Ann Annie uses hermod as well and mentioned a great trick after his performance at Patchwerks: he modulates the clock while recording sequences in with a keyboard controller. When that same sequence is then played back with a steady clock there is an ebb and flow to the sequence that he wouldn’t have been able to achieve otherwise. I thought that was a pretty cool semi-generative technique that hadn’t occurred to me before.
That serendipity when a content creator puts out a video covering gear you’ve just received, yourself. Personally haven’t delved too deep just yet, but I did have loads of fun hooking up the OP-1’s Tombola to my system via the Hermod.
Just got my hermod and learned more in 10-15 minutes of watching this then the past hour of getting lost pushing buttons and clicking around :) Thanks for the excellent Squarp video!
You went from total noob to modular guru in about... what, 3 months or something? haha Love these videos! You're among my favourite creators on this entire platform.
@@Fedor_Tkachev_Music He was already a synth god when he started the modular journey, of course, so the fundamentals were already perfected. But now he's on another level haha
Great video! I’m a Nerdseq user but a lot of the track fx and modulation options you described are available in the Nerdseq too so I got a lot out of watching this. thank you.
Your video came at the exact right time for me. Thank you! One thing I’d wish Hermod had is a general scale setting/effect for all tracks, that can be overruled by a scale effect per track. Now if I want things to follow the same scale I have to set it up per track, which seems unnecessary.
your transition from modular noob to full rack is so me when i just got into it. Glad you got an Arturia case those are pretty fucking awesome. I loved my Hermod so much I got a Pyramid to replace it cuz I wanted a giant Hermod.
Here is a tip that initially seems unintuitive: Put multiple Swing fx in series. Normally, this would not seem sane, but the gold lies in that you can set a different lenght (Grid) for each swing. The Grid parameter means that you can “swing” e.g. a whole bar, so that everything after the center (e.g. beats 3 and 4) is delayed. Play a bit with this, and you can transport yourself around the globe, and possibly to other planets as well. This is soooo much more than just you typical swing percentage. Enjoy! (Oh, and this: Setup multiple Swings in series, and then just play with the fx mutes.)
I like recording the CV inputs e.g. using it to record marbles random output , so i can capture that stream, then manipulate it with fx. have you tried the new 'step advance' mode (OS 1.50) , thats is quite a lot of fun, as not only can you play back manually, but it can make little flurries of events. (e.g advance sequence by 1/4 notes, but place 1/16th notes as like mini sequences0
Rad! Just diving down the eurorack hole thanks to you. Also learning that #Patchwerks is somewhat local to me hasn’t helped either haha. I just got the afterlateraudio Rainer and have a clouds and plaits copy on the way. I was really set on getting the key step pro but after seeing this I’m leaning more towards the Hermod since I already have a key step37
I used to use a pressure points to change the key of the scale effect on all of my tracks with note cv. One touch and all of my voices are in the same different key. Eventually got rid of pressure points because that’s the only thing I was using it for and it’s 20hp haha
My partner has a pressure points and I want to try it with my setup. But the tetrapad might work better because pressure points has some specific power requirements.
Red Means Recording definitely try it. If I would’ve grabbed tetrapad instead of pressure points, I would’ve kept it because of all the stuff it can do.
I've had my eye on the hermod for a while. it looks great with many option but i totally dislike the small screen, could easily have been twice the size and OLED style.

You are very very good at modular but your videos always leave me feeling like ...so what...even if I have the exact same modules you have it will be next to impossible to recreate this since connection information is very sketchy. @@RedMeansRecording Are you planning to release it? I've been hearing it on repeat the last couple of days. Puts me in a lovely state of mind. Thank you for the video.
Hi Jeremy as an ex pyramid owner and noodlebox owner!! I am keen to know how feel about hermod these days do you still use this guy or are you more into the happenstance of the noodlebox? Cheers G
I think the Hermod is probably the best value for money compared to for example the USTA or the Vector. But as far as I can tell from what I see in Vids and Pics the display is just ridiculously small. They probably should sell it together with a magnifier... I am currently looking for a decent sequencer to facilitate a more structured way of music making with the modular system instead of just going absolutley generative, so thanks for this nice Demo!
