I'm beginning to think that fans starting with BIS forget that the series was always the biggest slanderer of Luigi for kicks. Toad NPCS, Enemies, and the universe itself did it all the time. I remember having to inform a friend watching Super Mario Bros Z and Luigi being dragged by the clothing line that it was taken directly from the first few minutes of the first game, and it wasn't out of the ordinary for that series. Can't blame him for his reaction.
The absolute worst slander Luigi has experienced is absolutely in Partners in Time with the star door. A shame nobody played that game so they don't know, but Starlow never went as far to get luigi have a melt down like that door did
The issue, at least for me, came from how Luigi grew. When Luigi thought he was Mario in SS, people actually respected him and his confidence. After dueling Dreamy Luigi in his giant form, Bowser directly called Luigi by name for one of the first times ever. In general, the Luigi hate faded in characters with time. Not Starlow. Starlow got factory reset every game so, despite learning reasons she SHOULD respect Luigi, always went right back to calling him a pansy come the next game.

@@antoinemayrand7348that door was a gaslighting gatekeeper.
@@antoinemayrand7348I had a segment in the video talking about how people would say that the Stargate from Partners in Time made Luigi upset and cry unlike Starlow, but the stargate didn't literally do it for NO reason, it was actually to see if Mario and the babies would stand up for Luigi to test their brotherly bond, he literally called them after that "the best siblings ever" and went on to complement Luigi and described his heart as a "jewel" if I remember correctly, so yeah, he even apologized for making Luigi cry
@@starplane1239that's 100% facts, tho I feel like with each game she started to just "joke" or tease him, but she still didn't have as much faith as him as she does for Mario
it's pretty clear that the intention behind her character was to be a "third wheel" character to the bros but the issue is that she isn't developed enough for it to be convincing. if you give a lot of Starlow's lines to a different character like Daisy, someone who DOES have a pre-established connection to Luigi, a lot of her lines actually come off as cute and quite endearing because we know that they like each other and it's just teasing. with Starlow it doesn't work. To make her likeable she needs to have more time to develop an actual relationship with the brothers (Luigi in particular) so that her insults come off as less scathing and more like light teasing. without that she just comes off more like an annoying co-worker who expects everyone else to do the work for her and even gets to insult them for it too.
Now that you've mentioned it, The fact that she's been in 3 games with the bros yet she still treated Luigi as some kind of a "coward" or "useless" in some situations is...really questionable since she definitely saw and got to know a lot about Luigi's good qualities and how he's been a big help, so she had no character developpment, and no relationship development with the bros either..
@@LilCosmosYT Exactly. I feel this is the real hangup on her as a whole. While I guess it's either "status quo is Miyamoto" that keeps her this way, it really makes her feel like a load that's only there to punch-clock her main gimmicks + shading Luigi about despite having seen him in action A LOT by now.
She's had character development, especially in dream team. She can just never get over reacting to his cowardice or his perceived unreliability with annoyance. She'll get it a little bit by the end of a game only her opinion to revert until Luigi steps up to the next crisis. But that does get old.
I think she literally IS intended to be an annoying coworker. Bowser’s inside story, straight from the beginning, says she’s an intern who got sent there because of an emergency. If anything, her character arc for the rest of the franchise is about developing better qualities by working with the bros
@@maxfecteau i agree with this if we're only talking about Bowser's Inside Story. even though i still only found her tolerable in that game i'd be willing to defend her inclusion there if push came to shove. like even the infamous "ferocious crying" line from her? it's actually an incredibly well-written scene if you really think about it. Starlow doesn't know Luigi all that well, and throughout the game the only side she ever really sees of him is cowardly behaviour and constant attempts to get himself out of trouble. when she finally insults him like that, the story doesn't treat it like another funny joke from her and instead portrays it as a genuinely really hurtful insult. so Mario steps in to defend Luigi by responding to Starlow with reason and she apologises for it. but in Dream Team and Paper Jam her portrayal is the opposite where every joke from her is another insult directed to either Luigi or everyone around her with some exceptions that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. you can only insult characters people like so many times before it really gets on everyone's nerves. why else do you think people hate the door from Partners in Time?
I didn't mind her in Bowser's inside story. She was new, didn't know anything about the Mario bros to know Luigi to be a hero. It's after that game where they kept bringing her back and she continued to slander Luigi which I didn't like.
And was unreasonable hard on Bowser too even when he was doing a team effort. Its definetly a pattern with this character feeling like she's superior to others.
Not really. She can be annoying sometimes but some people are being way too dramatic. I feel like Starlow would be better if Mario or other characters actually called her out for her treatment of Luigi.
