Recently purchased a lovely home on vastly growing development on the outskirts of Sumter (if you know, you know) I'm aware of the crime rate but crime is high everywhere in America not just sumter and from what I see here it's in certain areas as most American towns and cities

I live in SC I own property in Wedgefield SC. 10 miles West of Sumter SC. Ihave a cabin shed on the property i go out to every two weeks. I have no issues with palmetto bugs. Sumter is not the only one with palmetto bugs is all around SC. I was raised in Philly. I know roaches. The city was and may still be infested with roaches and I mean horribly. Here SC the roaches are very few. I live in Summerville SC and I have no problem like any suburban area there are bugs. That just the way it is. They are the and size as roaches in the north east. They are not 4 to 5 times bigger than a regular roach they come in different sizes and species. Some of the roaches fly. Yes there are flying roaches in the north east as well. Now for getting rid of them. It is not that hard. You can hire an exterminator to spray the property, which works, or get you a can of raid and spray inside and out that also works. I know I have done it and I have no roach problem. If I don't spray I still don't have a roach problem. The raid kills them fast actually kills most bugs Maybe see 1 a week if any. Not sure where in sumter she lives that she has that problem. Must be a heavily populated area I guess. She needs to visit Philly then she will appreciate the palmetto bugs in sumter let alone SC. The rest she says is true. Sumter is more or a laid back place. Nice place to retire if you select, like anywhere else, the right neighborhood. I like it out there. They have made improvements to downtown sumter. I just see the glass as half full compared to places I lived.

Sumter is a small town, what do you expect? I’ve traveled several places while in the military … but i choose to come back here an live , near my very small family. Not to bad for the small town it is. An the homeless has no choice to be outside a lot because they open an close the shelters at certain times. Do your research . Where I live I’ve only seen a palmetto bug-roach only once in going on 3 years .. give Sumter a break!🧐

Sumter best suits two kinds of people, military and the civilians who have relatives there who know the score. Don't live in town. It's old, tired and most of the core really should be bulldozed and sold to Tuomey for more parking because it's got too many legacy SMALL old buildings which are cheap and charmless. OTOH life out by Shaw AFB can be comfy and as you get to the edges of the county near Manning it's much better. I haven't had to lock my door since moving where I live (not telling because I like it as it is!) in the 1990s.
If you're young and not from there you're probably military so living either near base in one of the new condo builds or even better, renting between Shaw and Columbia where you have room to have fun rural style is the way to go. Sumter is getting crowded quickly and none of that is good except for developers. Shaw AFB is the economic linchpin of Sumter County but it has a fair number of other employers. I quite like it but it takes years to get in with the locals. I'm a motorcyclist and mechanic so it suits me fine. If you want cosmopolitan then stay in whatever city you live in. South Sumter is to be avoided because while not large it's not safe either.
Most crime is property crime and assaults, not many murders but if you want your property to stay that way, don't live in town and no I don't care how appealing that old home with "potential" looks. Some of the well off live in "pill hill" (so named for medical folk who bought in there) but IMO they are welcome to it.
If you are looking to make money in medicine Sumter is aging and wide open for more services. Just live by the golf course away from town as the commute is short and easy. A pain clinic could make huge money because right now to get a good one you have to drive to Columbia and there are many veterans so if you take Tricare you could pretty much print money. On a doctor's income you could live very well in the Carolinas on a much lower gross income than elsewhere. Property taxes are modest except for new vehicle taxes.
The locals and many transplants really are friendly which is why I retired here. Ask your realtor to find you a rural place some distance out then buy all the acreage you can, something I could not afford in New Jersey and why I escaped. It is in a red state so if you aren't, stay away and everyone you included will be much happier! The US is huge and has room for everyone.
