage, once the music starts, she captivates the audience with her stage presence. Her voice becomes a commanding force, drawing listeners in and adding a layer of emotional depth to each performance. Whether it’s through intricate vocal runs, smooth transitions, or ad-libs, Colet consistently enhances BINI's sound with her vocal talents.
In addition, even while executing the group’s demanding choreography, Colet maintains strong breath control, delivering stable and polished vocals. Her live performances are a testament to her technical skill and natural musicality, making her one of the STANDOUT vocalists in the group and a key contributor to BINI’s growing success in the P-pop scene.

She isn't very recognized because she doesn't try to be the center of attention and is very HUMBLE. She's shy, but when she performs, she automatically transforms into a talented overall DIVA.
Colet, is one of the standout members of BINI, known for her vocal abilities and stage presence. Colet quickly became a fan favorite due to her powerful and versatile voice.
    Her Vocal Prowess:
Vocal Range: Colet is recognized for her impressive vocal range, which allows her to tackle a variety of musical styles within BINI's diverse discography. She can hit both high notes with clarity and sustain lower tones with depth, showcasing her versatility as a singer.
Technique: Her vocal technique is well-honed, allowing her to deliver smooth transitions between head voice and chest voice. This skill is especially evident in songs requiring a dynamic vocal approach, where she can effectively convey power and emotion.
Expressiveness: Colet's voice is not just technically sound; it’s also emotionally expressive. She has a unique ability to convey the emotion of a song, whether it's the upbeat energy of a pop track or the more soulful, introspective moments in slower songs.
Live Performances: In live performances, Colet consistently demonstrates control and stability in her vocals, even while executing complex choreography. This highlights her stamina and breath control, which are crucial for live performances in the P-pop industry.
Colet’s contributions to BINI's songs often include strong vocal runs, harmonies, and ad-libs, adding richness to the group’s overall sound.

Also, the other two do more of the adlibs/belts so people tend to notice them more. But Colet, though not always belting, is almost always all over their songs - harmonizing, layering, doing adlibs and main melody. I remember one reactor's comment that Colet is working overtime in the HMTU wish bus performance because she hasn't put the mic down for a while. @@mcv-mnv Colet is belting in most of these clips, though 😭 and doing them well too! Jho even got tired when trying to belt her parts in Lagi because of how high it is.

@@li.moreauProbably because sa repertoire nila (about 16 songs pa lang pinakinggan ko) most of the highlighted belts kay Maloi or Jho napupunta. Notable exception i noticed is her part sa Strings and HTMU which for me Colet owned vocally. But when it comes harmonies and adlibs she is Bini's champ next is Gwen.

    • @li.moreau

@@mcv-mnv I think it's more because of the fact that her voice sounds relatively weighty. Colet is a bright-toned soprano like the rest of them, but compared to the others, her voice is less matinis. She's quite efficient at producing a lot of volume despite also having light belts.
Like I mentioned, her lines are actually high most of the time. Her final chorus in Lagi is higher than Jho and Maloi's bridge parts. But Colet makes it sound effortless, which ironically probably makes other people not realize how high she's singing. People love a sharp, thin sound.

@@mcv-mnv Maloi and Jho are fond of using cry technique in their singing (purposely thinning out their vocal folds to make their singing sound more emotional, like they’re about to cry).
Colet often belts as high as them or even higher like in Lagi - but her voice sounds so round and solid that you probably won’t realize it.

@@li.moreau I forgot about Lagi dance/vocal practice. Colet was in choreo the whole time on that last chorus compared to Maloi and Jho's more relaxed walking/standing. So yun pala yun, cry technique - i learned something new today.

To be fair, most of their songs gave the spotlight to either Maloi or Jhoanna. But people misses a lot of times Colet does the adlibs and that she actually harmonizes more than she does the belts that Main vocalist usually does.

I swear colet shines more when she sings alone or solo prod (that beyonce prod was pasabog, vocals and dance)… sometimes, bini songs hold her back, i mean it doesn’t highlight much of her vocal prowess.
Popularity within the fandom, I wouldn’t say she’s underrated more like 4th or playing with 3rd sometimes pero I get what you mean na her overall talent is underrated (if i wear to decide she deserves more, the world recognition)

I think their recent songs line distribution hurts her image/title as the main vocalist. She got a bigger assignment to harmonize with others, she's the only one doing the "lower voice layering", since Jhoanna and Maloi can fill Colet's role(belting), now Colet is free from doing the other roles needed for the song (voice layering/harmonizing) if you ask me that is the definition of a "Main Vocalist", who is flexible. Being a main vocalist doesn't only mean Belting, the lower register can be as hard as the high register.
    Jhoanna and Maloi: Belting
Colet: Belting, Rap, lower register layering, harmony
So, what's not Main vocalist about her?

    • @li.moreau

don't forget her upper range. she has a lot of upper notes in their recent songs like her prechorus in salamin salamin, her head voice ad-libs in pantropiko final chorus, and her E5 high note before the 2nd chorus of na na nandito lang

This is because their “roles,” which Jhoanna herself said are not really emphasized anymore, is quite confusing.

Simple explanation ..Colet’s voice was strong or buo na mataas unlike regine velasquez na light at matining, bnuo sila dahil para balance, harmony thing may kana kanya silang flavor at part para perfect Ang blending. Di mu sila makukumpara Sa bawat isa. Iba ung Boses ni maloi ni jhoana etc.. pero eventually there’s a potential that they can learn and develop at top level pa, ambabata pa ng mga ito.

    • @li.moreau
      @li.moreau  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

For the 1 millionth time po, alto is not a vocal type. It's a role you can CHOOSE to take in choir (and easily swap out if needed). Choir terminology is useless when applied to a pop singer like Colet.
Contralto is a vocal type. It's extremely rare to see a true contralto in pop. Please listen to Sheryl Lee Ralph singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" on TH-cam to hear how incredibly deep a true contralto voice is. Colet having a veryyyyyy slightly darker tone than Jhoanna and Maloi doesn't mean "may pagka alto" siya. The idea makes no sense. All of them are sopranos. Period.
