So true, I never liked her constantly on the scrounge and in typical sitcom world ( where the usual rules of human behaviour don't apply ) no one ever told her to p*** off, they would just let her take whatever she wanted.. .So Annoying!! I've never understood why the hell do comedy writers put in these irritable characters, it ruins the enjoyment, and yet it happens time & time again, and there many other sitcoms where you have a certain character or characters that you just can't abide, they add nothing to the comedic flow. I never liked French Fields ( despite the long overdue absence of Sonia), it was never the same show filming abroad, something was definitely lost. I recently watched an old episode of Midsomer Murders and to my delight the brilliant Anton Rodgers was in this particular episode playing an eccentric Lord Of The Manner (if in title only) a really pleasant surprise. Coincidentally Julia McKenzie also appeared in an episode of MM too.
The character of "the problematic neighbor" has been a comedy trope for ages. Perhaps it's for contrast, who knows? But it's a very tricky role, a fine line to maneuver; too mild and the contrast is lost; too much and the character is annoying. Depending on my mood, I sometimes like Sonya, and other times she is annoying.
She definitely destroyed it for me. And how he puts up with living in what seems paddington railway station, people just popping in whenever they feel like it. The maid played one of his secretary's in 'From May to December'.
Anton Rodgers was such a good character actor.

The plot intricacies left me baffled at every hilariously misunderstood turn (dahling). Right up there with Fawlty Towers !
