I have picked up a banjo lele it's my first time using an instrument I hope that I can get a smile on my mom's face as soon as I can..... she's left this planet and off to a bigger galaxy she was my influence on the guitar at first then I moved in to be a very young mother. Also I'm from the ozark mtns in the middle of the bluegrass capital of the world !!I will never be ashamed of the world of which I have been fortunate enough to reside in. What a lovely sound .... those Deering Goodtimes are about $500 these days and the "hoop" part of it seems big but it might be worth it for that wonderful sound. Besides, it'd be more room for me to paint a hokey Hawaiian scene on there... I had a Deering banjo I never learned to play but I can say those things are built really solid.
This was really helpful. However, I am a BRAND NEW player. Do you have a video that explains your movements with your left hand and which fingers you pick for strumming on your right? This is difficult for someone who has never played anything before :)
I'm trying to learn mandolin, and I thought it would be neat to have a banjolele tuned GDAE same as the mandolin. There is the Pyle banjo mandolin available in my price range, but I think I want just four single strings instead of paired strings. For one thing the double number of strings puts more pressure/ tension on everything, making tuning less stable. Another option would be tuning GDAE but one full octave lower than a mandolin, which I think is the "Irish" tuning for a tenor banjo... unfortunately tenor banjos are a bit out of my price range at this point. In any case I wonder if either of these GDAE tunings are possible on a cheap concert-sized banjolele?

Alan Prince Alan, Deering is a great banjo uke for all levels. Remember that you can play it anytime you wish since the tuning is the same as a uke - gCEA. IF YOU CAN PLAY UKE, you can play banjo uke. The only difference is the sound. Also, everything I’ve shown here can apply to your acoustic uke. Give it a try! Thanks!
At 1:32 when you were picking, it looked like your ring finger was resting on the membrane. Was that deliberate, and if so, what does it do to the sound?
Do you muffling the banjo sound is needed when jamming with other ukes. Does it stand out too much... especially if hitting the wrong chord? Thanks for the vid. I really wanted to learn to pick last year. Didnt quite get the hang of it. What is one exercise to help one get comfortable with picking?
visualpun650 yes, I partly mute the sound if the banjo isn’t blending well with the other ukes. A good learning tool for picking is to do a 4321 pick, where you pick the g,then the c, then e, and then the a strings. Change chords after 4 beats or so.

Evil Twin not sure what you mean by “the membrane “ but at 1:32, all I saw was a pull off with the ring finger which gives a plunky banjo sound.
