TOM CLARKSON YOU ARE A LEGEND!!! Thanks for your effort on delivering such well elaborated interviews. On a side note I got the impression you are building up slowly around it...but soon we will have Fernando Alonso here? Muchas gracias.
Absolute brilliant designer/engineer. Barnard ranks up there with Chapman, Murray, Head, Newey, Brawn, Bryne, and Costa. Great interview! The one area that was sorta confusing was Barnard talking about how much Ferrari was a engine F1 team when he arrived in 1987 but Harvey Postlethwaite was specifically selected by Enzo to design/engineer better chassis for Ferrari. Harvey was hired in hired in late 1981, and he and his team produced the successful 126C2 which was a great chassis which used aluminum honeycomb and later carbon fiber for the wings. Ferrari won the WCC in 1982-3 with the 126C2/C2B/C3. By 1987, it was time to try another English designer hence being Barnard, both produced great chassis's for Ferrari
Got to say more people need to listen to this episode. Amazing insights from John, so candid and honest, loved his take on Schumacher, Prost, Alesi etc. Unsung hero of F1, don't think he gets the recognition he deserves compared to the Adrian Newey's of F1.
Really nice interview. Love how he calls them Prosty, Monty... Thanks for giving the reference to the book, these little touches make it a satisfying podcast to listen to.
This episode was just fantastic! Yeah, the sound quality isn't as good as usual but it's totally fine. And don't get me wrong, it's great to listen to today's F1 drivers and their stories. But personally, I prefer the episodes with the people "behind the scenes" like John Barnard, Rob Smedley, Aldo Costa or Gordon Murrey... Those are always super interesting and entertaining^^ Thanks Tom for the great Podcast
Great interview. JB was on the best F! designer of all time. Quite interesting his comments about oversteer and understeer and how the drivers manage that. Some cool guys to interview: Patrese, Boutsen, Fretzen, Patrick Head, Keke Rosberg
This is absolutely amazing interview, so much in-depth information about so many things... just wow. This whole podcast, gotta say, is a goldmine. Keep it up!
Unfortunately Rory hates giving interviews and publicity. Rory is "into" engineering only. A Rory podcast would be the best ever, but unfortunately Rory won't do it. Also Ferrari is very protective about Rory.
Brilliant!! I have enjoyed all the podcasts I listened to but to me this one is the very best so far. Fantastic how John Barnard goes into the details and how Tom Clarkson manages him to open up like this. Thank you.
John Barnards cars`Chapparel`Mcclaren`Ferrari some of the most aesthectcally beutiful F1 Cars ever,a true Maverick of F1 desighn`so enjoyed listenening to him, funny guy too.
Really enjoyed this episode! Loving Beyond The Grid. I've always though F1 is about the people first, and the most successful teams inspired by inspirational people are the winners, notwithstanding the chance and circumstance of racing - Beyond The Grid is the ideal way to peek into the people behind successes and failures. Motor racing is a wonderful sport of people: you can't win without a good car but a good car is only ever the product of driver, team, designer and engineers. Magic.
So true, it takes excellent and complex leadership to build a winning f1 team, the proof is in Williams sad state, I don't see their team principle as being an inspirational figure to anyone, let alone a group of people that are skilled and talented enough to even be properly considered for any spot in an f1 team.
Finally the one l have been waiting for ! brilliant interview Tom ...JB is a true innovator and technical genius. Many many thanks Tom...l look forward to the next podcast. 👏👍🙂
These are great insights. Every time I finish watching this I feel like 1 year older/wiser in F1 racing term. Considering I met this character first in Michael Schumacher's book , on Schumacher to be more precise not by Schumacher, listening to this as well, gives me whole different perspective on number of things.
Really an excellent episode, fun to listen to him. It was quite charming you didn‘t ask him about the 96 Ferrari, that would have been a bit embarassing 😁.
Nigel Mansell really believed in the semi-automatic transmission. He insisted that they stay the course instead of reverting to the standard and he also booked an early flight home after the first race! Think about that. He expected to weather early teething problems before reaping the rewards later.
Ha ha .Typical Mansell, he only ever exerted himself in testing when he wanted to go home earlier . Unfortunately the wrong guy for leading development of the car from a driver perspective
What an innovator! There is still lots of passion in him for F1, I wonder why he is not involved anymore? I don't like Ron, but comparing Ron to Flavio is a joke! Flavio is probably one of the luckiest people alive...
I think it's so funny the number of people that don't respect the paddles and think the clutch and lever are some sort of special talent, right of passage, or cult that you join by choosing a manual over paddles, when the paddles are superior in so many ways.
Just quick question why the question was not asked ton John what's the problem with Ferrari nt having championship till today after 2007.. I m sure he would have accessed it better
Its just ridiculous how Barnard, a man known to create pretty poor cars from an aerodynamic point of view and who used to call aerodynamicist bad names like black magicans, claims he brought Benetton forward aerodynamically. A team whichs aerodynamic team was lead by Prof. Willem Toet, a Professor of aerodynamics and Rory Byrne probably one of the best aerodynamicists ever. Why can't Barnard just tell the truth(that anyone who watched F1 in the 80's and early 90's knows anyway)that he never was really into aerodynamics? He was a great engineer but did not like aero and was not good at aerodynamics. One of many reasons why he never built a good car after 1990, when aero became more important than everything else. Probably because today everyone knows that aero is the most important thing on a F1 car. And because would be damaging for his reputation today if all the old stories about Barnard shouting at the aero guys that aero is less important than everything else etc., comes up again? Really ridiculous and poor that Barnard pretends, no - lies that he would have helped any team with a real aerodynamicist in improving aerodynamics... But thats Barnard. He probably believes in his own lies...and that reminds me of what people in F1 told me when they heard that i talked to John Barnard :" Be carefull with crazy John. Because he is." His Ego was and still is his problem. And probably he needs these aero lies for his ego. As he was so wrong not realising how important aerodynamics became. He did not really understand it untill his final few years in F1. But it was already to late for him really understanding complex aerodynamics. A shame that even today he cannot admit his mistakes and by that he downplays other people for his very ego and reputation. Really a shame. A great engineer like him should not need this...but thats "Crazy John" and it demonstrates why he really was called "Prince of Darkness"...
This is a fantastic episode. The insight about how Schummi, Prost, Alesi and Berger worked was briliant. Loved it.
That Michael Schumacher comment on the V10 was fascinating. My kind of driver. Dancing on the throttle.
He was a month away from turning 74 here, absolutely sharp as a tack, never loses his thread, and the passion still there. Brilliant.
TOM CLARKSON YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!
Thanks for your effort on delivering such well elaborated interviews.
On a side note I got the impression you are building up slowly around it...but soon we will have Fernando Alonso here?

