I feel so bad for Hesh at the end. That 200k is meaningless now his wife is gone.
Tony coming by to drop him the bag, now that she's gone. It's hard not to think that Tony acted like he was doing him a solid by giving him the full take right then and there.. instead, it's exactly what's owed. Nothing more. No boost, nothing. And this is literally one of his best, and only actual friends. It boils down to just being another show, of just how far Tony had fallen in the end.

Paying him all the money back when he was at his lowest was the lowest. When Tony felt he was once again superior (he still had his wife) the money didn't matter to Tony. Fake friendships based on Murder and Violence. What a Masterpiece the Sopranos really is. RIP JG - and incredible actor.

I didn't see it that way at all, that's interesting. I sort of thought Tony seeing Hesh's grief made him realise how childish he was being and gave him a wake up call. I guess it is tactless for him to give him the money when the guy's sitting in his pants with tears stained on his cheeks.
I don’t see that at all i saw it as Tony being a man and like Max just commented, it took him seeing his friend going through hard times to realize how childish he was being. He was even acting extremely awkward as a normal person would be when in a similar situation. Tony was just being Tony as usual, which is why it makes his genuine interactions with only a select few seem questionable, but the truth is that those few that he even gives the time of day to other than his family or “assassin servants” are the ones he actually cares about throughout the show. Even the annoying neighbor he enjoys trolling. That’s his way of saying he likes you for a guy like him. Hesh more than likely knows this by now, but is too depressed to even think about Tony or his 200K! I would even argue that in Tony’s world that was his way of cheering his friend up by “suprising” him with the money he most likely wasn’t going to give him. At that point they both knew their friendship would never be the same.

But look the reason this show is the best show ever written (in my opinion) is because there are millions of fan theories. I think it strikes a chord with all fans - old and new. Great writing and incredible casting.

Tony was embarrassed being shaken down for his vig in front of the guys.
This whole show is so brilliant. Across the entire series, it depicts the heartbreaking emptiness of a life based on deception and superficial consumerism. Hesh is so worried about having loaned the money to a sociopath that he connects the money to mortality itself (fearing that death might become the end result). Then the show hits you with the cruel ironic twist of death happening outside the circumstances of the loan with the way it hits an innocent victim. Then in the end he gets the full amount paid back in full, and the money (for the first time in the episode) is utterly superfluous and meaningless because he’s truly lost something actually meaningful in his wife. That lost shot is so haunting: he’s left with the now despicable sight of the bag of money and empty condolences of his phony friend.

When he starts being a total dick to Carmella over the Jets that was one of his lowest lows in the series. Tony was just as much of a junkie as Chris, he just wasnt addicted to heroin.

Informal, yes, but in normal cases deadly for the borrower if not paid exactly on schedule as agreed to. Tony could have borrowed from another rich Italian mobster like Johnny Sack, but then his financial distress would have been known to New York... not something he'd want advertised. He could have borrowed from Sil, perhaps, but then he'd have to pay Sil back on time and Tony wouldn't have wanted to do that. So he leaned on Hesh, the vulnerable non-Italian. Hesh was lucky to escape this entanglement with Tony with his life and money intact and he knew it.

In fact that exact same crisis is the basis of The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, which is the play that introduced the money-lender Shylock. The Jews of Venice had long been the financial backbone of the spending of the nobility, but when one noble got in trouble he turned to the courts and prosecuted Shylock for usury, which is the lending of money for interest.
Anyway Duke Orsino turned on Shylock the way Tony turned on Hesh. Don't go thinking the writers of this show are not well-versed in the greats.
It’s amazing how you can love Tony one second and despise him the next. Amazing show and an even better actor.

A very wise man once told me you don’t loan a friend anything. You give it to them or you don’t.
I have NEVER and I mean NEVER loaned a single penny to a friend or family member or child, it ends too poorly. Now, I have GIVEN plenty of money to family, friends and my kids, but I NEVER expect it back.
That man was wise indeed.
I could have used this advice in words back when I was young. I never put it in such a clear way. But I learned this lesson the hard way.

It’s sad how close Tony and Hesh were in season 1 and now this. Never loan your friends money.
They were never close is the point I took away. You're just being given more insight where tony isn't present in the later episodes. For example nothing is really different except when the phone hangs up here we stay and hear his thoughts.

People develop ability to do things. For Tony, betrayal, manipulation, dissasociation and murder were something he could easily switch on.

