I always bring three pairs of socks. One for sleeping and two for hiking. halfway through the day I change out my socks and have had really good luck with foot care. Thanks Darwin!
Hey Darwin, I live in California and since my childhood I wanted to hike the entire PCT at 60 and soon to be dead haha I will retire and do the hike, hopefully this summer will be going up Whitney, Thanks for the great vids and keep up the great work,,,, Mike
I just got my OR rain jacket. I love it. Im getting ready to hit the north country trail here in michigan. Im doing 1300 miles. Cant wait. You really have helped me a ton Darwin. Thanks brotha.
I had my 4-Runner broke into at a ranger station on the Laurel highland trail in Pennsylvania and then at a boat launch when we went on a 4 day canoe trip. It’s hard to stay positive, even after a good trip, when you come back to that. Some people suck for sure.
Howdy, just found your channel a few days ago, while I was looking for TH-cam channels about hiking gear load outs for a friend. He was worried that all hikers had heavy load outs like myself. Loving the channel so far. My clothes set up is typically 2 pairs of wool socks, camouflage pants, a couple t-shirts. A set of wool long johns if it gets chilly. For rain I use an oilskin duster and my trusty oilskin cowboy hat. People on the trail that I meet say I'm more akin to the mountain man than a modern hiker. I'm am currently trying to find a good set of buckskin pants and shirt to use but haven't found any in my price range as of yet. Have fun and stay safe out there
When you get to the San Jacinto area make sure you take a detour and hike to the peak. The distance is comparable to the distance you'd hike on the pct but at the peak you'll be able to see from Catalina all the way to the Utah southern border.
Darn tough, best socks ever. I've been an athlete since age 5 and wearing Darn Tough since they came out. I forget how many years now quarter length and love them. The very best! I also have the hooded Mountain Hardwear waterproof, windproof jacket, ultra-lightweight. I use it for hiking, cycling, motorcycle riding, camping, and more. It's an essential piece of gear. I like your helium jacket. Same concept! Great video I learned a lot and enjoyed it tremendously! And Bravo for the Links!!!
I like my North Face TKA 100 quarter zip polyester fleece pullover. It weighs 7.5 oz. I used it last week on a trip in the Uintah mountains for the chilly nights and worked great.
The Kuhl Radikl is a great long pant for hot weather hiking. They have synthetic stretch panels in different areas which do a great job keeping you cool. Honestly, I’ve never worn more comfortable pants.
Great video! I've been using the give n go briefs as my daily and hiking underwear for years and I love them! I recently got a pair of the give n go sport mesh briefs and while they are expensive I definitely prefer them. They dry faster, the waistband is much more comfortable, and I find the fabric to be a little bit smoother. There is no fly but since you are used to running shorts I suspect that wouldn't be an issue. On a drying rack with a fan on them they dry about an hour faster than my regular give n go briefs. Happy hiking!
Looks good. For Pants I prefer the Prana Zion Stretch pant. You could also save a few ounces in the desert by carrying a good wind layer such as Patagonia Houdini in place of your rain Jacket. That would also save wear and tear on your Rain Jacket until you get to KM. I hope to be back out there NOBO from Walker Pass mid June. Good Luck.
The pants I use are the Wrangler Performance Outdoor Pants from Wally World (Walmart). They are 34/30 and weigh 10.2oz. They have a little bit of elasticity and great breathability. I've hiked through a lot of briers and the pants have held up well. I hardly sweat in them and that's saying a lot considering I live in Florida. Front and back pockets as well as a zippered cargo pocket on the left leg. Excellent hiking pants for under $25.
I use frogg toggs for rain protection and I'm a huge fan, they're cheap and shed water like a beast, I know people complain about the durability but if you're cautious they'll do fine, usually only cost 20-30$, my jacket only weighs 5.5oz so theres some potential weight savings for ya!