I absolutely agree with you, but that's not her only problem y'know, she was a partner in every game ever since Bowser's inside story and people just got tired of her
I like her but I felt that she might've overstayed her welcome in this franchise. Her appearing in Dream Team I can let slide since various other characters from previous titles also showed up in that game (such as Popple and Kylie Koopa) but Starlow taking the companion role again felt extremely redundant when that game had Dreambert also tagging along. In Paper Jam they went out of their way to water down the Mario & Luigi universe of all it's original characters but Starlow was allowed to exist in that game fsr
4:47 I believe that the reason for that, was cuz Paper Mario was already having the "Sticker Star's Curse". Since then if was already really hard to see any companions like in the old PM entries, so this didnt changed at all in this game
@FireCo0kie-0fficial Starlow having good qualities doesn't mean she doesn't have flaws yk, in my opinion she is a good character but her negatives make her quite hard to like her and see her actual good side, kinda like overshadowing her positives, if someone hates her that's their opinion, and if someone loves her that's their opinion, it's subjective and not objective
@FireCo0kie-0fficial tbh I do find it really dumb that they only hate her for dissing Luigi, especially since she only does it a few moments in the games (except paper jam), the rest is just her joking with him and not really attacking his feelings imo, but I still think the other characters in the series doing that to Luigi is Okay since they aren't really harsh with him and it's actually funny, in superstar saga they weren't directly dissing him it was only a joke about how Mario is more recognizable than Luigi, in partners in time he actually gets respected (in the end of the game) and doesn't really get dissed by anyone, Bowser's inside story is where the series started use "everyone hates Luigi" sorta joke and it was overused by using Starlow, I don't really remember other characters specifically "hating Luigi" but they did do some jokes from time to time about how he's not as useful as Mario but not in a harsh way (from what I remember), but either way it's still dumb to forget and ignore her qualities and only hate her for the Luigi jokes...
@@theshadowworld2239 I mean Luigi told her that Mario and SHE fight the boss and that HE should protect the princess instead of her which was pretty dumb but ngl TOSSING HIM INTO THE BOSS WAS QUITE EXTREME (still was pretty funny)
Well, she always act like it should be easy for Mario and Luigi to do it. And critics Luigi if he is afraid of doing so, so why doesn't she try by herself to see how it is instead of criticize him? XD
I mean, *I* certainly don't care for her, she made a bad first impression on me telling Bowser, who had a legitimately valid reason to be at the Blorbs meeting, to get lost and never recovered from that in my eyes. Maybe the hate IS overblown, but honestly, it was a surprise to me to see people surprised that she was hated. Like, have we been playing these games and talking about them on isolated islands or something, did people really not know about the hatedom Starlow had this whole time? And I'm not so much surprised that people like Starlow, every character has their fans, I'm just surprised by people who apparently didn't know that people hated her.
Absolutely agreed, I also really found it harsh when she told Bowser "you're a pain for crying out loud." while he was in pain, and I was surprised when I saw some people in the comments surprised that Starlow is hated by the fandom, it's been literally YEARS...
She outstayed her welcome after Bowser's inside Story and Dream Team. And her slandering Luigi is more than enough to hate her so yeah, that's your answer!
3:03 Well yeah, she's teasing him. It more or less falls in line with how the M&L games in general treat Luigi as a comic relief/butt of the joke, even before she was introduced. I personally don't hold it against her as it was her first outing, so she doesn't know the bros all that well to know she shouldn't get TOO cheeky with Luigi (whether for his or the audience's sake) as not only was she right to some degree but Luigi knows it and doesn't really have it in him to snap back unlike Bowser. I do totally agree though they should've done something else with her or developed her more as the games went on, as it's a bit odd they thought of keeping her with the bros and INSIST on making her dynamic with Luigi specifically a bunch of one-sided jabs (even if they are just meant to be playful) with occasional acts of actual niceness and nothing beyond that. (The way I said that makes her sound like a tsundere lol) Im not even like a Starlow guy, Luigi's one of my favorite characters in the Mario franchise as a whole ironically enough. The hate's justified and seeing her go isn't a problem but people really gotta stop acting she killed his grandma and is the cause of all "Luigi Abuse" when she all she does is talk a lotta smack and is really more of a symptom to a bigger "problem."
There's no denying that Starlow is the only one who treated Luigi like that (pretty much every game treated him like that) and to be honest seeing people hate Starlow for the sole reason of her treatment of Luigi was really exaggerated, in the video I said that she "sometimes" attacked him directly since I know that a lot of moments with her and Luigi was just jokes and teasing, only one or two moments were really mean or rude, and I totally agree with you with everything you said (also appreciate the effort of writing that whole comment)
I liked her in BiS. In Dream Team I was surprised she tagged along for the adventure again but I didn't mind it. But in Paper Jam I was just getting tired of her and she was starting to feel forced.
it's like the games started to become the focus around Starlow as the main character and not Mario and Luigi especially in Paper Jam (also this is unrelated but I used to watch your vids in the past!!)
Personally, it thought shes ok at first, but the primary #1 reason why i do not like her, is the luigi hate, constantly picking on and doubting his helpfulness, like how he helped mario take out the shroobs in partners in time, luigi gets bullied by everyone already enough but that extra insults just really pissed me off.
I just find it annoying they have abandoned other support characters like Toadsworth, Kammy Koopa, E Gadd, and Toadette, but decided to bring back Starlowe.
I will defend her Dream Team appearances, the Paper Jam appearance though makes absolutely no sense. At least in Dream Team she makes sense as you don’t meet up with her until the second area of the game, being the castle. And even then it’s more implied she’s on vacation considering that she doesn’t say she’s representing Shine Sprites at the moment. So she tags along with the bros for a bit, until trouble follows with Peach getting launched away where Starlow sticks around for the rest of the game to help with the calamity. Plus while Dreambert is basically the Dream World Tutorial person (her character is fun but that is definitely what she is though), Starlow doesn’t really give tutorials after you leave the castle, mostly up to other side characters to explain. She is needed but also just a fun spirit to have, but Dreambert definetly steals the attention of being the main character you travel with considering who isn’t able to be talked to in the Dream World (besides a few “are they okay” quips) only able to talk to in the real world, while Dreambert communicates a lot in both worlds, due to her traveling with Mario in the dream world or being the Pillo you sleep on to get to the Dream World, and being much more involved in the plot being the ruler of the Pillo’s and personally involved in the rivalry with Antasma, while Starlow is just kind of there, being our Dreamy Luiginary device controller
That makes sense since most of the time she feels "missing" from the game for me and forget she exists in the game, and ye dreambert definitely steals the attention from her now that I think about it (also dreambert is guy btw just wanted to let you know)
What y’all smoking. This is like when some people tried saying “in hindsight, Sticker Star wasn’t a bad game, just a bad Paper Mario game”, when the game has terrible level design, puzzles, gameplay, etc, with few redeeming qualities (namely stuff like the music and setting design). There’s a reason why Starlow and Kersti are so beloathed.
