Hay Mike whos the guy? at the @ mark in the video.. he looks familiar to me, is it Sroka :) invalid with Twingalaxieslive :) i got him om mt FB friends list :) small world
SNES version of 94: - score a goal and celebrate with riding the stick or gliding on knees with hands raising the roof, or lifting a leg up and fist pumping. -crowd in San Jose doing the chomp motion with their hands while Jaws song plays -5 players -body check opponents fully into bench -goalie actually smothers the puck when wanting a whistle -Jersey designs are accurate to their nhl counterparts -colour player images -Ron Bar behind desk like a tv show presentation -much more variety of organ music during gameplay -better intro and menu music It’s not just an updated roster of NHL ‘92 like the Sega version.
This documentary is one of the best video game doc I have ever seen. So much passion shown by everyone involved. Very informative but also a great story. Great work Mikey!
How weird was the Memories that came back to me watching this, Im 30 ish and I bought a Sega console for my kids (Megadrive?) its hooked to my tiny portable CRT tube TV id commandeered from the kitchen and my kids are brawling over something that happened playing NHL94 lol I confiscated NHL94 for a few days and they went to play Sonic instead and yet the brawling continued between the older boys with weirdly the Younger 3rd Son ending it with a cracking shot to the nads with a cardboard cutout hockey stick id made them to play with in the lounge-room using the bath plug as a Puck. Later I made 3 Sticks using plywood and man did that cause some carnage and even took them to an Ice Rink to see what Skating was all about. Man they got dinged up playing with those pint sized Hockey sticks but no harm no foul and later in highscool they knew their way around the basics of Hockey in the Gym, Not unusual? It was in Australia lol
Finally got to watch this! Thanks to everyone who were involved in making it! The interview with Mark Lesser was hands down my favorite part. I could have listened to that guy talk about game programming and NHL 94 for hours. 😁🤘
Hey Mikey, I'm not sure if you're checking comments on this years later, but this is Stef, the girl who showed up to the first King of 94 to record some matches on a computer. Finally got around to watching the doc. Loved every second of it. I'm going to the King of 94 tournament in Toronto tomorrow. Hope our paths cross again sometime. :)
Talk about a labor of love. Thank you from someone who doesn't follow hockey and doesn't play video games. I can't believe I watched the whole thing and enjoyed every minute. I'm still smiling.
Fantastic! This was easily my most favorite game on Genesis. I'm surprised I even graduated college with all the time I sunk into it. A true classic. Great documentary!
The original NHL hockey had the teams but only the player numbers. The next year NHLPA ‘93 had the real players but not the real teams. So when ‘94 came out, to have it all come together was magical.
This was really amazing. Good job buddy. One thing I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned was the amount of superstars/hall of famers in the game as well. Each team had a bunch it was the best era.
Such an amazing video! So cool to see so many hockey fans into NHL94! What were you going to ask Jagr? It sucks that you didn’t get to talk to him, but at least it’s cool to say we’ve seen him play live!
JR’s definitely a beaut. Back in ‘93 my friend called his hotel while I remained quiet on a 3way call. Pretty sure Amonte answered the phone and passed it to JR. JR was super cool right from the hop, soon after the small talk my friend asked if he could please have a game stick. To my amazement JR said I won’t give you one but I’ll make a trade for it. All he asked was if my friend had one of his rookie cards which he needed. Can’t recall if he wanted his French Upper Deck or O’Pee Chee Premier rookie card. The very next night after playing the Leafs JR met us at the back of Maple Leaf Gardens made the exchange with my bud and signed about 10 items for us, his golden aluminum Easton stick included!
Great video, thanks for that! I'm from the PC version NHL player, playing 94 and 95 till these days still on keyboard as in the old days 😀 Still remember the day I saw this game for very first time, it was huge step forward compare to face off and stuff like that, and then it took on PC about next 3 years before the 3D NHL was playable, so I think that is the reason what makes NHL 94 so legendary. Btw what you want to ask Jágr for question? Shame that he didn't have time, he is usually open to talk. Btw he is still playing until these days in Czechia, just announced his very last season. 🙂
MAan, thank you so much for making this. I played 93, 94 & 95 incessantly back in the day. I lost days, many days, to these games. This documentary mad eme just go buy NHL 94 off Ebay...cannot wait to get it and push that cartridge in my Sega Genesis console. THANK YOU!
