      Context:
Mushroomhead fans accused Slipknot of ripping off Mushroomhead's image (masks and costumes) since Mushroomhead existed 2 years earlier, this is because Roadrunner supposedly offered Mushroomhead a recording contract because they wanted a theatrical rock band they could cash in based on their image, like a new Kiss or something.
Mushroomhead being a DIY band, turned down the offer since Roadrunner was offering them less than what they were earning by doing and selling their own merchandise by themselves, so Roadrunner opted for Slipknot instead who formed 2 years after Mushroomhead did.
So the resentment comes from there, since Jeffrey Nothing, the former lead singer of Mushroomhead accused Roadrunner of using Mushroomhead's image and visual concept and giving it to Slipknot without their knowledge to promote them and market them in the same way as boybands like Backstreet Boys or NSYNC were being created, promoted and marketed by record labels and music executives, which in the rock and metal world, is considered unauthentic and fake.
Jeffrey Nothing was partially involved in the attacks since he admitted to have done banners for the fans to carry to the concert and retaliate against Slipknot, and according to Corey Taylor, they threw several objects at the band, including a padlock to Paul Gray in the face, so Slipknot acted in consequence, this is early angry Slipknot, so you could expect them to pull their punches.
Also, another ignitor to the feud was that before the concert, members of Slipknot's crew started insulting Jeffrey Nothing's then at the time girlfriend, calling her the B word once they saw her with a Mushroomhead shirt, causing the wrath of both the bands and fans, Corey Taylor assures the attacks were incited by the band themselves.
The feud escalated even more the next years when Slipknot, more specifically Shawn Crahan, started ignoring Mushroomhead's existence in public and interviews, assuming and making the general metal community and the specialized press assume that they were the only existing masked metal band and Mushroomhead was just a myth, all while Mushroomhead tried to approach them amicably before, and because of this, some of Mushroomhead's members resented Slipknot to the point of taking the feud further in public and interviews, specifically drummer Skinny, who called them out in interviews for ignoring Mushroomhead's existance and calling themselves the only masked band, he called Slipknot the Backstreet Boys of metal, as a way of supporting Jeffrey Nothing's claims that they were a product made by the label and not a legitimate act.
Also Jeffrey Nothing, who is a tattoo artist, made himself a tattoo of himself in his butcher look, coming out of Corey Taylor's entrails and ripping him off from the inside, with the phrase "The Truth Comes Out", to which an infuriated Corey Taylor answered threatening to spit on Jeffrey's face during a show in 2008.
To this day, Jeffrey Nothing hasn't moved on from his sentiments towards Slipknot, meanwhile past and present members of Mushroomhead, including Skinny, have show their support and respect for Slipknot, even as far as to have Sid Wilson as a guests in 10.000 Cadillacs, a Mushroomhead side project and doing a show together back in 2012 in which both percussionists accompanied Sid Wilson during his DJ set.