Great List. I have a BlackRock Down Hat but still carry and probably use a MicroDome Beanie Hat more to Hike in. Also, I use "Wristies" as much as I use Glove Liners. They don't mess with my fingers but really keep the blood flowing to and from the hand very warm at the wrist. The other area we differ is that I carry Cap 2 Top and Bottoms to sleep in; but I think you mentioned that you didn't change that much for sleeping.
I hike in prana zip offs but never do as I don't like to hike in shorts. I layer a long sleeve shirt over a polyester crazy light T. I use the Ghost Whisperer and a Zpacks rain jacket that I highly recommend as it is crazy light and bomb proof. That's needed for the Pacific Northwet.
Hopefully, companies could be looking at this comment. I remember as a kid in the early 80s I had a puffy that had zip off arms. It wasn't high performance or nothing I don't think. But I'm surprised it's not a thing anymore. I think that would be super versatile especially for a lighter midlayer type puffy or even a fleece for that matter.
Try out the Kuhl Radikl pant. I used to wear Renegade, but now the Radikl is all I have. Lighter, better movement, same cut, just as tough. Gusset (and sides) is full tough mesh. It's amazing - huge range of motion. Find them and try on a pair. They're awsome.
The first 700 miles of the PCT is NOT just desert!!! There are cow pastures, fields, woods, high desert, and 9-11 thousand foot mountain peaks with snow and ice. In 2016, it was 32F at night in April on the PCT. Also, if you use sunblock SP 75, you won’t get sunburned. Last year, it was over 100 degrees every day and I wore shorts and short shirt and did not get sunburned on the PCT. For rain jacket, you can use a $1 rain poncho from Walmart with your wind jacket underneath - kept me dry on PCT for week rain in Sierras. I agree with your Nike Combat Pro. I use their tights with shorts. Perfect for Sierras and Desert sections. I do not recommend Darn Tough socks for Desert. Make feet sweat too much and get blisters. I prefer the Puma running socks. I have tested the Ghost Whisperer against the $20 Costco down jacket - same weight to warm ratio at a way lower cost! Instead of the hood, I use beanie with 4 way Hind hoodie and buff added neck coverage. Not trying to criticize you, but just showing hikers on a budget that there are inexpensive alternatives that work just fine on the PCT. I also think it is important to show hikers options. So many different gear selections of varying prices work fine. There is no magic cookie cutter formula. Heck, I did a week on the PCT/JCT with only aluminum foil and black trash bags for my shelter with a cheap tent tarp and a pack cover and bubble wrap for my dog’s shelter. I was just fine in the rain and cold.
I was at this years Outdoor Retailers show and found a company 'Compass 360', you said you may need to replace your rain jacket soon. They have a new product/rain jacket called the Ultra-Pak Jacket, 7oz. and has a self stuff storage pocket. Check them out. Thanks for taking the time to help us less experienced hikers, great and needed info.
Sorry TO hear about the Thief or Thieves that got into the Van. always makes me leary of trail-heads and park parking areas. but, as a fellow hiker i always carry my Columbia converter Pants. not sure of the Weight. but for hangin in hostel or at night they seem to make it nice to have clean and /or Dry to get into. and I usually used them for "laundry day" when hitting town. but, I like your Combat leggings Idea. no pockets but for a just hanging out. Not too shabby. KEep up the Vids..
Im taking a week long backpacking trip in Yosemite in a month and was looking at some of the Columbia shirts as a Hiking/mid-layer. I have one of their "heavier" hard shell rain jackets that I use for snowboarding on "warmer days" and I can get away with it and just a thermal long sleeve. So a Columbia shirt like yours, my rain jacket and a thermal long sleeve should keep me warm down into the 40's. ...and now I forgot what I was going to ask, oh well
I really love your videos! :D It won't be for another 3 year before I'll do the PCT (finishing studies first + saving up money + roadtripping with a self build van) but I'm already gathering tons of info from your videos. They are clear, short, well shot, no-nonsense and with all the handy extra links. love the little wiggle while showing the clothes, cracked me up :'D Sorry to hear about your car though :s.