Mikey Dude! This is amazing! As a lifetime gamer since Pong, an ice hockey fan and player and an aviation nut, you hit all my buttons! No to mention an amazingly edited and this polished film is phenomenal. You good man. Kudos on all counts. Love it! Your skillz are world class, on all your videos. So much appreciation for you. You got a great life buddy!
Thank you for uploading this, this was amazing to watch! I'm slightly younger than you guys but my first video game was NHLPA 93. Thankfully I had a bunch of older cousins in my family that played 94 so I was always close by. Maybe I can consider myself "King of NHL Hitz" ;)
I grew up with the EA NHL Franchise. From the first one in '91, I've owned/played them all. '94 definitely still stands out today. Growing up in Pittsburgh, I saw Jagr play in person all those years ago. Such a good player. (But, kind of a jerk, as you found out. RIP) The Lesser interview made it all better though. LOL Thanks for the vid! #SubForYou (and "King of '94")
This is a wonderful doc. Thank you for spending the time to make this. I grew up on the EA hockey series. I had every game (for one console or another and a few years on pc) from the original up until the last game released on the original Xbox (I can't remember the year of the last one). This may surprise some of you, but 95 for Genesis was my absolute favorite.
nhl 94 literally raised me...I should have been in this documentary...I remember the first time I played it. it was 3am, I woke up my mom, she heard me, then I quickly turned everything off and pretended I was sleeping on the couch...haha. Legit though, I had a rough childhood and NHL 94 was the best distraction I could have from my reality.
I also mastered the game to the point I would play as an All Star team against the Ducks and pull my goalie the entire game, but still win. Also rolled up to 99 goals once,..i forget what happened after though.
Me and a good buddy of mine used to play this game religiously lol loved the nostalgic feeling I got watching this mikey. You can do no wrong pal keep up the great work 👍
Mark Lesser succinctly lays it out before us at the end, life experiences, something that's done well, will shine through an achievement and make it worth your while. And stays in the heart of people, keeps being cherished. Like this game that I want to play now, although I've just heard about it yesterday. And I'm not into sports titles on top. But that's the point, I've been told. So thanks for this documentary, and thanks Mark Lesser.
Just watched this again to get a hit of that lovely nostalgia feeling. Those last couple minutes of Mark Lesser were very motivating (45 Minutes in) "there's nothing trivial about something that is done well" will be my desktop wallpaper from now on.
Love the Theo Fluery cameo!!!! I love that guy ... I'm a die hard Detroiter but always a huge fan of Theo.... Great job on the documentary this should have waaaaaay more views , I enjoyed the entire show , thank you ✌
When I was a kid, I rented NHL 96 and was blown away by it. But I didn't have the money to buy it, so I got NHL 94 second hand instead. And I gotta be honest, I liked 96 better, but I played 94 for so long that I learned to love that game and it marked me in a way that 96 didn't and I ended up never getting 96. Spent countless hours on it with my brother and it holds a very special place in my heart, it was worth a lot for me that I could own it.
Well done !! You successfully put all the ingredients together. You actually made this interesting to a non gamer. Mikey, with all sincerity, you are good at this. I truly can’t wait to see what is next.😊
I grew up in a little hockey town here in Minnesota. We used to Have Minnesota High School Hockey Tournaments on Sega using this game. You had to change the lineups (No Player over a 75 rating) and we matched the teams to Minnesota High Schools by color. We would have over 20 people drinking beer and playing. It was a blast and we still talk about it and say things like "Remember that night when Willmar won the MHSL Tourney"
Awesome doc guys!! NHL 94 was the first hockey game my dad bought us for the genesis in 94 and it was just amazing and still to do this my favorite hockey game, and the mark lesser part was amazing, and everyone is right, the games back then to me was just better, especially sports games since while for that time they were trying to be realistic it still was meant to be fun and played in a half hour or less.
@@smozoma yeah I know, but it would still be nice to have the ones I had from back in the day. I remember playing the season mode and as trades would happen along the way in the NHL, I would make trades in the game to match real life. Trade deadline deals got crazy.

