This is what happens when railroads are run by non-railroaders. Recently executive positions have been going to appointees, most of who have never even ridden a T train.

Part of the problem is those Chinese trains on the Red and Orange Lines. Meant to replace deteriorating, worn out trains, they have often been just as bad as the cars they were supposed to replace. Effectively, the MBTA now has duplicate trainsets to maintain, neither of which is all that reliable, railworthy or efficient. Lesson: do NOT buy trains from Chinese Companies.

I visited Boston in 2010 and rode the subway, and commuter rail. At that time the commuter rail was fine. However, the subway.........the rolling stock seemed grubby, maybe a tad old, and the stations (the few I used) were small, dark, low ceilinged and in desperate need of modernization and enlargement.

A single train on fire and the feds take over DC Metro.
Trains and buses regularly catch on fire in Boston, you can set your watch by the train derailments, and service disruptions are the rule not the exception.
Things couldn't get much worse after they stopped running any rush hour service a few weeks ago. The MBTA is a giant institutional failure but only because the state government has failed to confront the underfunding crisis for decades on end.
In Europe and Asia, public transit is a point of local pride. They demand transportation that doesn't rely on automobiles. But in the US, self-interest is what politicians pander to, and Republicans spin any public spending as wasteful even when it's as necessary as trains, bridges and plumbing.

That's especially bad when you consider that most roads and streets have no consideration for people who can't afford a car, so a lot of poor people have to walk or cycle on the roadside, and die from it. Beyond that, it doesn't change the fact that mass transit is simply safer than cars per vehicle mile. Cars are and will always be more dangerous for one reason: they have more failure points. Each car and each driver is a potential failure point, whereas a single bus or train can take dozens of cars off the road if the system is well designed and well operated. @@dan9809 Hmmm... I don't think your comment makes sense. There's a lot that goes into the curves and banking. The problem with the US is the lack of political will to build HSR or anything public transportation related. But they'll give out tax rebates for cars. And give states money for building more highways. It's a damn shame. This country sucks.
Amtrak has never been funded properly. As people believe cars equals "freedom" while don't knowing what actual freedom looks like. Freedom is choice.

Forget AMTRAK, hire the STM of Montreal or the RATP of Paris - both have well run metros that don't screech when you go around curves!

Why? Boston is the exception and not the rule, especially if you look at how European cities handle public transportation.

Boston also has roads if you're so inclined. Personally I'd rather have a root canal than drive in Boston because it's a hard city to navigate.
When the T is actually working, I find whizzing underneath all of that nonsense much nicer.

I would love to live somewhere that has well functioning public transport. Taking the train is so much better than sitting in traffic for hours. These problems only happen when public transit is knowingly and maliciously underfunded because all the people in power have the automobile industry's money pouring into their wallets.
