For me, I have mentally accepted that this team will not make the playoffs this season. However, I have started counting their record since the last Calgary game, which makes me happy.
Unless they go on an absolute tear, they're not making the playoffs. Instead, we'll be saddled with another mid-1st pick in what may be a down year in the draft that only time will tell. Time that the core doesn't have in 3-5 years if they wanna win within the next year or two. Add to it the failure of the organization to scout, draft, develop, and retain those 1st round picks between 2016-2020. It feels like whatever decision GMBT makes could set the stage for the next decade of the franchise. Who do they wanna be? My guess is that they'll play it conservatively...stick with their picks and let the team perform as it may after the $108 million. I highly doubt they'd throw that caution aside and package them for the cap hit of a Cozens as previously mentioned. The fan base would be just as concerned with them being another Turris or Granlund regardless...refuse to include Duchene in that list, especially for his performance in his last 149 games as a Pred and as the point leader of the Stars 🤮...he falls into the Fiala category more than anything. But I digress. As for the Stamkos remark, I'd wager that McDonagh's stint with the Preds and later return to Tampa factors in the decision inasmuch as the play of the team last season.