Love your videos! I've been wearing Railrider eco-mesh pants and Journeyman shirt, both with Insect Shield, for many years. Lightweight at 10 oz. each. I've never worried about ticks since wearing them and their great for hot weather. Didn't know if you've heard about them but just thought I'd put it out there. Goodluck on your journey and perhaps I'll see you out there when I section hike north of Crater Lake (first long distance hike ever but am a trail angel with my wife in Portland area). Have a safe and fun time! :)
Hej, Thanks for your video. Very inspiring to watch like the others of yours I've seen so far.One question: don't you use waterproof pants, Gore-tex or something like that? If no, why not and how do you manage in cold, rainy weather? With best wishes for the next hike.
Ton of comments so hopefully this is not redundant. RE going with shorts after the desert, the sun in the Sierra at elevation will fricassee you if you don't put lotion on. I started the trail with a dark tan and the back of my hands got burned after a few days. Had to go with some lotion. Watch the ears too. Maybe some convertible pants? Will you be chronicling your hike as you go? Love your videos.
That's always a concern for me when I park my truck and leave it at trailhead there's nothing of value in my truck but it's always a concern sorry you were a victim of assholes. You mentioned in your video doing more of the AZT in October.please stay in touch with me here in Arizona if there's anything I can do to help you shuttle pick up or something
I'm taking off March 5th from campo, all my food is planned out just curious to know what expenses I'd run into on the hike so I don't carry much on me, like camp sites or random things I'd have to pay for in between sections til Oregon where I'd have to call it. see ya out there. no trail name yet ha late
Great video again - always like to know what clothes people are selecting. Mostly because I think I tend to overpack clothes. Although I do need to cut down personally, I think that I would end-up with a few more items than your kit. I wear SAXX underwear which are available in merino wool and like to change out every couple days - so that's determined by the duration of my planned hike (7-day hike would be 2-3 pairs). I'm also one of those folks that like extra socks - one pair on, two pairs in the pack. For pants, I like the Prana Stretch Zion convertible pants. They are "technically" a climbing pant, but I love the pair I have for hiking. Converts to shorts, but can also be a full pant. They come in at 412g and are quite durable. I'm probably going to get a second pair to have two. (one in pack) Shirts: I just picked-up an Outdoor Research Astroman long-sleeve sun shirt and LOVE it. I have a couple Columbia sun shirts that I also like as well. Again, I have one on and one in the pack. Basically, I like to have a full change of clothes in the pack in case I get wet. My old Scout Leaders made me super-paranoid about hypothermia. :) Again, depending on the hike, I also sometimes bring a pair of work gloves. This is for areas when I'm climbing up cliff faces, barnacle covered rocks, or root systems. I'm very interested in your picks for camp jacket and rain jacket. Mine are FAR too heavy.
Bummer about your van. I hope nothing too valuable was taken, and insurance covers the window. Thanks for the video despite what happened. You are the man. Good luck, be safe, and hike on.
Hey Darwin - great video! It's helpful because I tend to overpack. I typically only do week-long backpacking trips in the Sierra, but I've been studying up on thru-hikes to see if it is something I can tackle in the future. My question is: when you get to the section of the PCT in Yosemite, do you plan to do any excursion hikes off the main trail to see any sights (like Yosemite Valley, etc.)? Thanks, you and Snuggles have a great channel!
Did you consider wearing shorts and a UV-protection leggings? Should be lighter than the pants...I also would think about taking this in the sierras. I haven´t been on the PCT, but from all that I´ve seen you won´t find much shade up there + reflection from the snow...There is still a big risk of getting sunburned...especially if you wear the pants all the time before. Good luck for your hike!!!
Hi Darwin, thank you for all the awesome videos. Noob question here, I love the flexibility of the layering system, during cold spell you will be wearing the thermal tights, what do you do when its cold and then starts raining? Do you wear rain pants over your thermals? Or is your thermal pants is of a material that stays warm when it rains? Thanks again, love your channel.
