- A close look at the Absolute Edition of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's noir classic Batman:Year One. Apart from the usual top-of-the-line production extravaganza, this Absolute Edition features the same 4-part story in two very different versions: in its original, newsprint colors; and in a remastered, definitive recoloring.
We look at all the other major specs, from trim size, page extent, binding and the slipcase, to the ribbon bookmarks, and offer tiny bits of commentary and analysis - particularly on Richmond Lewis' colors, naturally - to accompany our close look at this edition.

Loved it, great work on the content, as always but great work on the sound design for this video. Bad audio, is a turn-off but thankfully that's not the case for your videos. One of my favorite parts of Year One doesn't even happen in the comics and it has helped change my outlook on the Batman & Robin relationship. Mazz mentions in 'The Dynamic Duo' page in the extras that superheroes are easy prey for revisionists and that Wertham had seen B&R's relationship as a metaphor for homosexuals but Mazz points out that these books were primarily written for young boys then and Wertham made the mistake of examining these comics with adult sensibility and without humor, something I'm sure many of us are guilty of when we come across these allegedly, suggestive panels.

And yes, the Dynamic Duo is a great little piece whose insight I really appreciate; it's something I think has plagued a lot of children's writers too (Roald Dahl in particular comes to mind) who were criticized by adults using 'adult standards,' when actually they were writing for children and children's standards, sense of justice, loyalty and so on.

The Killing Joke Absolute edition combines its two versions in a single absolute. Maybe because it is extremely low on page count, it makes sense to do that. But I prefer it slightly more than this 2 slim-absolutes route, simply because it feels a bit more wholesome and honest (one absolute edition (the final word as you put it) for everything - Bonus materials, different editions etc.)
Makes complete sense to me why many would prefer that. It's convenient, and a bit more cost effective, directly leading to a better price perhaps. But I just love slim hardcovers so much!
I find thin hardcovers like Tintin adventures or many European/ BD books to be quite wholesome and honest, as you put it. As long as it is complete and full, a slim hardcover, be it a volume of Rick Geary's Treasury of Victorian Murder or four short stories of Blacksad, to be my personal favourite way to read a story!
This is doubly so when they are different versions of the same book. I prefer separate volumes for a facsimile edition and modern redrawing (instead of a 2-in-1), and I wouldn't want a Noir+regular edition Watchmen in one volume, etc.
This is not at all about any logic =) Just my own ideals when it comes to reading; it is part of the whole complete work I am immersing myself in.

The original colour is amazing. It reminds me to Born Again a lot, it has the same great atmosphere

I think the kind of thing you are talking about - a deluxe or reprint edition with the original colours - is just not DC's way of doing things. You can't get the original colours of Watchmen or the Sandman anywhere after the recolouring for the Absolutes came out, and I am guessing that will also be the case for Sage of the Swamp Thing, unfortunately. 😥
@@ftloc yes Im afraid youre right. Luckily for me here in Spain we have good modern books of swamp thing with the original colour.
Could you make a video of Neal Adams Batman and a comparation with the recolouring? Thats the most terrible example of recolouring in my opinion
Can you make a video on right sequence to read batman comics just like you described the Tintin comics.
Ah but Tintin only has 24 books, each a standalone. Batman has literally hundreds of stories, often broken up over longer runs, by different artists, writers and editors. And most importantly, there is no right or wrong sequence. Read good stories, you'll make whatever connections are needed. And they keep changing stuff anyway, so a certain amount of re-adjusting yourself to a new story is part of the fun.
I'd say Batman: Year One is a actually good place to start, even if it was written in 1987 and Batman started in 1936!
Follow it up with the Long Halloween. See if that feels right to you before deciding the next read.

I received enough gift cards on my recent birthday to finally purchase the Absolute edition. I own the awesome 2005 deluxe edition, and the original printed comics. Thanks again

Happy new year! And no, i don't believe the deluxe uses the original colours or the paper reproduction. It does have the script for all of the first chapter though.

Year One was wasted on newsprint - I discovered this when digging out a newsprint REPRINT - the standard Year One also contains the scripts and submissions art.
I think I remember reading somewhere that they didn't want a Prestige format? or I guess it was working as a reboot of sorts for the main series? I'm unclear on the details but there was a specific reason or two why something this 'significant' was part of the regular newsprint series, do you know what I'm referring to or am I just delusional?

As a courtesy to DC, Graphitti Designs is letting the release of the Absolute Edition of Year One run it's course before publishing the Artist's Edition version. David M has all the art in his possession. The podcast was done February 2018. Perhaps enough time has passed that they are now looking into publishing the artist's edition. One can hope.
Wonder how it would look the same different recoloring in born again, it would be a completely different experience
I agree! I wonder if there's as much (or as drastic) a recolouring in the Marvel books - I should ask someone who knows!
