I watched Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice like one watches a car wreck. Contestants who lied, cheated, threw their teammates under the bus, Trump said they "have the winning spirit." People who seemed decent, treated others with respect, they were "losers." That was all I needed to know.

I live in Charlottesville, since 2014. I spent the day swimming in Crozet with my family that day 12 years ago. Lee statue was eventually removed. As a transplanted Yankee, I was appalled to see the homage to the Confederacy here,including reenactments of the Civil War at county fairs. These people have a hard time letting go of the good old slave days here. Our tiny Jewish community was directly terrorized by the chanting and stalking of our synagogue. I hate Trump and how he handled the event. May he lose bigly in November.

Two of the nicest and hardest working people I've ever known were Holocaust survivors. They raised two wonderful, caring boys. They came here with nothing and made a success of the small business they opened eventually. I worked for them for a time, my first job. They taught me the value of working hard and doing it the best I possibly could with honesty. Those lessons served me well until I retired.

I was raised in ATL, GA suburbs when Jimmy Carter was Governor. I was 11 yo and it was the beginning of the New South movement when racists and the kkk were pushed out of society and out of government positions and there was a huge surge in growth. Finally, it felt like hate wasn’t going to be tolerated. By the time he ran for President, things were better, not perfect, but finally moving in the right direction. My first vote was for or him when he ran for 2nd term, but Reagan won and ‘poof’ that dream was crushed for a while. Be kind to Jimmy, he’s a very good man.

Mary, I grew up in Texas. I have voted Dem all my life. One of our rival high schools was Robert E.Lee High School. This was in the 60s. No one, as far as I knew, thought about the name at all, except to think he was one of the generals from our region of the country, the south. It was a regional pride thing. That was as deep as it went. We all had the same mass delusion that kept us in denial that the war was fought to keep men enslaved. We knew we lost, but we honored the soldiers for their sacrifice and courage. You have elucidated the true meaning so well that it really made me see how we absolved the guilt by denying there was any.

I am glad you brought up the point that not only does Harris need to win but we need to flip the House and add to our Senate majority. We have seen the Republican antics and obstructionism. To end Maga and Project 2025 nutjobs they have to be shown the door.
Not to be antagonistic, but.... don't be naive. The people responsible for P2025 will not abandon their efforts just because Don the Con got shot down. They will note that the they were THIS CLOSE, and then regroup and try again in a few more years. It is literally the stated goal of Christian Nationalism.
That is why, as a nation, we need to start reining in religion and removing its influence from national policy, legislation, and education.

Unfortunately, anyone ignorant of this country's history won't be any smarter if they return to most American history classrooms. Most people were not exposed to the full story of Robert E. Lee and other traitors in an American history class. For me, Howard Zinn was one of the first historians to lead me into the light.

One of my relatives fought for the Union forces in the Civil War and contracted Tuberculosis during his service. After he returned to his family, his family got sick. My cousin died, then 3 of his children suffered long and protracted illnesses and deaths due to tuberculosis. The Civil War killed many people who never even took up arms or marched onto a battlefield.
