If you had been in the army at that time, you would have been assigned to the "broom platoon." Besides cleaning up the barracks and policing the adjacent grounds, you would have enjoyed weekends and holidays off while the rest of your platoon worked. Such are the differences in the branches.

@adadsupreme, at 1959--1960, i got 7 days, bread& water sentance for haveing an argument with 2 cuban gentalmen, they were arguing with a young marine at the guard shack to the navy base where my destroyer was tied up, key west florida was mostely inhabited by cuban,s & sailors & marines,somehow i got involved in the argument,& threatened to throw the 2 cubans & their bicycle,s in the ocean,being 19 yrs old & tough as nails didn,t help the matter none.the young marine didn,t help matters any when he pulled his pistol out of its holster.that stopped the argument, but when i appeared at my captiansmass, they wanted me to press charges on the marine,they had standing orders, if they pulled their weapon & did not fire it, they would be charged with derilection of duty. I said NO & wound up with 7 days in marine custidy on bread & water, supposed to do no physical activity,on bread & water sentenance,but after 3 days, they had me out in the exercise yard playing vollyballl,when the marine comadant heard about it all hell broke lose,& i was sent back to my ship. USS JACK W WILKE EDE 800 KEY WEST FLORIDA.