The Hesh Tony story arc highlights perfectly the tight rope these guys walk everyday, something as simple and innocuous as reminding Tony about a loan destroys their entire relationship, that single lapse of judgment on Hesh's part destroyed an entire lifetime of friendship, it also really goes to show no matter how friendly and loyal Tony seemed to Hesh it was never a true friendship, they were associates, I think Hesh forgot this and ended up making a big mistake that in the end could of cost him his life.
But what's he supposed to do just write off 200k? Hesh thought they had a strong relationship which in the end proved to be right as he did get his money back. I think the fact that Hesh gave him 200k shows the bond, even if you are a multi millionaire 200k is still a huge amount of money. Tony was the one acting like a dickhead, I don't think Hesh expected him to be so reluctant to pay but he had two choices, either address the debt or be a bitch and say nothing.
Hesh did everything right, because rest assured if he *had* said nothing Tony would've used that as a free pass not to pay him back.
Someone in Hesh's position can't account for how unhinged and unreliable Tony has become, the best option would've been either A: Saying he didn't have extra capital to move around to give Tony the loan in the first place.. or B: Talked Tony down to a much smaller loan that he would've had no excuse to pay back on time, or worst case scenario he didn't, and Hesh wouldn't be out much cash from the loan.

For one Tony's crew isn't exactly known for their finesse or subtlety when it comes to taking someone out, Tony discreetly slipping Hesh's wife poison seems far less likely than having one of his goons handle it like he always does.
That and we can only assume that her death caused Tony to temporarily have some sympathy for the man and pay him back, whether or not the full remainder of that balance was actually in the bag is up for debate. lol

I read that entirely differently. Repaying Hesh was the only gesture Tony thought of, I thought it was a good thing , rather than an insut ...and a part of his making condolences.

His friendship with Hesh didn’t end over the money. It ended because Tony just walked away with no comfort or compassion for a man who was heartbroken and just needed someone to at least sit with him... and because at that point Hesh feared and distrusted him so much...
No. It ended because Tony saw Hesh sort of like a father figure. He came and asked him for advice and used him as a therapist. But then he realized Hesh did not give a crap about him or his problems. And wanted his money back. That changes Tony's whole perspective on Hesh. And it hurt him too.

they're so good at character development in this show. they can make you love Tony in some episodes and hate him in others. the best show of all time imo.

One thing this show has taught me is how people just come and go, no matter how close you are. One way or another, it will end. Look at all the friends and family Tony lost. I feel as though that caused his depression to worsen in later seasons.

Absolutely. TV shows teach you the most important lessons in life. For instance, if you get cancer you should not start a meth lab, even if you are a chemist. And, more pertinently, if you are in a criminal organisation, and your boss asks to borrow 200 thousand dollars, you should not do it, if your boss is something of a friend to you.

The most precarious moment of Hesh's life was sitting there grieving while Tony set the bag of money on the table. It would have been just like Tony to have Hesh look at the money and at that moment deliver to Hesh a 3:00. this mini saga of the 200k is very fascinating and relatable. i can't tell you how many times i have loaned close friends, or family money and then watched things go from normal to weird to resentful, even in cases where the other person never ducked me, or acted in bad faith. it just seemed like we both started to feel like money was more important to the other person, or that they were ungrateful, and maybe there's some layer of truth to that. the longer the situation is dragged out with time and payment installments, the longer the resentment and resulting tension continues to simmer. the death of hesh's wife put all those hard feelings on ice and immediately re-oriented both tony and hesh's perspectives as friends, and of themselves. it's very intriguing how the death of a loved one, and the empathy felt towards a grieving friend, can result in an abrupt truce, and dismissal of grievances.

Whenever people go on and on about, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc. Even 20+ years later, it's STILL, "The Sopranos" for me. The levels of hypocrisy, betrayal, and deceit of all of the characters...…….....combined with the subtlety and nuance of so many of the scenes. I always say that this series was Shakespearean.
A huge part of Tony's business as 'boss of the family' is extorting people AND collecting (one way or the other) exorbitant interest on loans, yet he's all pissy about repaying a loan...…………….for gambling of all things.

It was written by actual writers, playwrights, journalists, and people who actually lived the baltimore life. Thus it has a very literary feel to it. And that's what makes it the best tv show ever made. Not only is it entertaining, but it's layered as fuck.
I don't think people will be telling others how great GoT was. I saw the writing on the wall in Season 4. Skipping pivotal plot points because you don't think they're important is totally something D&D would do, and they did do. Let's forget about Tyrion's whore and Tywin's deception! That's the whole fucking reason Tyrion decided to actually kill Tywin is when Tywin told him the truth about the whore he married.

Tony had the means to pay the money back in full all along, but he dragged it out, paid just the vig, and broke Hesh's balls continually about it, in front of everybody.