Best podcast yet. Fascinating listening to John.
Barnard and Gordon Murray.....epic

John Barnard seems like a good man. The podcast went away very fast with him telling those amazing stories. Really good.
Not gonna lie. That was my favorite of the series so far.
A real surprise, often the tech guys are boring, great story telling here
Same to me.
He looks like a mix of Checo and Kimi
Ahahahahahahahah xD
And Messi
Checo and Kimi, I am your father"
I love this series! And this interview was one of the best yet! Well done.
Please get Adrian Newey and Rory Byrne on the Podcast.
Adrian Newey would be awesome
Absolutely. Exactly what I've been wanting too. I also wanna hear from Eddie Irvine.
Yeah Eddie!
@@multired6 That guy is nut bag. It'd be entertaining hearing from him.
Yes, yes, and Gordon Murray please!
You can tell how passionate he is. Awesome interview! I think you have pulled the remote podcast off as well.
His laugh is absolutely fabulous. And I loved the technical insight he gave on the driving styles
Got to say more people need to listen to this episode. Amazing insights from John, so candid and honest, loved his take on Schumacher, Prost, Alesi etc.
Unsung hero of F1, don't think he gets the recognition he deserves compared to the Adrian Newey's of F1.
Awesome to hear the legend Barnard. Takes one back to perhaps the best era of F1, the 80s and early 90s.
My god what an amazing chat, there has been so much going on over the years, what an incredible man, what an ambassador for engineering.
What a pleasure this interview was thank you!
Really nice interview.
Love how he calls them Prosty, Monty...
Thanks for giving the reference to the book, these little touches make it a satisfying podcast to listen to.
the way he explained Schumachers style is exactly the way Alex Albon described Verstappen, that blows my mind honestly
one of the best Interviews ever..👏
This episode was just fantastic!