I don't hate Starlow, but at the same time, i prefer every M+L game moving forward we get a new traveling companion for each one. She can still be around with Peach.
i actually liked starlow she would push luigi but in a good way imo she would push him out of his comfort zone meaning he would face his fears mostly in the boss fights and she is funny imo
I can get behind all this info! You're right, she honestly did have a lot of funny interactions, but definitely overused with no development at all. Dreambert on the other hand, was a great partner: he grew throughout the game, becoming less formal with the bros. and even became more patient with other side characters. And Snoutlet is looking pretty peak to be honest with the Rocket the Raccoon tone he gives off. Like I swear I only read his lines with Rocket's voice (they're so much alike and I'm already laughing even though I've just seen trailers). But yeah, maybe Starlow will be a better partner for Peach, since they get along well. It'll also keep her from getting persnickety with Luigi's fashion sense. Hopefully the new devs actually give her the development she's always deserved. (ALSO THE MUSIC AT THE END OF THE VIDEO IS A BANGERRRRRR!!!!)
I actually had a 30 second part in the video where I talked about dreambert and how he was quite interesting compared to Starlow and stuffwell but deleted since It kinda moved away from the focus on Starlow (basically the video topic), but yeah and I also find it smart and a good idea to make her stay with peach instead of the bros since they seemed to get along well in the games just like you said! I've seen some of snoutlet footage from a someone (they had somehow had the ROM of the game and streamed it on TH-cam 💀) he seems to be a mix of Starlow and dreambert in my opinion and I think he's gonna be a decent partner or even better than starlow, but she's still definitely a good character (THANKS! I've literally been trying to look for the perfect outro music and decided to put Popple & Rookie battle theme and it surprisingly turned out pretty well 😭😭😭)
@@LilCosmosYT Dreambert's the best partner fr. The suitcase is kinda boring (made me laugh at points tho) and the star needs an attitude adjustment (but also made me laugh). Dreambert I feel is the only one with character that everybody can have fun going on an adventure with.
compared to the other partners we had he's definitely my personal favorite, other than him being annoying with the tutorial sections I'm pretty sure he has some flaws but I don't really recall...but still, all 3 of the partners have flaws but they're still good in their own way
You know, the Mario fandom is very luigicentric. Luigi’s fandom is possibly the most toxic in the series, tied with Daisy’s… but at least daisy is very cute and appealing. I see no charm in luigi whatsoever, unpopular opinion? Yeah but still an opinion i have the right to voice. So let’s defend Starlow together 😎
honestly if if Paper Jam never happened no one would hate her nearly as much, but let's be honest, most of us pretend that game never happened anyways.
@@LilCosmosYT It just suddenly changes like a jumpscare to a random scene with creepy sounding popple music, it was so unexpected like something went wrong. A haunted glitch or something. It's spooky!
Yes she is, ESPECIALLY in paper jam, they shouldve called that game „mario and luigi: starlow destroys luigi’s self esteem because the writers couldn’t come up with better jokes”, also while were on topic of paper jam: where the F-CK is paper luigi ?! The game was begging for paper Luigi to be playable but they were like „nah nobody likes the guy”
the fact that they said the reason why paper Luigi wasn't in playable was because using 4 buttons would've made the game hard was really dumb considering PARTNERS IN TIME LITERALLY USES ALL 4 BUTTONS FOR MARIO, LUIGI, AND THE BABIES
Oh, where's paper Luigi you ask? Oh that's funny, why, paper luigi is at the place where you fricking listen to the paper jam ost in game. I hate that this is how he appears, but honestly i'm happy he didn't saw starlow
She is one of my favorite characters in the series and has been since I was little. I had no idea that there was discourse surrounding her character until a few months ago!
I don’t think she awful as a partner npc I think the franchise could use a new partner or have Starlow as an partner for the princess since toadsworth isn’t around anymore I definitely think she owns up to Luigi’s in dream team probably well and compliments him nice in a good way. I just think it was awful the way they treated Luigi in paper jam where Luigi almost felt completely left out at times and made me feel they treated Luigi so badly and that kinda drove me insane.
i feel like nintendo fans just really hate round talking things, navi is a good example. legit if kirby started talking i bet you people would do an 180 and start hating him ferociously
Counterpoint: Meta Knight in Kirby Right Back at Ya. Bandana Waddle Dee whenever he speaks. They speak and are round, yet they’re still widely beloved by their fanbases, meanwhile Starlow is just a jerk with a badly fleshed out dynamic with the Mario Bros. who keeps bitching at Luigi with little provocation. Not helping is the fact that she has appeared in every M&L game since Bowser’s inside story. Starlow is the Sticker Star of M&L characters.