The display is quite small! One of my pet peaves was that the rhythm on the display wouldn’t be exact to what was being played. Then I found a note that said the display is to be used for reference only. Now I’m using the illuminated sequence on the number pads when it comes to editing notes. It’s a different way of looking at sequences and note editing but it works.
You are really awesome!!! Eurorack + voice = Dope, totally cool. Quick question... I want to add a CV sequencer to my sys, mainly because I don’t want a laptop to control the sequences. Two options: hermod with a keystep or keystep pro???
Your journey through modular is an incredible teaching tool. Thanks for putting this together. I notice you have a pam's new workout as well as the hermod. Is there any redundancy in that setup? I ask because I'm starting my modular build and ordered a pam but the hermod looks so damn useful, especially to be able to record in sequences from a usb controller. With all the clock functionality in the hermod, it seems like pam is overkill, but I'm totally new to this and am sure to be missing something. How do they get used in your setup? What role does each module play?
Pam's and Hermod offer completely different things. Pam's will always be in a system of mine no matter what else is doing stuff. Pam's is a swiss army knife.
Can I use the Squarp to save fully written songs with different scenes or sections? I’m thinking of getting the Squarp instead of the Keystep Pro, but I need to make sure it has this feature first
Hi Jeremy, many thanks for the info and for the jam ! I see you're using TC Helicon Perform VE ? I am trying to find a modular way of adding vocal effects, do you have any opinions on this ? Reading the forums, I have found a suggestion of using MI Warps on voice but there are no examples on TH-cam ..
Hey Jeremy, awesome video! Glad you got the Hermod :] what are you using to process your vocals? And what's the drum module you're using to mute after the Keystep drum gates send?
Model: Cycles (not modular) has this function, which is very cool. But what I wish was a feature was using IF statements in conjunction with chance. But the chance wouldn't be only restricted to whether or not the note triggers. It could be applied to note length, note value, etc. Like say there's a 50% chance applied for step 7 of the pattern. If the chance condition is true, the sequencer will play a D5 note. If false, it will play a B♭4. Does anybody know of a sequencer, modular or not, that can accomplish this?
I wonder if there is a way to connect two Hermods in order to achieve 16 tracks? Maybe midi out from Hermod 1 into the midi thru of, say, Shuttle Control, midi out of SC and midi into Hermod 2? Or am I just wishful thinking?
@@RedMeansRecording Yeah, you can. I read the manual and it shows you how you can daisy two Hermods on the last page, but my routing idea would work as well to unify the midi in my Shuttle. I think I'm gonna do it.
Any particular reason you go: 3.5mm clock and reset out from KSP to Pam then 3.5mm adaptor to DIN from Pam expander to DIN MIDI in on Hermod? Does the Hermod not support clock via USB host? Using clock via USB host, you could then take DIN MIDI Out adaptor from the Hermod to Pam clock and reset in. This might be just my thinking in terms of live setup since I could save one connection from outboard (the KSP) to the case and have it be connected in the case and not connect it before soundcheck (which saves time and takes one source of problems out of the equation). Am I making sense here?
Can it be used purely as a MIDI to CV converter without using the onboard sequencing... basically passing through the note and gate info... say your sequences are on ABLETON instead and you just want the 8 MIDI channels of information to pitch/trigger modular voices?
I have a super old question. When you did your OP-Z chill set you used some sort of mood light. I was curious what it was. Thank you! I love the vids :)
It’s truly a great sequencer, but for some stupid reason I feel like I’m cheating when using it or other modules like it. However, real estate is a premium in a Eurorack and the space it saves is worth it.
For those who don't know, plaits is pronounced to rhyme with "where are you AT". I was saying "plates" until I realized it's the remake of braids and plaits are a type of braids for your hair.