Design guru and good guy. More of this please :)
Great interview. JB was on the best F! designer of all time. Quite interesting his comments about oversteer and understeer and how the drivers manage that.
Some cool guys to interview:
Patrese, Boutsen, Fretzen, Patrick Head, Keke Rosberg
I thought it was Kimi for one second when I looked at the thumbnail
Marc Ozor Imagine having a second podcast with Kimi😂 Totally wouldn’t mind that!
@@praveenas4675 I believe there is one with kimi:-)
Let's get Ron Dennis to talk about his life in F1, Alonso vs Hamilton and his $100M fine. That would be interesting!
5 championships, the MP4-2 is truly one of the most underrated racing cars of all time
Wow! Incredible episode.
What a genius, best Beyond The Grid podcast yet.
Happy Birthday to John Barnard! Now on Rev. 74.0, may he have many more!
This is absolutely amazing interview, so much in-depth information about so many things... just wow. This whole podcast, gotta say, is a goldmine. Keep it up!
A Rory Byrne podcast would be sensational
Unfortunately Rory hates giving interviews and publicity. Rory is "into" engineering only. A Rory podcast would be the best ever, but unfortunately Rory won't do it. Also Ferrari is very protective about Rory.

Deserves more views this one. Fantastic insight. I was captivated.
Teen in 80s growing up watching n reading f1...heard the rumours about senna with benetton now I know it was true..great talk jb...
Wow, this is an experience he shares!!
Top of the greatest F1 car designers of all the times:
1 - Gordon Murray
2 - Harvey Postlethwaite (1944-1999)
3 - John Barnard
4 - Adrian Newey.
You forgot Colin Chapman!
I think Rory Byrne gave Newey a run for his money
@@xueyihon3648 2003 wasn't a good year for both of them if you think about it
Newey is overrated compared to his peers.
I could have listened three more hours and I have read the book. Awesome podcast!
Which book please??
Ahmed Essam The perfect car, The biography of John Barnard from Nick Skeens. Awesome book with a lot more details than the podcast.
John Barnards cars`Chapparel`Mcclaren`Ferrari some of the most aesthectcally beutiful F1 Cars ever,a true Maverick of F1 desighn`so enjoyed listenening to him, funny guy too.

I went for a lovely walk in the countryside listening to this and it was Great!! No issues with the remote interviewing technology so well done!! :)
A very interesting interview.
Thanks!!
Fascinating, insightful and a brilliant POD episode.
This was an amazing interview, thank you!!

Great, but sorry TH-cam, even with a commercial every three minutes, I’m not paying for premium TH-cam.
I like beyond the grid
What a brilliant guy.
First look i thought it was Haikonen
So we know now what Kimi will look like in 20-30 years time
Looking forward Eddie Irvine!
I didn’t know Graham Linehan designed F1 cars aswell
100% get it from the image in the video. A less wonky Graham Linehan 😂.
Finally!
why was not in chronological order of events ?
Hey🏎️❤️🏎️❤️
I thought he looked like Kimi too. Others think he looks like tom cruise...checo...hakkinen .haha
Is the guy from Fiat, Luca Di Montizemolo?
Looks like kimi R
Secretly he is his father...
Thank you for squeezing in a question about Keke Rosberg and Nelson Piquet, Tom. 🙄