I think a thing that's worth considering with Starlow is that, at least the way I see it. She along with Stuffwell and Dreambert. Is that they're suppose to be the "Explainor" role as I call it. They tag along with Mario and Luigi to help us, the players understand the plot, stuff in game, not talking in funny Italian gibberish, etc. And yes that does include dreaded tutorials. And I think something about Starlow just really worked for them, hence why they kept bringing her back. Plus tbf she does at least help for the most part in the games she shows up in. She isn't just sitting there dunking on Luigi like some fans claim. Though I do agree and hope she may get some character development or some backstory details. I never really thought about that until you brought it up, and if they're insistent on bringing her back, she at least deserves something like that. Who knows maybe that would help make people like her more. Overall great video man! It's nice to see someone finally make something like this on her, with how controversial she can be in the fandom.
yeah! hopefully they fix her a little in the upcoming game and I really do hope people take a look back at her and see if she really deserves being called the "worst" character in the series, also thanks!! :)
In Bowsers she was nice. In dream team, she was a bit annoying but still kinda charming. She at least apologizes to Luigi when she does wrong. In jam she ks totally unbearable. I played like 3 hours of game and on that everything she does is humiliate and bully Luigi non end without any reason. Before Luigi sometimes deserved it, but in Jam she jusz bullies him with no reason at all. And then just manipulates him when she needs him
I don't remember being crazy about Starlow when I first met her, but I dont remember disliking her by the end of the game. Oh and I found her way better of a design than a talking suit case XD
She's a cute character in Brothership now that she isn't there always, also Luigi has been slandered every single game, but we all know everyone respects him, it's just for laughs
What hurt Starlow in Paper Jam is that it was the second game after Miyamoto told Intelligence Systems to not care about Story and to only use characters established in the actual mario Series (AKA Toads) and there was really no one for Starlow to banter with so they doubled down on her hatred for Luigi going from slightly playful mocking to straight up calling Luigi useless and incompetent.
Since Starlow bullys the gigachad that is Luigi, her living is a privilege that needs to be taken away! Lol but fr, it made sense for her to be in BIS because like you said, her and Bowser's interactions with each other when Bowser didn't know who she was was pretty fun, but after that she really overstayed her welcome, it didn't make sense for her to be in the later games since we had other ones like Dreambert. And to be honest, I really don't think that we need partners in Mario and Luigi games, don't get me wrong they are great for teaching you new moves, but I liked what Superstar saga did where you would meet different characters who taught you new moves and tips, heck even Dream team did the same thing too if I remember so there was even less of a reason for her to be in it, but as long as the partners in Brothership have fun personalities and add a bit more charm to them being there like Starlow did in BIS then I would love to see more besides Starlow! But really, her bullying Luigi made me really dislike her at times and for me she was just an annoying character at times too
personafying the tutorials was a big problem and a big complaint by me and pretty much everyone tbh, Dream Team was a really good game but people hated it mostly because of how many tutorials there are for it's gimmicks since it's quite a long game, but thankfully (a little tiny spoiler about brothership's tutorials) they seem to have turned the tutorials in brothership to just some text and images that tell you what to do and you can easily get over them quickly, but I'm not sure if that applies to all of the other tutorials for the other gimmicks so yeah, I feel like a partner shouldn't be in a Mario & Luigi game unless they have some sort of impact on the story and they have an actual fun personality
I always felt like Starlow was one of the best additions to Bowsers Inside Story. I loved her return in Dream Team. However, to me he role in Paper Jam was just too much at that point. You can tell they only brought her back then entirely for branding purposes. Im happy that Brothership is looking like it found a happy middle, keeping her around but as Peachs companion
Alrighty I've only played Inside Story so my experience with Starlow is limited. I am not a fan of her but I wouldn't go as far as 'hate'. She's an interesting companion and I like how she's always snippy with Bowser but all the hate towards Luigi is uncalled for. I know it's common for friends to rag on each other jokingly but Starlow JUST met them, she doesn't get a pass. I hope if she plays a role in brothership she at the very least has a moment of apology towards Luigi.
I didn’t watch the full video but, the answer is no. Sometimes Starlow teasing to Luigi can be a bit harsh but, it’s still just teasing and it’s kinda funny too. I also like her design, voice and role in BIS. And tbh, I’m not even much of a Luigi fan. I’m more of a Bowser and his army guy. Thus, I do enjoy Chippy dialogue with Bowser and Junior. (I haven’t played bowser minion rescue mission yet but, I really want to and see StarLow dialogue to captain Goomba)
That's not teasing. Specially because she started doing it from the very beginning, before forming any actual bonds! In Brazil, we call that "introsa", someone who thinks and acts as if they're part of a group, but barely knows the members. Besides, if it was just teasing, she wouldn't have such a hard time coming up with a compliment to encourage Luigi in Paper Jam when they were at the forest. She literally couldn't think of a SINGLE good thing about Luigi. And she was all alone with him, so there was no one to see her being a funny brat. And all of her interactions with the bros seem to be based on their reputation instead of her experience, so even if she's seen what Luigi can do in battle and that Mario isn't capable of doing everything by himself, she just wont budge! People don't hate her for being mean, people hate her for not growing! EVEN BOWSER ACKNOWLEDGES LUIGI'S STRENGTH IN DREAM TEAM!
@@AndreGustavo-yf9hn oh okay. I mean, if I remember the context right, she just got found after the Mario’s disappeared and couldn’t think of a complement because, she felt pressured. That’s because, she likes to tease Luigi. Understandable. Though, I do still find her interactions funny and helpful still. (I also like her yellow ball with shoes and star design.
No. I like Starlow and I don't want her hated. Also first second of video containing brothership lol sorry cant watch goodbye sorry for ruining retention!
