To the Peak & Back - Ojos del Salado

- After attempting to climb Nevado Tres Cruces we acclimatized on San Francisco and on Ojos itself. We spent our rest days at Laguna Verde. The weather forecast forced us to attempt the summit earlier than planned. This video documents our journey to the top of Chile's highest peak.

Well done and thanks for sharing! I got a quote of 2200usd for a 12 day guided trip, including acclimization ascents of 2 other peaks(Francisco). Seems like a solid price. Do you think 6000 meter books will be sufficient? How cold does it get? Thanks again 🙏🏻
Hey! Yeah, 2200USD is nothing unbelievable - what mainly makes it expensive is the rental of 4x4-s 🤷🏻♀️ We're also running this trip in January: www.mountainbound.eu/plomo-ojos
6000m boots are fine. When you start in the morning then until the sun hits you it can easily be -20C.
Looks great did you guys just self guide and use hired transport or did you go with a local company?
So me (Kris) and Phil are mountain guides and on this particular expedition I was an assistant guide for Phil's clients Jarred and Robbie 😊
@@ramblingowls thanks, could you buy maps for the mountains easily? I know some places I have been this can be difficult.
@@edwardsmith3672 ah, not at all, no detailed maps are available unfortunately, at least not locally. You could try to google how to buy topo maps for Chile but I doubt you'll find smth equal to European standards.
There is an OK topo overview map at the hut before Ojos.
We used satellite imagery & GaiaGPS app.
@@ramblingowls thanks
Why didn't she climb to the top? What is the highest she was able to climb to?
Hey! Honestly? She's not that much into peak bagging 😅 She climbed to 6018m on a previous peak.
@@ramblingowls I have total respect for her. I wish my wife would do what she does. She should be in more videos in the future
Is it possible to rent the cars? Do you have to do it in advance?
It is, but because most of the mining companies in Copiapo also use the rental cars (the same type of trucks) for work we had quite a problem to find two good cars (do not rent the Chinese 4x4s!). I'd recommend either prebooking (there are lots of rentals there) or asking local logistics people to arrange for you - for example Ercio from @punatacama / @refugiomaricunga
Are you going to climb K2 & Mount Logan?
Who knows🤷🏻♀️
Really enjoyed your video! How difficult was it to find a good weather window to make a summit attempt? Seems like Aconcagua can be quite challenging. Is this peak is similar? Thanks!
Thanks!
Weather really depends on the season, December/January is the best time usually. Either way you should take a good chunk of time to acclimatize properly and hopefully the weather gods smile on you😛 The summit push of Ojos is more technical than Aconcagua😉