I’ll be 41, I can’t tell you how many memories I have of this game...it’s also the first game I ever played online through dial up...Sega had something called xband...my mom use to hate it too...I still remember the glitch goal in this game too lol man I must admit I teared up watching this as memories with my brothers and I playing together flooded my memories...wish I still had it...
This game introduced me to hockey when I was in The Navy. My kids learned about 94 playing the 2014 anniversary edition on PS4. What’s better than airplanes and hockey?
Who in the heck thumbs down this thing? Boo on them. Anyway, nice job Mikey. I bought the video back on that old platform, and it's still a great watch. I see that Arda voiced over that old clip we talked about.
Straka82 from the NHL94Online.com: Love the doc man. Outstanding filmmaking. I love the aviation connection as well. I'm working my way through USAF undergraduate pilot training right now, so lets play some 94 sometime man and talk hockey and airplanes. Thanks for all the hard work putting this together.
Theo Fleury, what a player! His name is still one of those we hear here in Belfast when the question is asked “name your favourite Belfast Giants player of all time”
Gretzky-Lemieux-Roy era in its prime with the advent of Euros Bure-Mogilny-Selanne instead of the late 90's dead puck era. '94 wasn't just peak NHL series, it was arguably one of the NHL's all time peak seasons.
It’s great EA is making NHL 94 rewind looking forward to it hopefully they sell it as a stand-alone game and have online features it would sell like hot cakes.
Me and my buddies in the barracks used to have Madden 93 tournaments. Then when NHL94 came out we all switched over and it became our defacto tournament game.
My brother and I got NHL 95 for Christmas on the computer. It came with 2 gravis joypads. We played it to death. A lot of New Jersey Devils vs LA Kings exhabition matches.
I met Jagr in 1995, he was really nice and great. I saw him again in 2011 with Flyers and he walked right past me and didn’t talk to anyone else either. It’s got to be hard being famous, but I am sorry he didn’t talk to you... he is my favorite all time. I am lucky to have a penguins jersey signed. Also NHL 94 is in my favorite games all time list.... and should be in everyone elses
NHL '94 should be modeled as the template for hockey gaming playability. I don't care much for real-life looking graphics, latest hit songs, or a controller that has more options than a jet cockpit. Even the modern gaming consoles with their advanced graphics and nearly unlimited memory seem to be lacking something that NHL '94 perfected in this game. I'd be very happy to see this game remade on the PS5 but instead of pouring everything into some perfect 3D graphics, put all those extra cabilities into sticking with the old-tymey pixelated graphics and instead improving smoothness of motion (more frames per second), HD sound clarity, unique player capabilities and characteristics, and stadium details unique to each team's stadium. The simplicity is part of what made this game feel so perfect. It's sad that modern games drop this simplicity in favor of trying to emulate real life as perfectly as possible. They'll always fall short so why not just stick to a more cartoony, pixelated game like NHL 94 that who's game play is its best feature?
what a hidden gem this is somehow at 3.49am here in England i came across this (never played the NHL94 or even watched a full ice hockey game) but this documentary was a great watch
This documentary is grossly under appreciated
I very much appreciate your comment! 👍
After Ice Pilots and before Plane Savers I made Pixelated Heroes! Thanks for checking it out!!
Awesome job Mikey wow sure tugged on the heart! Well Done!
Hay Mike whos the guy? at the @ mark in the video.. he looks familiar to me, is it Sroka :) invalid with Twingalaxieslive :) i got him om mt FB friends list :) small world
Great video Mikey, 94 for life!!
SNES version of 94:
- score a goal and celebrate with riding the stick or gliding on knees with hands raising the roof, or lifting a leg up and fist pumping.
-crowd in San Jose doing the chomp motion with their hands while Jaws song plays
-5 players
-body check opponents fully into bench
-goalie actually smothers the puck when wanting a whistle
-Jersey designs are accurate to their nhl counterparts
-colour player images
-Ron Bar behind desk like a tv show presentation
-much more variety of organ music during gameplay
-better intro and menu music
It’s not just an updated roster of NHL ‘92 like the Sega version.
That face when you discovered that you held number 000001 in your hands!!!!! :-) :-D That alone was priceless!!! Awesome documentry!!! Loved it!
Brings back a lot of memories - mostly of spending an extra year in college because of all the classes I skipped to play this game.
This documentary is one of the best video game doc I have ever seen. So much passion shown by everyone involved. Very informative but also a great story. Great work Mikey!