Honestly, if they revert Starlow to her post-Dream Team treatment of people(somewhat less deserving of being dropkicked), i'll probably be fine with her. But if she's still hating on Luigi...idk man, Brothership may be a 50/50 if i buy it or watch a playthrough...
I don't think she's gonna be a problem in brothership tbh, she's along peach and isn't always along Mario & Luigi so maybe she'll make one joke picking on luigi
It’s interesting how many people hate her, I don’t have any problems with her, although I’ll say it’s nice she hopefully won’t be a partner in Brothership and instead Snoutlet can shine more as the only one in that game
It works in Bowser's Inside Story because the game had a slight sense of Karma. There are definitely still better partners and the karma doesn't fully capitalize on it, but I think it's fun to see "good guys" who are just kinda mean get on the receiving end of slapstick. Issue is that it's far more niche given it's explicitly rooted in the idea that spite makes misfortune better, works for some, but it's easier and more tolerable that characters don't push the asshole thing too far.
I personally never had anything against Starlow, but I DO think that she overstayed her welcome after Dream Team. A part of that because Both Starlow and the Stargate apologized when they hurt Luigi’s feelings, even the Stargate’s apology was more genuine. It’s the same reason that I actually don’t mind Kersti from Paper Mario Sticker Star. Yes she DID have her outbursts, but she was grateful whenever Mario saved her and even realized that she kinda him forced him into helping her does feel a little guilty for it If anything it. If anything, the fact she actually took some responsibility for it actually made me feel a little bad about her sacrifice in the final boss despite Mario revived her with the royal stickers. Neither Starlow or Kersti are great characters, but they’re not terrible in my honest opinion.
she made fun of luigi like 3 times and everyone hated her, despite the games themselves doing it too. but i definitely agree she was overused in later entries while barely adding anything new/losing charm. her being a side character or cameo in brothership is more fitting
At first i thought the Starlow hate was a total joke, i never had any problem with her character in the game and i thought it was nice to have a snarky companion character with her own personality, i laughed many times as a kid at scenes when she got angry at Luigi and i really just enjoyed her a ton! I would 100% preffer characters like Starlow who have a more interesting personality and role in the story (Specially BIS) unlike characters like Stuffwell who i really end up with nothing to say about them once i finish the game. Also the ''But she disses luigi!!'' point feels so forced and when literally every single other character in the franchise does the same outside of like Mario and Peach, so why only she gets the hate?? it's so far-fetched. Even taking that aside that, as much as i also love the characters and how immersed im with the franchise. It's a mario game made for kids, Luigi's role in the M&L is to be a comedic character who gets pranked and dissed and Starlow's personality is made to contribute to that goal and make kids laugh like i once did, it's not that serious💀 The whole Starlow hate has to be the most ''toxic'' side i've seen of the mario fanbase which is crazy considering how hard it should be to even be considered that but i guess that's my opinion💀
Only hating Starlow because she makes fun of him or pick on him is really dumb in my opinion since I feel like it's really dumb, I think the reason they hate her specifically and not the other characters for bullying Luigi is because she did it a lot to the point it became a part of her (even tho it was mostly jokes and comedic and I actually liked that in Bowser's inside story, only one or two moments were harsh on Luigi) like for example that Stargate from Partners in Time literally told Luigi that he'll spend a life in loneliness for eternity and nobody cared about that, the Stargate in the end called them the best siblings ever and complimented Luigi a lot in the end since they said it was just to test their brotherly bond (Mario and Luigi), unlike Starlow who does it a lot for no reason (and people took her jokes seriously) I actually had a part in the video talking about that Stargate but deleted it since I kinda talked a lot about the Luigi hate more than I should, but anyways I agree with you, an interesting character with an ACTUAL personality is so much better, in Bowser's inside story she is really good and a part of the game's identity, she just overstayed in the series and people just wanted a new partner, not only Starlow who is still the same and hasn't changed at all and became less and less integrated into the story (and ofc people can have their own opinion as well)
yeah!! luigi is literally supposed to be the butt of the joke of the entire series (a literal adult grown man who is afraid of ghosts, and CUTE ghosts at that…) i see no point in hating starlow (nor in loving luigi that much, especially if that goes at mario’s disadvantage)
I mean I kinda want her to stay BUT not be with the Mario bros. That’s right, I want her to have a full time job in Bowser Castle. Idk, maybe as some kind of secretary to bowser and maybe later have her as some kind of boss that specializes in magic similar to kamek only it really summons minions and buffs them.
@ it’s clear that she’s got a love relationship with the king of koopas himself. Plus, she doesn’t exactly like Luigi all too much so maybe Luigi just eventually snaps at the beginning of one of these games and throws her to bowser castle where she then works as the secretary.
I feel like starlow is only a guide and a luigi hater. Also I don’t understand why she hates Luigi. Idk why but I feel like she likes Luigi but doesn’t show it. Because if you look she always slanders Luigi expect for that one time when Luigi was gonna fight Giant bowser .
I never had a problem with Starlow. She can be a little annoying at times, but I still find her enjoyable and cute. She did overstay her welcome, and she honestly deserves more development. Having people call her out for her behavior to Luigi and starting to warm up to others would be nice. She could've been a more run and endearing character if this Luigi hate is toned down a bit, gets called out for it, gets more character development and have her do more than just a companion would honestly make her a better character if done well. She's cute, quirky, likes to help others and is chit chatty as hell and she doesn't deserve this much hate. She can get a little annoying at times and the Starlow hated Luigi joke does get stale eventually, but I always liked her regardless.