I'm doing 4 days and 3 nights in the Grand Canyon in Oct. Would any of this stuff you wear be good for that? I'm only con earned about staying warm at night and early am. I'm betting it will be dry. Great vids and I look forward to more.
Darwin, once again, a great video. Keep up the great work. What is your opinion/experience with a very lightweight fleece layer? In cool weather hiking - 30's - 50's, I like wearing as light as possible fleece to warm up with when I start the day. I don't normally like to hike in my Ghost Whisperer unless it is really cold but I find the fleece is just right.
JMHO, but I find the heavy weight Capilene layer (or whatever they call it now) works nicely for this but much less weight. I agree, down hoody for me is only worn in camp or to extend my sleep system. For dry conditions with sun exposure, though the Silver Ridge shirt works great for me.
I'm sorry someone broke into your van. Hope they didn't steal anything of value. Widow replacement is around $300.00. That really sucks. In 8 months a revelation might bonk you on head to adjust your gear. I think the OR rain jacket has a guarantee.? I love toe liner socks to prevent blisters in between my toes. Thank You. Enjoy Life!!!
hi Darwin, thx for a nice chanel, i'm really like your videos. I have a question... how do you protect your legs from the rain? you told a lot about your jacket but i did not found anything about legs)))
I'm thinking of getting the mountain hardware jacket. What's the coldest temperature you've worn it in without a lot of layers underneath? How is it at blocking wind? Thanks. Great videos!
Curious, when are you starting your PCT thru hike? I'm thinking about April 1st, because I think I will need more time to fish. Maybe I'll see you on the trail.
Sucks about the van dude. Do you have any experience with the Arc'teryx hardshells? A zeta AR might be a really nice replacement for that OR Helium jacket when it wears through.
Do tell where you got both your bracelets. Me and hubs just beginners and haven’t go out yet but we binge watch you and finding amazing info thank you. Need a Mala bracelet and other one looks like a saying ✌🏻🙏🏻
Cool to hear you are going for PCT 2018, hope to see you on the trail, I'm also doing a thru hike this year! Now about the ghost whisper, would you consider that a necessity and about from what point on? That is the one thing on this list that I don't have a substitute for although my normal jacket is a bit heavier and might keep me a bit warmer I imagine (arcteryx beta ar), what do you think?
Good video man! I have never been using long johns under my shorts,do you think it is better to go with a pair of classic long johns or running tights? I would say running tights have a smaller holes in the fabric, so they can be better in a stopping wind? Thanks
The only redundant piece of gear I can see is the hood on the down jacket but otherwise an awesome list of gear. I love my running tights on cold mornings under running shorts. I would like to add a cost saving alt. to the Nike shorts and Merino shirt. I am an everyday morning runner: the Starter brand synthetic running t-shirts I have were $5.90 each and the 2 pair of Starter synthetic running shorts were $9.00. each (4 years if use/running and the stitching is good and material is not worn much). Walmart, go figure.
Love having a hood on my jackets!... I used synthetic running shirts for years to hike in but hated the smell they collected. Merino Wool is Anti-Microbial, so they don't get as stinky! Thanks for the Feedback & Thanks for Watching! Hike On, Darwin
No lidding. I cant get rid of the odor in my running shirts. The dryer smells like a warm stinky armpit when I open it. I use a spray prewash, not water and wash by themselves. Nothing I have tried works. It's likethey are possessed.
Use very hot water to mix Oxyclean in a small bucket, add shirt, wait 6 hours, wash as usual. Oxyclean is at Costco and everywhere else. It's a powder. I run a couple AirBnBs and it cleans everything and takes out all organic/bacterial smells! Don't need to do it every time, just as needed.
Put 3 or 4 cups of vinegar (you can get a gallon of white wine vinegar cheap at any supermarket) in a bucket of water (you have to dilute it) and toss the shirts in, probably two at a time for a normal size bucket. Let 'em soak for a couple hours and then wash normal. The smell with be GONE.
