This is a Vu-Meter with 10 LEDs, driven by one LM3915, the circuit has been professionally realized on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) by the JLCPCB service. it is also possible to set a graphical view with Dot or Bar mode. In this video I will go to assemble this Vu-Meter step by step. Assembly begins at 3:05 in the video, at 6:02 I have decided to do an electrical test before connecting the circuit to an audio system, and at 6:28 you can see the Vu-Meter test with a song.
After trying the excellent service offered by JLCPCB I recommend it, the quality of the circuits is high, customer service is always available and professional, the time of realization is short and the delivery of PCBs is by express courier.
JLCPCB is a great place to get hight quality custom circuit boards at an extremely low price, you can buy 10 PCB Boards for 2 Dollars.
JLCPCB is the largest PCB prototype enterprise and a High-Tech manufacturer specializing in quick PCB prototype and small batch PCB production. With over 12 years of experience in PCB manufacturing, has more than 400,000 customers, with over 10,000 online orders of PCB a day. Customer service is one of the best in the world, so feel free to upload your Gerber files for file review before completely submitting your order.

Hi! As you suggested, I am making my first vu meter project with a simple one, and I found it convenient to try this yours. As far as to now, I have it almost ready, I made the electric tests (vcc power 12V), but I couln't make the vu meter work.
In relation with the electric tests, I connected the input signal to vcc+, and bar mode worked OK turning all the leds on. And when disconnected the input signal from the vcc+ leds began to turn off sequentially as expected.
But in dot mode results were slightly different from what you showed in your video. When I did the test and connected the 12V supply it turned on not only the highest vu meter led (the last), but the lowest green led too (but with less intensity). And when I disconnected the input signal from the vcc+ the last led (the highest in the vu meter) turned off and the lower immediate led turned on, and so on, going one by one on and off until the first (lowest in vu meter) finally turned off. So, I suspect it is OK in spite of turning on with less bright the highest led at the begining of the dot mode...
I tried to give the audio input signal to the vu meter in two ways (directly from the cell phone, but didn't work (as you explained to another user in the comments). And then tried to amplify the signal from the cell phone with PAM8403 module, but with no results :( No way with the vu meter. Just the electric test...
Finally, I payed much attention to the PCB design, and to the diagram you showed in the video, and I noticed a little difference: in the diagram it doesn't appear a connection between pin 2 of the LM3915 and the collector of the three resistors and the 1uF capacitor (this connection does appear on the PCB!). So, I decided to replicate carefully the logic of the PCB design in a bread board, but I am frustrated due to no results with the vu meter.
May be it the problem is with the input signal. What source can I use? Do you have a video or detail or suggestion in relation to this? Any idea about how I can move forward? I would appreciate!
    Thanks in advance!!!

      Hi Pablo,
I try to answer you step by step, quoting the parts of your comment:
"In relation with the electric tests, I connected the input signal to vcc+, and bar mode worked OK turning all the leds on. And when disconnected the input signal from the vcc+ leds began to turn off sequentially as expected."
► This means that the circuit is working properly.
"But in dot mode results were slightly different from what you showed in your video. When I did the test and connected the 12V supply it turned on not only the highest vu meter led (the last), but the lowest green led too (but with less intensity)"
► I also found this "Defect" but only with some LM3915 .. I still haven't managed to understand why.
"I tried to give the audio input signal to the vu meter in two ways (directly from the cell phone, but didn't work (as you explained to another user in the comments). And then tried to amplify the signal from the cell phone with PAM8403 module, but with no results :( No way with the vu meter. Just the electric test..."
► As an input signal for this vu-meter I use what comes from the amp's amplifier outputs (connecting it in parallel to the speakers).
► To use the phone signal you need to amplify the signal, I recommend using an LM386 as I did in these videos:
      Video 1: th-cam.com/video/Ex3waFdQrHY/w-d-xo.html
      Video 2: th-cam.com/video/KWLLHiExLc8/w-d-xo.html
"Finally, I payed much attention to the PCB design, and to the diagram you showed in the video, and I noticed a little difference: in the diagram it doesn't appear a connection between pin 2 of the LM3915 and the collector of the three resistors and the 1uF capacitor (this connection does appear on the PCB!). So, I decided to replicate carefully the logic of the PCB design in a bread board, but I am frustrated due to no results with the vu meter."
► Diagram and PCB are identical, those extra connections on the PCB that seem different to you, are only the connections to GND of the various components.. on the diagram there are no because they are defined by the ground symbol.
"May be it the problem is with the input signal. What source can I use? Do you have a video or detail or suggestion in relation to this? Any idea about how I can move forward? I would appreciate!"
► In my opinion there is no problem, you just have to connect this vu-meter to an amplified signal, be it a transistor module, with LM386, with TDAXXXX or the amplifier output..
      Keep me informed!
      Regards

Hi stefano, I woule like to add your design to a TEA2025B audio amplifier, do you think that the audio input have to remain like in your design? 2 pins (L+R) from TEA2025 to one input pin for LM34915?

    • @Stefano91ste
      @Stefano91ste  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, if you use a Vu-meter for each channel yes, that's okay (at most add a 10K trimmer between vumeter and amplifier) otherwise the signals must be added if you want to use only one led bar.. in this video I used two 330 ohm resistors to add the two audio channels: th-cam.com/video/KWLLHiExLc8/w-d-xo.html

Hi, i built this and it works great with my mobile output. but one problem i am having is when the audio rectifier (the part with the diode and capacitor) is added, the sensitivity gets very much reduced. i have tried decreasing ref-hi voltage of the ic but it gives weird results. without the rectifier, everything is fine. can i increase sensitivity of the rectifier by reducing the capacitance? is an electrolytic capacitor okay or a ceramic one is needed? please advise.

    • @Stefano91ste

Hi, the capacitor must be electrolytic, but this vu meter must be connected to an amplifier not to a mobile!