@@charleyrodijk1675 agreed! and hopefully brothership fixes her and she gets a chance to be better, she's a good character, just needs some character development like you said
yes the Luigi slander gets irritating and she had no reason to be in Paper Jam but I still like Starlow. she has an interesting dynamic with Bowser and honestly I found her dialogue with Dreambert cute as well (it was my brainrot at 12 I needed help)
I like Starlow, but the writers have been VERY unkind to her. Between their refusal to develop her as a character or introduce other Star Sprites, on top of the overdone Luigi abuse, she was set up for failure. Bowser’s Inside Story proved that she worked as a character, she just needs more sympathetic writing. I’m hopeful that whatever adventures she’s getting up to with Peach in Brothership aid in putting her on the right track. Also mad respect for being a fellow Dreambert fan. My favorite exchange between him and Starlow was “Forgetbert”. 😆
I agree with everything you said in this video, if I may add something, She's a glorified mouthpiece for the bros, and a not very pleasant one at that. The only other companion that I can compare her to is Kersti, from sticker star, and if you played it, she was a just as unpleasant as her.
@@maskpenn9443 to this day I still find it impressive that they managed to make a partner (kersti) really really bad in every way possible...I can see some common traits of her in Starlow but I personally wouldn't really call her as bad as kersti (I think kersti is probably the only character that everyone agrees that she is really bad)
Starlows just not likable thats thing I've said this in the forums when people ask this quesiton. People say "well Bowser's a bad guy so he deserves the treatment from her". well 1. two wrongs don't make a right. 2. Even when Bowser was being a team player like Starlow asked even said please starlow was being unreasonable mean to him. The difference with Bowser vs Starlow is that Bowser is likeable he's bad guy so of course we expect him to do bad things. There's plenty of likeable bad guys out there as there unlikable good guys/girls starlow just happens to be one of them. Likeability is what determines how a character is treated. Even if hes a bad character people will give him a free pass for bad things he does cause he's likable. Starlow's not neccessarily a bad person/character just unlikable and that's ok because the series wanted her to be that way. Thats why in BIS Bowser accurately describes her as coming off as "superior" and makes him ticked and I'd say that the best way to sum up why Starlow isn't likable. The game is FULLY self-aware of starlow not being likeable lol.
God dayum that's actually a really good conclusion and I actually quite agree with your perspective, it makes a whole lot of sense now that I think about it...
@@LilCosmosYT lol. Basically it all boils down is the reason why people don't like starlow is because they're not suppose to. She's suppose to be similar to your bratty sister or 4th grade Karen teacher. It's pretty clear that's how they wrote her. And the people that actually like like her and are their favorite probably act like she does so they relate to her. lol.
I use to be quite a starlow hater myself for the longest time but after replaying the games and thanks to a certain friend of mine I changed my opinion of her and I like her quite a bit now she's cool in my books even if at times (very few) she can be slightly mean to Luigi which I obviously dont like of course but it aint that bad
I kinda liked starlow in bowser’s inside story more than other games because at least they actually help there both with communicating with bowser and one of the best Bros Attacks in the game I’m honestly glad Starlow is taking a backseat in brothership though we kinda had a little bit to much of them
I’ve never really understood the hate. Yeah, starlow is arrogant. That’s just a character trait. She’s not a noble servant or anything, she’s an intern who got vored by bowser by accident
For me, Starlow just works. She is a kind of a partner that works in any type of scenario. Stufwell was too forgetfull and was litterly just a suitcase. See if dream team took place after brothership. And snoutlet or even connie went to Pi'illo island. They would seem pretty out of place
She’s mostly hated for the Luigi slander. The constant ragging on Luigi in the Mario and Luigi series in general is already hard enough for me to deal with as an avid Luigi fan but Starlow is the most in your face about it. And that’s why I hate her. If not for that we’d be cool.
i do understand the hatred for that reason which i agree with but i still think that it's not the "main" problem of what made her bad, i felt that people hating her only for that only one reason was a bit...dumb. again i DO agree that her slandering Luigi made players hate her (including me, especially in bowser's inside story), in dream team the slandering wasn't much, but she returned to slandering him again A LOT in paper jam, but again like i said, that's not the only problem of what made her quite enraging
I think Starlow's only real problem is her lack of a good role in dream team and being in Paper Jam. The M&L series always kind of slanders Luigi, and even though its not really explicitly stated I do think she does have a better view of Luigi by the end of the game and also loses a little bit of her superiority complex (dont get me wrong, she's still sassy but I think its kinda funny). Also, her relationship dynamic with Bowser is probably one of my favorites in the game, they both hate and don't hate each other which leads to funny conversations. Overall I like her, and Im good if she stays in the series so long as she's given something cool to do like being Peach's partner since their powers seem to compliment each other. Also I wanna see more bowser interactions lol
People back then label helpers like Navi and Fi annoying, but to me I never had that problem with them. Personally I am fond with what they have to say about the enemies name and weakness. Navi at least helps Link by locking and Fi is the sword Link needs to defend himself. If anything Starlow deserves all the hate more than any helper. I know its a running gag that npcs find Luigi forgettable, but having that one helper who just roast him for no apparent reason just boils my blood. Not everyone is perfect such as you Starlow, she can screw off for all I care. Her only purpose was in BIS, she serves no purpose whatsoever on Dream Team and Paper Jam. She will never have the sass like Goombella and Kazooie (the difference is they are sassy to anyone and the enemies plus they kick ass), when Starlow does it, its not even funny, its just straight out mean to Luigi(What did he do to deserve all this). I hope M&L onwards will have new partners on their new adventures (to make some interesting dynamics). KEEP THAT LITTLE PISSBALL AWAY FROM US!!!! (Sorry for ranting about this Character, I hate her so much)
She's really only good in Dream Team and even then, Dreambert was still better. The NPC's making fun of Luigi are kinda allowed to do so, because they're not good or bad guys. They just exist to make the overworlds more alive. Starlow, however, shouldn't be allowed to do that, since she's one of the good guys. I feel like only the villains should be the ones who make fun of the bros, since they are already in the evil morality scale.