Not possessed, just...imbued. :-D One downside of synthetics is that the nature of the fiber means that organic odor molecules can actually physically bond to them in a more or less permanent manner. That's why you can buy an acrylic sweater from a thrift store that seems perfectly fine until you started wearing it, but once your body heat warms it up it starts smelling like the sketchy guy that's always sleeping at the bus stop - the previous owner's body odor has become one with the sweater.
Hey Darwin, love your videos, is your rain jacket waterproof enough? I have a Patagonia Houdini and I'm worried it might not be waterproof enough under sustained rain. Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Hi Darwin, I apologize if you already answered this question, but have you considered a longer gator to provide more protection against snake bites? Would that be something that you’d recommend, particularly for the desert mies?
Can you do a video on what it costs to hike an entire trail like the pct. not including the cost of gear and stuff... but like food and emergency and all that?... that would be helpful to a new comer to hiking... i eventually want to do a large trail like that... but dont know what it would cost to hike for 3 months
I see you have a link that says Helium 2 that goes to a Helium HD. In your video you say Helium 2 HD which I think are 2 separate jackets. Would you take the lighter Helium 2 on the PCT or do you think the heaver HD is needed?
Thanks for the video. So what do you have to change in to, in camp (sleep) and in town, as far as your lower body is concerned? Are you just taking the shorts and the tights?
Dear Darwin, I have been using the OutdoorsmanLab Ultralight Sleeping Pad paired with the AEGISMAX Outdoor Urltra-Light Sleeping Bag. So far so good but I would like a lightweight liner option that can raise the temp on colder nights. Any recommendations? Thanks
Hey Darwin!! I just wanted to know your opinion of the "patagonia nano puff" down jacket, have u ever tried it, how do you compare it to the one you mentioned in the video? Thx man! love your content! keep it up!
Hey Pau! I've heard really great things about it & I almost bought that jacket once upon a time... however I have a long torso & for some reason Patagonia loves making outerwear for short torso people...lol Hike On, Darwin
Greg m the better thing is that it will field dry and still be useable, which down jackets are not as good after they've been dunked and dried in a dryer. As for the "keep you warm when wet", have you ever put that to the test? Would be interesting to jump in a cold lake then go hike in your wet syn jacket and see how long it takes to get warm. I've field dried wet layers under my syn jacket and a rain jacket, but the syn wasn't soaked before drying those layers.
hey just out of curiosity do you take your bracelets and ring off when hiking? have you had any trouble with it in the past etc? i would like to hear more on this if theres anything to tell
I tried this on the JMT last year. Regretted it due to the two hundred or so water crossings in just this section of trail, at least one of which was a wade nearly every day. If you hit a crossing late in the day, your shoes will be cold and wet in the morning. But then I'm an old guy and it was September.
@@davidterrie7661 I walk in the UK so feet are always wet! One answer is to wear damp liner socks over my sleeping socks. They dry quickly and I have nice toasty liner socks under my wet walking socks in the morning.
What do you add/remove/change out of your first aid for long trips? I know you have recommended athletic tape but do you customise your first aid kit based on previous injuries/needs?
Darwin onthetrail - empty your vehicle of anything of value and open your glove box when you leave your car at the trailhead. Hopefully, people see there's nothing of value and leave it alone. Sometimes all it takes is 45 minutes and being less than a mile away. I learned this the hard way. I hate to say but it kind of hit a high note crime lately. Sucks. A lot of times people will just throw rocks just to be destructive. I have to fix my back windows to my van now since it was broken in to. Vintage chevy van parts are hard to come by on top of Having to replace mine, my sons, and my wife's packs and kit. Thank God there's good people in our sport that helped me out in getting my kits sorted again. Still waiting to replace more but had to break out my older "ghetto" stuff for the time being. Praise the Lord.. I can still get out there. I'm accepting donations by the way.. - LOL.
Not sure if this is more of a Q&A question, but is what happened to your car very common, or has it happened to you before? Sorry, that has to be awful to be come to. I've only parked on main roads or big parking lots, so I hadn't really thought about it before.
