hey!! firstly, congrats! despite the stress that comes with it, the transition into college is such a fun and exciting time. 🥳
I actually started my college journey at a super expensive private school, the university of southern california. it was my dream school and I didn't expect to get in, so when I received my acceptance letter, I felt like I just HAD to go. I mean, it's USC! it's a well-known, prestigious university, and that definitely sucked me in. my other options were mostly lesser-known schools that I wasn't "in love" with, so I ignored the insane price tag and notoriously tough curriculum, and chose USC. I wanted to live the socal lifestyle so badly. I loved my LA life at first, but after a few months, the stress really started to kick in. I was only in 3 classes and I was getting my butt kicked, lol. AND I was starting to get really stressed out about the fact that I would be in over $100K of debt after my 4 years at USC. it was so bad that I was taking stress naps every day, and when I look back on pictures of me in LA, I looked so exhausted at all times. I ended up leaving USC after being there for just one semester to go back home to my local central illinois community college, and then after getting my associates, I transferred to USF.
I feel like the situation I was in 4 years ago is very similar to the one you're experiencing now. you could choose to go to the well-known, prestigious university and have what society sees as the "ideal college experience" by going to crazy parties and living the big-city lifestyle. however, this means you will pay a boatload of $$$, and likely be in classes so tough that you won't really even have time to go out without sacrificing your grades. it's awesome that you realize now that you likely won't even be able to partake in the party scene because your schoolwork is going to be so demanding. I brushed off USC's academic rigor and really paid for it, so you are definitely one step ahead of where I was when I was your situation!
by no means are college decisions a one-size-fits-all type of thing - even though our circumstances seem similar, you may choose umiami and thrive there! however, based on my experiences, I would say USF is the better option. I personally got so much more out of going to USF than I think I ever would've at USC. this is for a couple of reasons:
      1. I actually had spending money at USF, so I could afford to go off campus to do fun things, go out to eat with my friends, etc. I also had the money to buy my own camera equipment (I majored in broadcast production) because I wasn't paying absurd tuition prices, which really helped me become a better videographer than if I had to borrow equipment from the school
      2. my classes at USF were tough enough to be challenging, but not so challenging that I couldn't keep up and have a normal social life. I struggled HARDCORE at USC, and like I mentioned, I was only in 3 freshman-level classes
another big perk that I am experiencing now as a recent graduate is the fact that I am completely debt free. I plan to move to st pete in august instead of going back home to live with my mom, and I likely wouldn't be able to do that if I had a ton of student debt to pay. if you choose to go with USF, I have a feeling that your graduated self will look back and thank you for choosing the cheaper option. yes, USF isn't as fancy or prestigious as umiami, but I had an amazing time at USF and I believe you could too!!
sorry for such a long response, LOL. I really hope that helps though! good luck with your decision process!! and let me know if you have any more questions, i'm always so happy to help 😊