Whether she is awful or not, the series NEEDED a new partner
absolutely
She's here again. My god whoisthisgit, have I got bad news for you.
Bowser's Inside Story: Funny unique, and welcome.
Dream Team: Stale but necessary.
Paper Jam: Literally useless and unwanted.
absolutely yes.
and brotherships?

@@corentinrousselet6480 Yes especially compared to stuffwell and dreambert
I like her but I felt that she might've overstayed her welcome in this franchise. Her appearing in Dream Team I can let slide since various other characters from previous titles also showed up in that game (such as Popple and Kylie Koopa) but Starlow taking the companion role again felt extremely redundant when that game had Dreambert also tagging along. In Paper Jam they went out of their way to water down the Mario & Luigi universe of all it's original characters but Starlow was allowed to exist in that game fsr
yess that's exactly what I think!
4:47 I believe that the reason for that, was cuz Paper Mario was already having the "Sticker Star's Curse".
Since then if was already really hard to see any companions like in the old PM entries, so this didnt changed at all in this game
I really like Starlow. Even if she did pick on Luigi, at least she recognized his efforts and encouraged him when he needed it.
that's true that's true
@FireCo0kie-0fficial Because the “actual good points” aren't. They’re asinine.
@FireCo0kie-0fficial God, who says that are you a child?

XD
No excuse. She's actually shown that she's capable of fighting.
Damn. So essentially it was Starlow's fault for the events of Bowser’s Inside Story.
@@dannypalin9583 Basically.
(The way I said that makes her sound like a tsundere lol)
Im not even like a Starlow guy, Luigi's one of my favorite characters in the Mario franchise as a whole ironically enough.
1:13 weirdest thing about him was that he could literally transcend physics and go inside of himself
when I thought of that as a kid my brain just stopped malfunctioning 💀💀💀
I hope she plays a very small cameo in brothership or at least at nice to Luigi
From what I saw it doesn't seem very small but still not very big

I liked her in BiS. In Dream Team I was surprised she tagged along for the adventure again but I didn't mind it. But in Paper Jam I was just getting tired of her and she was starting to feel forced.
it's like the games started to become the focus around Starlow as the main character and not Mario and Luigi especially in Paper Jam (also this is unrelated but I used to watch your vids in the past!!)

Personally, it thought shes ok at first, but the primary #1 reason why i do not like her, is the luigi hate, constantly picking on and doubting his helpfulness, like how he helped mario take out the shroobs in partners in time, luigi gets bullied by everyone already enough but that extra insults just really pissed me off.
she was lowkey not that mean to luigi in BIS shes pretty supportive playing dream team rn i can count on my fingers the number of luigi disses tbh
most of the time it was only jokes, there were only one or two scenes where she was pretty harsh on luigi in the game

@@epicslapbattlesguy7362 i kinda think hating her only because of her picking on Luigi is kinda exaggerated
I just find it annoying they have abandoned other support characters like Toadsworth, Kammy Koopa, E Gadd, and Toadette, but decided to bring back Starlowe.
i mean she was in the best selling game and just became a staple in the series...but they still didn't have to ignore bringing the other characters
That makes sense since most of the time she feels "missing" from the game for me and forget she exists in the game, and ye dreambert definitely steals the attention from her now that I think about it (also dreambert is guy btw just wanted to let you know)
How did Toadsworth not survive to Paper Jam but Starlow got to be the only original character in it?

There’s a reason why Starlow and Kersti are so beloathed.
I don't hate Starlow, but at the same time, i prefer every M+L game moving forward we get a new traveling companion for each one. She can still be around with Peach.
i actually liked starlow she would push luigi but in a good way imo she would push him out of his comfort zone meaning he would face his fears mostly in the boss fights and she is funny imo
Dream Team is where Starlow finally acknowledges Luigi.
if only she was able to see what was happening in his dreams...

You know a Character is worse when bowser agrees
She's a cute character in Brothership now that she isn't there always, also Luigi has been slandered every single game, but we all know everyone respects him, it's just for laughs
What hurt Starlow in Paper Jam is that it was the second game after Miyamoto told Intelligence Systems to not care about Story and to only use characters established in the actual mario Series (AKA Toads) and there was really no one for Starlow to banter with so they doubled down on her hatred for Luigi going from slightly playful mocking to straight up calling Luigi useless and incompetent.
That actually makes quite a lot of sense
@@LilCosmosYT ah huh
@@pancakes8670 it was probably the best decision they made for her in brothership tbh
I'm pretty sure almost every player will be hitting her with a hammer in brothership
@@captainet2457 I do like her design aswell
Yes. Nobody disses Luigi and gets away with it.
No. I like Starlow and I don't want her hated. Also first second of video containing brothership lol sorry cant watch goodbye sorry for ruining retention!
goodbye have a nice day 😭
Honestly, if they revert Starlow to her post-Dream Team treatment of people(somewhat less deserving of being dropkicked), i'll probably be fine with her.