My first hiking boots were a pair of Gore-tex Asolo's that I used for 4+ years and I never once had a leak, unless of course water was running down into the boots from the top. That's where gaiters would have helped, obviously, haha. But I loved them!
hello im planning the pct in 2019 what kind of permits do you need for the hike and i heard you have to put in an application for the pct any type of maps that would help thank
Love those Kuhls. I'd leave the briefs at home. Go commando and save some weight while increasing 'breathability' and cooling. Sock liners, yes. Crotch liners, no! I prefer a wide brimmed hat for high sun conditions. Keep that sun off your neck and ears.
Dude. No offense but the sun is way more intense in the Sierra than in the desert. Got the worst sunburn on my legs there and had none in the desert. Think you should Rethink this.
I always bring three pairs of socks. One for sleeping and two for hiking. halfway through the day I change out my socks and have had really good luck with foot care. Thanks Darwin!

Changed out my rain jacket and rain pants for a poncho, I like its coverage. Multi purpose piece of gear as well.

I like my North Face TKA 100 quarter zip polyester fleece pullover. It weighs 7.5 oz. I used it last week on a trip in the Uintah mountains for the chilly nights and worked great.
Personally I've never needed gaiters when wearing long pants. Nice setup! Can't wait to see your PCT vids.

Also +1 on the Icebreaker tees. Sooooo good.

I've worn Injinji toe sock liners under my Darn Tuffs and have never gotten a blister!
Nice! Gotta love liners!
Hike On,
Darwin
Nice! I do the same, Injinji Liners under Darn tough merino, light cushion hikers.
Gonna be my strategy on the AT this year. Good to hear it might work!
Darwin! I'm starting my PCT 2018 NOBO thru hike on May 20th. I probably won't see you out there but happy trails! Hike on!
I've been using the or tantrum jacket and it's the best I've ever had. it doubles as a shirt and offers sun protection without being to hot.

I live in Sonora about a hour or so away from Kennedy meadows plan on doing the at in a couple years
I live in Forest Ranch, about an hour from the PCT as well. This August I plan to hike from Sonora Pass to Drakesbad Guest Ranch!

Thanks great video. I am putting my gear together for a 100 miles PA section in September.
Sweet! Have fun out there Warren!
Hike On,
Darwin
Im taking a week long backpacking trip in Yosemite in a month and was looking at some of the Columbia shirts as a Hiking/mid-layer. I have one of their "heavier" hard shell rain jackets that I use for snowboarding on "warmer days" and I can get away with it and just a thermal long sleeve. So a Columbia shirt like yours, my rain jacket and a thermal long sleeve should keep me warm down into the 40's.
...and now I forgot what I was going to ask, oh well
lol... well, you were on the right track! Sounds like a fun trip & a decent Set-Up!
Hike On,
Darwin
I really love your videos! :D It won't be for another 3 year before I'll do the PCT (finishing studies first + saving up money + roadtripping with a self build van) but I'm already gathering tons of info from your videos. They are clear, short, well shot, no-nonsense and with all the handy extra links. love the little wiggle while showing the clothes, cracked me up :'D Sorry to hear about your car though :s.
Awesome video, Darwin! Love your content - among the best information for hikers on TH-cam.
That buff will be in the hiking hall of fame some day.
Hej,
Thanks for your video. Very inspiring to watch like the others of yours I've seen so far.One question: don't you use waterproof pants, Gore-tex or something like that?
If no, why not and how do you manage in cold, rainy weather?
With best wishes for the next hike.
Worth it just for the down beanie info - can't wait to get one!
Recommendations for shoe inserts? Durable, comfortable, and fast drying!
Wanna get drunk fast? Have a shot each time Darwin says "I absolutely love this thing" :-D Great video !
Or the word crazy
Or tonne of @@wogahboy
Ton of comments so hopefully this is not redundant. RE going with shorts after the desert, the sun in the Sierra at elevation will fricassee you if you don't put lotion on. I started the trail with a dark tan and the back of my hands got burned after a few days. Had to go with some lotion. Watch the ears too. Maybe some convertible pants? Will you be chronicling your hike as you go? Love your videos.
