    How to describe the Solid Teak Deck-House:
    "unspeakably gorgeous," or "staggeringly beautiful," or "perfectly splendid," or "art, not carpentry"...
    So cool the original brass runners got used!

      What kind of "professional paint brush" is it? Please for more informations... thanks!

    • @kennethellison9713
      @kennethellison9713 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@MikeAG333 Yep, I have never used that particular varnish. But I have been a professional painter for over 20 years and have used countless types varnishes, stains, paints, lacquers, and coatings to know how tho properly apply them. And I know that foam brushes and small 1-inch throw-away brushes simply don't carry enough material to adequately cover large areas, they shed bristles and they are awkward to hold for larger jobs. The type and shape of bristle, the shape of the brush (angular, straight, round) and even the shape of the handle are all key to making the job not only look good when finished but to also make the job easier for the worker.
      My remark was simply regarding my observations of the many other builders, refinishers, restorers, etc. that I've seen on YT using improper paint tools. I'm sorry to have triggered you regarding Le Tonkinois varnishes. I'm sure it's a great product.

    • @kennethellison9713
      @kennethellison9713 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@hartwiggrunewaldt5102 I'm not exactly sure what brand he's using here (17:50), but it looks much like a Purdy 3" angle-cut nylon bristle. A professional brush will have large handle like this one, proper bristles for the type of material, trimmed and feathers bristles, and it will be large enough to carry the right amount of material to the work surface.

    • @FiferSkipper
      @FiferSkipper ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree more! I can't stand watching people using rollers and foam brushes on varnish.

    The new campanionway (deck house), as well as the rest of the boat, is an absolute thing of beauty. Having spent many years doing finished carpentry I can say with out question the workmanship is a supreme example of the 'artform'. I'm always pleasantly surprised and amazed there are still craftsmen around capable of achieving this level of workmanship. I know it's ultimately going to be used as a sailboat but given the degree of exquisite craftsmanship I would be scared to death trying to sail her in open waters.

It's like observing the steam coming of the top of a hot cup of tea. My hope is that there is a comfort for you in returning to your "home away from home." And what a cherished experience it will be for all who see it during its life, due to the `beauty of its build.' The hatch cover is just one of the many flaming examples of what I'm talking about. Oh yeah, welcome home! Cheers!

    12:30 - Yes! First from my cabinetmaking days and then from when I built all-composite carbon-epoxy RC model gliders, I've always been amazed by the amount of clamping force the vacuum-bagging process can generate.
    Assuming a moderate partial vacuum of 10 pounds per square inch (easily achievable with a homemade system built from an old recycled fridge motor), veneering or laminating something the size of a dining room table top (say 8' by 4') would be a typical application.
    8' x 4' is 4,608 square inches; once the vacuum is created you'll have 10 pounds of perfectly even pressure on every square inch - including any tricky-to-hold curved egdes - so the entire job would be under more than 46,000 pounds of clamping force.😳
    Not something you can easily replicate with G-clamps, bags of sand, bricks, blocks of lead, or even a few tame elephants. And you don't have to reinforce the workshop floor, either. 🐘👀

    Craftmanship of the highest order, as usual, and great little comedy bits too. I'm still fascinated by all the work on Tally Ho.

    Well done to all the crew. The woodwork looks great. That's another few steps to going sailing; something to keep in mind. SAILING!

    The new companionway hatch is a visitor's first visual testament to the craftsmanship consistent with every repair, refit or redesign being carried out from bow to stern, top of the mast to the bottom of the keel (warts and all - pouring the new lead was quite an adventure)!

    All I can say is that every piece of timber work on Tally Ho is a work of art. I have watched every episode and can't believe how Cinderalla is being dressed for the ball.