Great work Mikey! This brought back many great memories of playing NHL 94 and Wayne Gretzky’s 3D hockey after hockey games and practice.
Gretzky 3D hockey is legendary as well.
The effort put into this documentary is amazing.
Thank you Bryan!!

Say hi to everyone for me at the Tourney this year!!! I’m stuck at work
You got it!!!
NHL`95 was my personal Favourite, I just wish there was Fighting in it, but I still love all the hockey games
Yeah I had '95 as well. Good memories mate.
That moment when you were holding NHL 94 Number 1... wow. That must have been amazing!
This series was very popular in the UK, massively more so than any other North American sports game.
Talk about a labor of love. Thank you from someone who doesn't follow hockey and doesn't play video games. I can't believe I watched the whole thing and enjoyed every minute. I'm still smiling.

This is the game that got me into hockey

The fact that the music was compared to Van Halen is a fitting tritube to the passing of Eddie Van Halen this week.
Awesome video Mikey
I still wear #27 in honor of the legend Jeremy Roenick. Met him a bunch of times and absolute beauty with the fans.
JR’s definitely a beaut. Back in ‘93 my friend called his hotel while I remained quiet on a 3way call. Pretty sure Amonte answered the phone and passed it to JR. I used to play this game with my brother and our babysitters 3 kids nearly every day after school from Kindergarten to grade 4.
This was tremendous! Could have been a five part miniseries if I had my way.
Glad to see this on TH-cam!

3:37-3:40

Man I loved this. This game ruled my life in the 90’s and I still play it today. Like I literally played it today.
@@richiesykes3298 thank you for watching! 94ever!
Good job boys!!! This doc brought back memories of friends and I racing home from school to play. Life was better back then. So was hockey.

Like households and neighbourhoods the world over, we had our own NHL mini league. I can still recite my lineup today.
"Reminder" set for the premiere!

Phenomenal game, great documentary, sad ending.

worth watching, although we here in South Africa know NOTHING about the sport.LoL
Looking forward to this - many fond memories of my dad and I playing ‘92 and ‘94 on the genesis.
Well done Mikey. Great tribute to the game that made my adolesence. Brilliant
Well done !! You successfully put all the ingredients together. You actually made this interesting to a non gamer. Mikey, with all sincerity, you are good at this. I truly can’t wait to see what is next.😊

Wow this is a hell of a documentary very well done, I remember playing nhl hockey in the sega as kid, brings back memories.
Oh my goodness. NHL 94 WAS college... We all played the crap out of that game.. It was the best
This was really great. Thanks for putting together this doc. Made my day.

It’s got to be hard being famous, but I am sorry he didn’t talk to you... he is my favorite all time. I am lucky to have a penguins jersey signed. Also NHL 94 is in my favorite games all time list.... and should be in everyone elses
I still have a sega megadrive. I got that off of someone for a back of fruit flavoured polos when i was younger.
Absolutely loved this Mikey played this in Australia during my childhood
I love that you mentioned the ultra rare card set. I managed to find the whole set sealed yesterday...I immediately jumped on the opportunity
Thanks mark!
Wow I always said NHL 94 was the best. Mikey thank you for making a great classic video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The makeshift Cliff Ronning Jersey make me LOL. Great stuff and I absolutely love NHL '94.
Thanks bud!