Glad you're okay. Hope you didn't lose to much in value.
Would love to get a lit of the clothing Snuggles brings along on through hikes too!
Right on! October at the Latest, maybe even September. I'll keep in touch!
Hike On,
Darwin
Have you tried RailRiders Eco Challenge pants. Should work great for the dessert.
I'm taking off March 5th from campo, all my food is planned out just curious to know what expenses I'd run into on the hike so I don't carry much on me, like camp sites or random things I'd have to pay for in between sections til Oregon where I'd have to call it. see ya out there. no trail name yet ha late
What do you use when you go to sleep in the slightly colder temps?
Do you carry extra cloth for going into town etc?
(one in pack)
Shirts: I just picked-up an Outdoor Research Astroman long-sleeve sun shirt and LOVE it. I have a couple Columbia sun shirts that I also like as well. Again, I have one on and one in the pack. Basically, I like to have a full change of clothes in the pack in case I get wet. My old Scout Leaders made me super-paranoid about hypothermia. :)
Again, depending on the hike, I also sometimes bring a pair of work gloves. This is for areas when I'm climbing up cliff faces, barnacle covered rocks, or root systems.
I'm very interested in your picks for camp jacket and rain jacket. Mine are FAR too heavy.
I like to take my silk weight balaclava. I probably use it like your buff but the buff likely has more uses.
Bummer about your van. I hope nothing too valuable was taken, and insurance covers the window. Thanks for the video despite what happened. You are the man. Good luck, be safe, and hike on.
Damn sorry about the break in!
Hope everything is easily repaired.
Easy, but Expensive! $300 for a damn window!
Hike On,
Darwin
Good to see you sporting a button up shirt! I support this decision emensly.
Big fan! planing to hike the O trail at Last Torres National Park in November. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for clothing or gear
I also live in ABQ. Sorry about your van. Would you mind sharing the name of the trailhead?
Indian School Trail Head.
Hike On,
Darwin
Is the helium ll worth the money? I've seen folk love it and others complain about it's breathability.
Great vids and I look forward to more.
but will he make episodes documenting his trek like +HomemadeWanderlust??
Duh!!!... lol. I'll be taking you guys along on my hike next year for sure!
Hike On,
Darwin
Mick Beckers Stalker alert! Nah just joshing with ya Mickey babes, I'm sure you're a great guy.
Would you consider a gore-Tex bucket hat for a thru hike?
Thanks
Great list but it seems a bit early as you won't leave Till April? Don't you think this will change a bit?
Hike On,
Darwin
I think Darwin did not answer any question :)
Can you do a video on what it costs to hike an entire trail like the pct. not including the cost of gear and stuff... but like food and emergency and all that?... that would be helpful to a new comer to hiking... i eventually want to do a large trail like that... but dont know what it would cost to hike for 3 months
Are you hiking right to the border? Asking cause that's basically my backyard, I'm in Manning park all the time. It only half hour from my house
I see you have a link that says Helium 2 that goes to a Helium HD. In your video you say Helium 2 HD which I think are 2 separate jackets. Would you take the lighter Helium 2 on the PCT or do you think the heaver HD is needed?
I watch your videos. I'm motivated. Please give list of gears in text format in the description or the link to it.
Thanks for the video. So what do you have to change in to, in camp (sleep) and in town, as far as your lower body is concerned? Are you just taking the shorts and the tights?
Thanks Darwin, very helpful
No Prob Levi!
Hike On,
Darwin
Have you ever used a waterproof sock, like the sealskinz? I'm thinking a pair to put on after my shoes get wet might be handy.
Dear Darwin,
I have been using the OutdoorsmanLab Ultralight Sleeping Pad paired with the AEGISMAX Outdoor Urltra-Light Sleeping Bag.
Thx man! love your content! keep it up!