@@LilCosmosYT we can only hope
It’s interesting how many people hate her, I don’t have any problems with her, although I’ll say it’s nice she hopefully won’t be a partner in Brothership and instead Snoutlet can shine more as the only one in that game
She was fine in BIS but Paper Jam absolutely ruined her for me.
NOOOOOOO I WAS TRYING TO AVOID THE BROTHERSHIP TRAILERS I WAS JUMPSCARED BY THE INTRO
SORRY
Good Character Designs may have Bad Personalities.
true words
@@LilCosmosYT Indubitably.
Starlow is severely overhated imo but like omg let her get a break shes been in 4 games (AND NOW FIVE BCS OF MARIO AND LUIGI BROTHERSHIP) 😭😭😭
@@keebyfan37 😭😭
She’s in brotherhood? That’s actually pretty neat for me
ngl same (since she isn't a partner but still a character in the game)
No.
she made fun of luigi like 3 times and everyone hated her, despite the games themselves doing it too. but i definitely agree she was overused in later entries while barely adding anything new/losing charm. her being a side character or cameo in brothership is more fitting
It's a mario game made for kids, Luigi's role in the M&L is to be a comedic character who gets pranked and dissed and Starlow's personality is made to contribute to that goal and make kids laugh like i once did, it's not that serious💀
The whole Starlow hate has to be the most ''toxic'' side i've seen of the mario fanbase which is crazy considering how hard it should be to even be considered that but i guess that's my opinion💀
@@G_come_Gelo Dick
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: she's the biggest advocate for Luigi slander. YEEEEEEEEEES
@@jaykay8426 that would be cool but I don't think they'll ever do that, why would they make Starlow work with the bad guy?
@ it’s clear that she’s got a love relationship with the king of koopas himself. Plus, she doesn’t exactly like Luigi all too much so maybe Luigi just eventually snaps at the beginning of one of these games and throws her to bowser castle where she then works as the secretary.
I feel like starlow is only a guide and a luigi hater. Also I don’t understand why she hates Luigi. Idk why but I feel like she likes Luigi but doesn’t show it. Because if you look she always slanders Luigi expect for that one time when Luigi was gonna fight Giant bowser .
She is the goat... except when there is Luigi hate
Starlow is hated!? I hadn't noticed that until now!
@@charleyrodijk1675 agreed! and hopefully brothership fixes her and she gets a chance to be better, she's a good character, just needs some character development like you said
I only hate Starlow in Paper Jam. She’s amazing in BIS and Dream Team.
issun doesn't deserve the hate
navy doesn't deserve the hate
this little lady doesn't deserve the hate
I wouldnt mind starlow.... if she'd stop slandering luigi
yes the Luigi slander gets irritating and she had no reason to be in Paper Jam but I still like Starlow. she has an interesting dynamic with Bowser and honestly I found her dialogue with Dreambert cute as well (it was my brainrot at 12 I needed help)
@@GatorOne-in7hk That's pretty much the summary!
Whether she does or not, I'd say it's complicated.
agreed
@@LilCosmosYT Yeah. She can be cute at times, but she can also be annoying at times. She's basically the Mario equivalent of Fi.
at least she's not Kersti...
And the people that actually like like her and are their favorite probably act like she does so they relate to her. lol.
Nagh bro, I fu#### love this character
My guess is that starlo will be here as a sort of partner to peach.

yesss :) I've never got the chance to finish dream team and after beating it I really liked him this pillow guy (especially this PICTURE OF HIM)
I use to be quite a starlow hater myself for the longest time but after replaying the games and thanks to a certain friend of mine I changed my opinion of her and I like her quite a bit now she's cool in my books even if at times (very few) she can be slightly mean to Luigi which I obviously dont like of course but it aint that bad
ye she ain't that bad with Luigi most of the time
I kinda liked starlow in bowser’s inside story more than other games because at least they actually help there both with communicating with bowser and one of the best Bros Attacks in the game
I’m honestly glad Starlow is taking a backseat in brothership though we kinda had a little bit to much of them
can't wait for Starlow to be in so many games to the point she says "back in my day"
I love Starlow! She’s so funny and sassy!
I’ve never really understood the hate. Yeah, starlow is arrogant. That’s just a character trait. She’s not a noble servant or anything, she’s an intern who got vored by bowser by accident
All I can say is Luigi needs more respect in the RPG games
Send her to the French Revolution
OUI OUI
For me, Starlow just works. She is a kind of a partner that works in any type of scenario. Stufwell was too forgetfull and was litterly just a suitcase. See if dream team took place after brothership. And snoutlet or even connie went to Pi'illo island. They would seem pretty out of place
yes she does. end of discussion
She’s mostly hated for the Luigi slander. The constant ragging on
Luigi in the Mario and Luigi series in general is already hard enough for me to deal with as an avid Luigi fan but Starlow is the most in your face about it.
Also I wanna see more bowser interactions lol
oh hell yeah Starlow talking with Bowser in brothership would be hella funny
(Sorry for ranting about this Character, I hate her so much)
every helper will be controversial one way or another from what I've seen
She's really only good in Dream Team and even then, Dreambert was still better. The NPC's making fun of Luigi are kinda allowed to do so, because they're not good or bad guys. They just exist to make the overworlds more alive. Starlow, however, shouldn't be allowed to do that, since she's one of the good guys. I feel like only the villains should be the ones who make fun of the bros, since they are already in the evil morality scale.
