    I always thought liminal spaces are more of an “in between” state. Like, it doesn’t have to be necessarily creepy or it doesn’t have to be nostalgic either. It just has to feel like a state of being in between two locations, two realities, or if you push it, between two mental states.

      One time I was checking out an abandoned house with my friends. We were in the backyard where they had a huge pool and an outhouse. When I went to open up the door to the outhouse, a hand comes out and grabs it. I yelled "Oh shit!" Then I started yelling at my buddies that we needed to GTFO. It was probably a bum shooting some heroin though.

    0:28 This isn't quite the same, but back in the 17-1800s, British aristocrats built so-called "follies", which where sometimes basically fake ruins. They were built to look like old ruine castles or temples or hermit's caves, etc. And they even hired people to act as hermits there. It's wild, look it up.

    Worst part is all this extra lore and all the infinity of different 'levels' just kinda ruined it, they wanted to turn Backrooms into SCP or something when they should've just stayed as something mysterious and unexplainable. SCP has all this lore and precise information because they're an organization that _researches_ things. Backrooms should've stayed as this sort of myth or legend that isn't entirely knowable.

    • @bb_bubkis7100
      @bb_bubkis7100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      I agree with this, I always felt having a centralized lore for the Backrooms takes away from the idea that these places are not centralized and more unknowable in their relation to one another.

    • @thebravians7354
      @thebravians7354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      should mention that the cannon backrooms is the wiki page, and most would disagree in stating the backrooms lore has anything to do with SCP or the scp wiki itself. Of course there's other versions of the backrooms which go along the idea of there being multiple floors. But the cannon i believe only follows the idea of there being only one floor.

      Only thing I have against the 'levels' thing is that it kinda kills the whole 'documentary' vibe of the whole thing.....because I doubt anyone would survive long enough to escape to write about said levels. And there are A LOT of levels apparently.

      lots of impossible in science til somebody goes and digs it up lol
      Funny one was them spending a century wondering what religious or metaphorical meaning some vase had showing a person flying over the bull. They thought it impossible at the start so knew for a fact the meaning had to be much more significant. Then one day two archaeologist while having lunch near the same area the vase was found saw kids that were still playing the same old game. Like chicken to us but ya grab the horns and flip over the bull. Chad ass leapfrog. That's all it was, such a stereotypical pencil neck geeks locked all their life in a room not even daring to think what a body can do. Having to be shown by some poor kids with nothing but balls and a an animal to play with.

      as its basically just (fairy realms) but hallways. I say just use the concept and make up your own lore. Hell, before I even heard of the backrooms I was writing stories in maze like hells, and seeing others wit shows, movies, and folklore and such with the same basic idea. Hell how many horror movies are there in hospitals or mansions you can't escape from, whose doors unnaturally open up to more rooms and hallways than it should have. There is a reason we see this as theme in so many horror games (as it is a theme in so many nightmares), make it a studio like Bendy and the Ink Machine, or a toy factory like Poppy's Playtime. Just need wide spaces mixed with narrow spaces, mostly emptiness, a sense y7ou could have escaped at the start but after a certain point can't go back, confusing and unnatural space use, and add in some creepy things stalking about.

    The very fear of the Backrooms comes from how inexplicable it is, being suddenly noclipped out of reality into an endless series of rooms found only in a video game, and staying there for who knows how long until you find a way to noclip back.

    The backrooms (with or without over explaining lore) as a concept feels like a modern version of mirror world, shadow world, and especially the fairy realms type stories where you would be walking through the woods and pass over a fairy ring or under a fairy arch without realizing it and suddenly the woods make no sense anymore, buildings that shouldn't be there, strange towns in the distance, paths missing, and weird creatures may be around. With the idea being if you suspect you walked under a fairy arch to retrace your steps and go back under the arch to return to your own world. I did my own lore once with spaces like the backrooms as a sort of *you weren't expected so it feels empty* with it becoming increasingly easy to slip into the mirrored world but unlike the woods or a secret door in the basement, if you go there by accident in a building it is usually just empty...and any windows should be avoided, etc..go back the way you came and hope the doorway is still open to slip back into your own word.