Hey Pau! I've heard really great things about it & I almost bought that jacket once upon a time... however I have a long torso & for some reason Patagonia loves making outerwear for short torso people...lol
Hike On,
Darwin
Nano puff synthetic insulation and not down, but will keep you warm even if wet as compared to down.
What do you do about stream crossing shoes? I tried using Crocs, but the current can pull them off--even when I tied them on with paracord.
I just cross in my Hikers & let them dry out as I hike. I stopped using a septette camp shoes a while back.
Hike On,
Darwin
I tried this on the JMT last year. Regretted it due to the two hundred or so water crossings in just this section of trail, at least one of which was a wade nearly every day. If you hit a crossing late in the day, your shoes will be cold and wet in the morning. But then I'm an old guy and it was September.
@@davidterrie7661 I walk in the UK so feet are always wet! One answer is to wear damp liner socks over my sleeping socks. They dry quickly and I have nice toasty liner socks under my wet walking socks in the morning.
Thank you Darwin ! Which kind of Buff? The merino wool one or the cheaper one?
What do you add/remove/change out of your first aid for long trips? I know you have recommended athletic tape but do you customise your first aid kit based on previous injuries/needs?
I'll be doing a Full Video on First Aid & Toiletries. Keep an Eye out for it!
Hike On,
Darwin
Will do, thanks!
Any videos on food strategies for the PCT?
Looks like Nike no longer offers the Pro Combat Thermal Tights, any recommendations?
man I hate that, I hope they catch the two leged rat, that got in your van, thanks for the video, keep up the good work darwin
Darwin onthetrail welcome to Oakland.
Nope... Albuquerque!
Hike On,
Darwin
I know haha.
Who steals stuff in Albuquerque? Lol smh
- LOL.
Good video, I especially like the info. And the way you listed it below the video segment. And yeah man wool"
Not sure if this is more of a Q&A question, but is what happened to your car very common, or has it happened to you before? Sorry, that has to be awful to be come to. I've only parked on main roads or big parking lots, so I hadn't really thought about it before.
Hey Darwin, I've heard nothing but bad things about gor tex shoes, but what about for the winter months?
That's a hard one... I for one won't use Gortex on anything. However what works for you in the field Works! Hike your own Hike Levi!
Hike On,
Darwin
My first hiking boots were a pair of Gore-tex Asolo's that I used for 4+ years and I never once had a leak, unless of course water was running down into the boots from the top. That's where gaiters would have helped, obviously, haha. But I loved them!
Hey Darwin. How durable is the Marino wool tshirt? We have looked at getting those but I was unsure of the durability.
Also hiking the PCT in 2018 what time frame are you starting the trail? Maybe ill catch you there i would love to meet you
hello im planning the pct in 2019 what kind of permits do you need for the hike and i heard you have to put in an application for the pct any type of maps that would help thank
Love those Kuhls. I'd leave the briefs at home. Go commando and save some weight while increasing 'breathability' and cooling. Sock liners, yes. Crotch liners, no!
I prefer a wide brimmed hat for high sun conditions. Keep that sun off your neck and ears.
What part of the AZT are you planning on being on? You biking again or hiking
Hiking & thinking of going South of Flagstaff. Starting where I got off last October.
Hike On,
Darwin
That's why I like to use the train to get to hiking locations you don't have to worry about your car , sorry I hear this Darwin great vid BTW
Any thoughts on bringing an active insulated layer? Or just hike in the Ghost Whisperer if you have to?
I just hike in my Rain Jacket if it's chilly. Warms me right up!
Hike On,
Darwin
Good point. Hopefully see ya on trail next year mate.
Noticed you switched to OR Helium 2. Do you miss the pockets and pit zips?
I think it's the Helium HD -- which is a Helium with pit zips and pockets. I have one and love mine. Harder to find than the Helium, though.
How do you wash though?
Dude. No offense but the sun is way more intense in the Sierra than in the desert. Got the worst sunburn on my legs there and had none in the desert. Think you should Rethink this.