    Many comments says that the backrooms were better before the concept of levels.
    First : Then just take it as it was before, there is countless versions of the backrooms you can just decide for yourself what is "cannon/real".
    Second : It is a fact that the idea of the backrooms would have never be known that much without the concept growing.
    So if you dont like the "New" backrooms just be happy the backrooms are more known now than before, stick with the version you like and just ignore the rest without just hating people who prefer those other versions.

    The thing that people call "liminal space" is basically just the vaporwave aesthetic. The REAL vaporwave aesthetic, not the Arizona Tea/Fiji Water bullshit. It's that feeling of nostalgia with a touch of loss. The subreddit has a completely asinine definition. Honestly, "liminal space" is a bad term for it, but it's what people are using now so w/e.
    I've always loved this aspect of the vaporwave aesthetic. The music is great, but that kind of 80s architecture - Los Angeles mansions, suburban malls, bright white tile and warm woods - always spoke to me the most. There was a GIF I found years ago that someone posted to the vaporwave group I admin on Facebook (that still somehow has 16k+ people and is basically dead, the very essence of vaporwave) that had that same aesthetic. If I remember right, it was a woman with a lit Zippo lighter, on roller skates, spinning. That's it. But that single image was basically my entire childhood encapsulated. That's vaporwave. That's liminal space. That warm comforting nostalgia of a lost time that you can't really get back to.
    I know that teens and 20-somethings seem to really like this sort of thing (which is awesome), but I wonder how they're going to feel when they *actually* hit that moment for themselves. Like, they're basically fans of someone else's nostalgia. I wonder what their own vaporwave aesthetic is going to look like in 10 years.

      Vaporwave is literally just someone making an ironic version of chillwave sorry to burst your bubble...
      Yes you can put your own definition on chillwave and vaporwave but then that defeats the purpose

      Liminal space used to be this cool little internet community that nobody bothered with and now it's everywhere lmao. I think this is sort of our generation's version of nostalgia in a way, but much more sinister and the centerplace for many horror games to take place. Like a warped perception of what we grew up around. It's part of why toys and commercialized lifelike products such as Furbys and animatronics have been placed so strongly in the current horror scape, because it reminds us of a childlike time but turns that into a fear that stems from when we were younger and more vulnerable to scary things like toys coming to life or gaining some kind of sentience at night while we're sleeping. Luckily I never had a furby, but had similar little fears like that growing up as well. I'm not an 80s or 90s kid, but my parents were older so I got exposed to a lot of older media as a result. Maybe it's not the same for everyone, but that's my experience with it.

    You know what's really terrifying? Being inside a park, like an adult park with one small centered play area for kids, with a buncha stuff you can climb and one, lonesome, bench, in the distance... I went onto that play area, I chilled, in the middle of the night. That bench was completely pitch black, except for one of the metal legs it had, which had a slight shiln to it, like the edge of a knife, except there was no sound, barely any traffic at all, it's covid mandates for christ sake we have a curfew and I was breaking it, so no one was around.
    Utter darkness, devoid of sound, in a play area surrounded by gloomy trees with big stumps, their roots traveling everywhere, uprooting the concrete walkway everyone uses daily. And there, in the distance...
    That voidwoken bench, its leg, reflecting the light, with nothing around it.
    I would've made way if I had the courage to, except I have to go past it. How did I get out you ask? Well, that's simple.
    I didn't.
    I'm still here... And I can't leave...

    ...oh god... I'm not gonna escape Liminal Space, am I? Liminal Space everywhere!
    But yeah, some of the images that can be considered "Liminal Space" can also be classified as something called "After Hours", and really, it just depends on the tone of the image: Liminal Space is more creepy and unnerving while After Hours tends to have a happier vibe to it.

    Yo I feel his pain. Ages ago, in an emergency wilderness survival subreddit, I linked a video about simple and effective earth construction techniques that can be done quickly and whose concept is used even in modern construction. It got taken down. Meanwhile, videos about construction techniques that take over a week and require special skills and knowledge were permitted. Only difference is that those videos were from channels with some fresh hype.
    In my experience, most Fandom/Hobby/Social communities eventually end up with at least one or two dummies ruining it for everyone. Just count yourself lucky if doesn't end up becoming a toxic echo chamber or a mod/admin/owner starts committing sex crimes of some kind.
